A detailed description of the specimens recovered from the Glenbrook prehistoric village site in Glengarry County, Ontario attributed to the St. Lawrence Iroquois. The presence of certain Huron ceramics and smoking pipes suggest liaison between the villagers and the Huron on the Benson or Parsons site time levels. This connection supports the conclusion derived from the analysis of the artifacts which places the occupation of the Glenbrook village very late in the prehistoric period.
This a detailed account of excavations on the Beckstead St. Lawrence Iroquoian village site which took place in 1977 as a result of the site being threatened by a road-widening project. After quoting from the earliest references to the site by the settlers and an explanation of the excavation plan, the author describes and discusses the archaeological features.
The Massawomeck are but one of several hinterland Indian groups which having made a brief, frequently violent, appearance during the 17th century, disappear. Eyewitness & contemporary accounts of the Massawomeck, which are confined to the period 1607-1634, are closely associated with the founding of the English Jamestown & Maryland colonies in tidewater Virginia. Unfortunately, references to the Massawomeck are brief & frequently apart from the mainstream of events. Yet a sizable body of antiquarian & scholarly literature regarding the Massawomeck was generated, largely in the 19th century, which often classified them as one or another of the Iroquois tribes. This vol. attempts to expand upon what is known of the Massawomeck in the hope that it will be possible to enhance our understanding of trade between the mid-Atlantic Indians in the Chesapeake Bay latitudes & the Ontario Iroquois in the 16th century & the first three decades of the 17th century.
Part 1 of the final volume of A History of the Native People of Canada treats eastern Canada and the southern Subarctic regions of the Prairies from A.D. 500 to European contact. It examines the association of archaeological sites with the Native peoples recorded in European documents and particularly the agricultural revolution of the Iroquoian people of the Lower Great Lakes and Upper St. Lawrence River. Part 2 was never completed, as the author passed away.
