Word and Sacrament. This is the food that sustains us here on our pilgrimage to heaven. The Word of God and the Sacrament of the altar this is our daily bread. What greater gift could we ask for than to hear the Word of God proclaimed and receive our Lord each day at holy Mass? This is the foundation of our faith; here is the paragon of prayer which strengthens us for our work in this world. In this writing the author has sought to allow the Scripture readings for each Mass (and all Masses of the liturgical calendar are covered: all Sundays and weekdays of Ordinary Time, Advent, Christmas, Lent, and Easter seasons, as well as Solemnities and Feasts) speak for themselves. This is evident in his extensive quoting and paraphrasing of the Word, but perhaps more significantly in his taking as his guiding principle the Lords instruction not to consider beforehand what to say when brought to bear witness to Him (see Mk.13:11). After reading the Scriptures for the day three times (before dawn), Mr. Kurt let the Spirit direct him writing without revision, trusting entirely in the Lord. Thus describing spiritual realities in spiritual terms (1Cor.2:13), the message and tone of the writing reflect that of the readings themselves; the work is therefore termed an exposition of the readings of Catholic Mass. A remedy for such “ignorance of Scripture [which] is ignorance of Christ” (St. Jerome) may be found in this inspired work of synopsis and exhortation. Short chapters with succinct titles cover thematic sections of all the books of the Old Testament, providing the reader with a comprehensive overview of the Hebrew Scriptures. Employing a Christian perspective, the author helps us to recognize Jesus as the fulfillment of the Old Testament that we might discern “in God’s works of the Old Covenant prefigurations of what He accomplished in the fullness of time in the Person of His incarnate Son” (CCC 128). Here we have a faith-filled presentation of the sacred text with special emphasis given to the significance of the NAME of the LORD (YHWH), which is at its heart. Mr. Kurt’s book serves well as an aid for those who do not read the Bible or lack familiarity with its contents... and for everyone it is a call to greater reverence for the prophetic nature of God’s Word.

This work began with the taking of notes on insights and observations derived from contemplation of the Bible, my own life, and the death of my sister. The writings were initially oriented toward the composition of a filmscript, whose purpose was to depict, abstractly, scenes common to the lives of all mankind from birth to death. In February of 1984, well over a year into this project, these lyrics began to pour forth from me. Three-quarters of them were finished before the end of the month. During this period of my life, I underwent an intense conversion to purity of soul. I immersed myself in the practice of all the artistic mediums, including painting and sculpture, poetry, music, dance, and drama. Striving to be an artist for Christ, my life became as a cross between graduate student, monk, and convict. This way of living and working continued for seven years and resulted in the creation of the large manuscript, Songs for Children of Light: Ten Albums of Lyrics, Music, Dance, and Drama. In this volume, I present the lyric portion of the project with accompanying illustrations. May the Light of the Spirit be with you as you read the words herein. James Kurt June 23, 1995
