You win for now, but it isn't over." Trouble has followed pregnant artist Kayla Davies to a picturesque Oregon town where she hopes to paint away memories of a brutal attack. Though he and Kayla share a powerful attraction, neither wants anything beyond an earthshaking fling. Too many lies and secrets have come between them—until another vicious attack on Kayla changes everything….
William A. James Sr. has done it again. He delves into the emotional side of why Vinegar Hill, a 20-acre-tract, was deemed an unbearable slum, and had to be destroyed immediately in 1963. Everything wrong with Charlottesville was blamed on the innocent inhabitants of the "Hill." When three notorious hoodlums killed a UVA student, and Gabe Owens informed on them, most of the City Council and the UVA President swung into action. They masterminded a plan to demolish the homes and businesses of all Blacks on the "Hill," for the crimes of one or two people. The above were helped along by the actions of three "racist" police officers who had murdered William Griot, to keep him from divulging the secret that they were actually Blacks. This novel is intriguing, mysterious, spiritual, and down-home soulful all at once. In this novel, James enters the mind of the reader from page one, and does not let him/her go.

The Secret of Crickley Hall is James Herbert’s number one bestseller. It explores the darker, more obtuse territories of evil and the supernatural. With brooding menace and rising tension, he masterfully and relentlessly draws the reader through to the ultimate revelation – one that will stay to chill the mind long after the book has been laid aside. The Caleighs have had a terrible year . . . They need time and space, while they await the news they dread. Gabe has brought his wife, Eve, and daughters, Loren and Cally, down to Devon, to the peaceful seaside village of Hollow Bay. Perhaps here they can try, as a family, to come to terms with what’s happened to them . . . Crickley Hall is an unusually large house on the outskirts of the village at the bottom of Devil's Cleave, a massive tree-lined gorge – the stuff of local legend. It's perfect for them, if a bit gloomy. And Chester, their dog, seems really spooked at being away from home. And old houses do make sounds. And it's constantly cold. And even though they shut the cellar door every night, it’s always open again in morning . . .
Before the dust settles, as many as 100,000 natural gas wells may be drilled into the Marcellus Shale on more than 20,000 well pads in Pennsylvania. Living on seven acres above the shale, Jimmy Guignard tells his story as an English professor grappling with the meaning of place and the power of words as he watches the rural landscape his family calls home be transformed into an industrial sacrifice zone. From the vantage point of an avid and experienced cyclist, Guignard tracks the takeover, chalking up thousands of miles pedaling through Tioga and surrounding counties. Encountering increased truck traffic on the roads, crossing pipeline construction on the trails, and passing a growing number of flaring gas wells, the author’s rides begin to shape his academic work in ways he found surprising and sobering. Juggling his roles as disinterested professor, anxious father and citizen, and reluctant activist, he reveals how the rhetoric of industry, politicians, and locals reshaped his understanding of teaching and his faith in the force of language.
This book is the story of an African American mans strange Love, and passion for anything nautically related. Book I of the Nautical Negro was written 10 years ago during My first stay in the New York State Prison system.. When I took to writing Book one I had never written anything before that time and was learning on the fly. So the stories in book one reflect my limited experience in the craft of writing . Book one does however give a very clear picture of my nautical development and the progression Ive made throughout the years. Book II of The Nautical Negro was written during my last term of incarceration in 2009. Book II is a lot more comprehensive than book I , and the development of the writing of Book II mirrors in a lot of ways my evolution and development in the surf game. As you will read they have both come a long way. Book II also delves pretty deeply into my spiritual development and the path I believe that has been laid for me on this nautical journey Ive undertaken. One message I do hope this book conveys is that no matter where you come from, no matter what your circumstances were coming up, never give up your dreams. You can make it happen in reality. The last and most important impression I hope to leave on the readers is never let anyone talk you out of your dreams , or tell you , you cant do something. My father all ways said theres no such word as cant! And thats how I always lived my life. That message is especially important to get out in the African American community , because all my life I heard people say I wasnt suppose to surf, or swim the way I did because I was black. And to me thats the worst thing you can do to a developing young mind. Young Brothers and Sisters need to be encouraged to expand there minds, and indeed there horizons by letting natural talents blossom. They must be allowed to purse what ever endeavor there young hearts and minds desire. Brian BJ James Author of The Nautical Negro!

What about the kids already there? How do they do when a child with a challenging past joins a family by adoption? When experienced parents decide to adopt an older child or a sibling group, they jump through all kinds of bureaucratic hoops â?? background checks, interviews, group meetings, reading assignments, classes, etc. But most often the typically developing children these adults are already parenting (whether through birth or adoption) are left out of the process, informed that a new kid is coming, and simply expected to â??adjustâ?? to the addition of another sibling. The addition of a child with a history of neglect or trauma cannot be a seamless transition. The expectations of everyone involved â?? parents, new siblings, and, yes, professionals facilitating the adoption â?? must be realistic, taking into account that the new child will need special attention that may take away time and attention from the already resident kids, that family life is likely to be turned topsy turvy until appropriate counseling and support are in place, that relationships will change. Therapist Arleta James is certainly not the first person to recognize this, but she is the first to do something about it. Brothers and Sisters in Adoption offers insights and examples and sturdy, practical, proven tools for helping newly configured families prepare, accept, react, and mobilize to become a new and different family meeting the practical, physical and emotional needs of all its members. These well prepared and supported families are the ones who thrive!
