Dispatched on what was to be an easy assignment of attacking the Privoser Oil Refinery and associated railroad yards at Moravska Ostrava, Czechoslovakia, the 20th Squadron of the 2nd Bombardment Group saw the bloodiest day in their history. Not a single one of the 20th Squadron's B-17 bombers returned from the mission. In this book, the 90 airmen on that mission provide a remarkable personal window into the Allies' Combined Bomber Offensive at its height during World War II. The story of Camp Rucker, Alabama, during the Second World War illustrates the colossal effort of a quiet nation to shake off its peaceful slumber and mobilize for total war. By the spring of 1942, the first freshly mobilized units had entered its gates. In the following three years, Camp Rucker trained thousands of Army soldiers, WACs, and nurses. Glimpses of the past reveal how the company flourished after its December 4, 1906 creation and how it changed and enhanced the lives of residents in all areas of the state. While William Patrick Lay is credited with the founding of the Alabama Power Company, the subsequent leadership of James Mitchell and Thomas Martin brought unprecedented growth and provided a critical catalyst for the state's entry into the "New South." Although slowed by the Great Depression and the demands of World War II, expansion continued in the company's post-war years with new leadership and further construction, including hydropower projects on the Warrior River and the building of massive coal-fired plants. Early photographs illuminate the company's pioneers and leaders; the erection of dams on the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers between 1912 and 1930; the construction of early coal-fired steam plants, including the Gadsden Steam Plant in 1913; and the arduous laying of miles of transmission lines. Physical infrastructure is only part of the story, however; other photographs capture the human face of the company--the workers, their families, and their unyielding efforts to electrify Alabama in the name of progress.
A long-overdue history of America's "forgotten flattop." On November 24, 1943, a Japanese torpedo plunged into the starboard side of the American escort carrier USS Liscome Bay. The torpedo struck the thin-skinned carrier in the worst possible place the bomb storage area. The resulting explosion could be seen 16 miles away, literally ripping the Liscome Bay in half and killing 644 of her crew. In terms of lives lost, it was the costliest carrier sinking in United States naval history. Liscome Bay's loss came on her first combat operation: the American invasion of the Gilbert Islands. Despite her short career, she touched a number of remarkable and famous lives. Doris Miller, the first black American sailor to win the Navy Cross, lost his life, as did Rear Admiral Henry Mullinax, one of the Navy's first "air admirals." John Crommelin was the senior officer to survive the sinking. Later in his career, Crommelin, a decorated naval aviator himself, sparked the famous Revolt of the Admirals, which helped save the role of naval aviation in America's Cold War military. James Noles's account of the Liscome Bay and those who served aboard her is based on interviews with the ship's survivors and an unpublished memoir that the ship's pay officer made available to the author.
