The Emerging Church movement developed in the mid-1990s among primarily white, urban, middle-class pastors and laity who were disenchanted with America’s conservative Evangelical sub-culture. It is a response to the increasing divide between conservative Evangelicals and concerned critics who strongly oppose what they consider overly slick, corporate, and consumerist versions of faith. A core feature of their response is a challenge to traditional congregational models, often focusing on new church plants and creating networks of related house churches. Drawing on three years of ethnographic fieldwork, James S. Bielo explores the impact of the Emerging Church movement on American Evangelicals. He combines ethnographic analysis with discussions of the movement’s history, discursive contours, defining practices, cultural logics, and contentious interactions with conservative Evangelical critics to rethink the boundaries of “Evangelical” as a category. Ultimately, Bielo makes a novel contribution to our understanding of the important changes at work among American Protestants, and illuminates how Emerging Evangelicals interact with the cultural conditions of modernity, late modernity, and visions of “postmodern” Christianity.

In 1959, a college student, Matt, is contacted by his cousin who was presumed killed during the Korean War. His cousin invites him to spend the winter break at his parents’ remote lodge in northern Minnesota. Matt persuades two friends to join him and together, they drive to the lodge in a blinding blizzard. On arrival they are shocked to find a horror scene at the lodge. Matt’s two friends and the owner of the lodge disappear after a confrontation with Matt’s cousin, but Matt escapes. Matt is subsequently arrested and accused of murdering the occupants of the lodge including his two friends, his aunt and uncle. No evidence is found to convict Matt; however, he remains a person of interest and is restricted by the court to reside in a small town nearby. Years later, the lodge is acquired by a computer programmer and his friend, but on their initial visit to the property, they encounter several strange and frightening incidents that prompt them to investigate the history of the lodge. They find an article that details Matt’s account of the 1959 incident and set out to locate him in the small local town. After they locate Matt and compare notes, they discover that Matt’s cousin disappeared in northern Alaska. They then set out to locate the site of his cousin’s disappearance. After an arduous trip into the Brooks Range Mountains of northern Alaska, they are captured and find themselves in a large subterranean city.

Sayyid Qutb is widely considered the guiding intellectual of radical Islam, with a direct line connecting him to Osama bin Laden. But Qutb has too often been treated maliciously or reductively-"the Philosopher of Islamic Terror," as Paul Berman famously put it in the New York Times Magazine. James Toth offers an even-handed account of Sayyid Qutb and shows him to be a much more complex figure than the many one-dimensional portraits would have us believe. Qutb first gained notice as a novelist, literary critic, and poet but then turned to religious and political criticism aimed at the Egyptian government and Muslims he deemed insufficiently pious. After a two-year sojourn in the U.S., he returned to Egypt even more radicalized and joined the Muslim Brotherhood, eventually taking charge of its propaganda operation. When Brotherhood members were accused of assassinating Egyptian President Gamal Abdel Nasser, the group was outlawed and Qutb imprisoned. He was executed in 1966, becoming the first martyr to the Islamist cause. Using an analytical approach that investigates without passing judgment, Toth traces the life and thought of Qutb, giving attention not only to his well-known Signposts on the Road, but also to his less-studied works like Social Justice in Islam and his 30-volume Qur'anic commentary, In the Shade of the Qur'an. Toth's aim is to give Qutb's ideas a fair hearing, to measure their impact, and to treat him like other intellectuals who inspire revolutions, however unpopular they may be. In offering a more nuanced account of Qutb, one that moves beyond the cartoonish depictions of him as the evil genius lurking behind today's terrorists, Sayyid Qutb deepens our understanding of a central figure of radical Islam and, indeed, our understanding of radical Islam itself.

Doctors suspect that long-term inflammation or infection is involved in up to 20 per cent of cancers, including those of the oesophagus, colon, skin, stomach, liver, bladder, breast and some kinds of lymphoma. C-reactive protein (CRP) is one of the acute phase proteins that increase during systemic inflammation. It's been suggested that testing CRP levels in the blood may be a new way to assess cardiovascular disease risk. A high sensitivity assay for CRP test (hs-CRP) is now widely available. This book presents recent leading-edge research from around the world.
