Suddenly, the U.S. record charts, radio, and television were overrun with British rock and pop musicians. Although this British Invasion was the first exposure many Americans had to popular music from the United Kingdom, British pop — and more specifically British rock and roll — had been developing since the middle of the 1950s. Author James Perone here chronicles the development of British rock, from the 1950s imitators of Elvis Presley and other American rockabilly artists, to the new blends of rockabilly, R&B, Motown, and electric blues that defined the British Invasion as we recognize it today. May 1964 saw major gang-style battles break out in British resort communities between the Mods and the Rockers. The typical story of the adolescent years of boy-meets-girl/teen troubles. Though it's a predictable but touching story, the characters come alive through emotional depth. Michael Marino had just moved to a small town in Pennsylvania. Dealing with the recent death of his mother and a hard core Marine Sergeant father, he finds it hard to make new friends. He soon hooks up with a couple of older boys and gets the reputation of a neighborhood trouble maker. Michael befriends a junkie, Rich, who sees Michael's future better than Michael sees it himself. Rich is a particularly powerful character who blurs the good boy/bad boy line. Eric is the well drawn best friend characters who's innocents gives support to Michael. Jane transcends the usual teen heroine with her unconditional love and support for Michael through her good sense. Theatrical producer Andre Charlot brought Parisian revue to Great Britain in 1912 and dominated his field for 25 years. He greatly influenced American musical theater with Charlot's London Revue in New York in 1924. He created the kind of intimate revue the world came to identify as British, and was known for discovering and nurturing some of the greatest personalities in the century's theater, including Beatrice Lillie, Gertrude Lawrence, Jack Buchanan, and Noel Coward. This biography, researched from sources including his personal memoirs, covers Charlot's life and career from his youth in Paris to his time in Edwardian and interwar London, concluding with his final years in Hollywood playing all-purpose Europeans in B-movies and his death in 1956. Two unpublished essays by Andre Charlot are included as appendices: "Beverly Hills, 1937" and "A Quiet Game of Bridge." The work is illustrated with family photographs from all periods of Charlot's life, production photographs from his revues, contemporary charicatures from Tatler Magazine, and production stills of Charlot as an actor from Hollywood films.
