James Bond's survival of multiple myeloma since 1992 is an amazing story of tenacity, hard work and good fortune. In this book Jim shares his and his caregiver wife's, Kathleen, approaches and experiences and difficulties. This book provides two acronyms Jim developed that summarize their approaches to surviving a deadly, incurable blood cancer. Multiple myeloma's average survival is about 5 years. There is no cure, yet. Jim primarily is treated in Cleveland at University Hospital's Seidman Cancer Center and the Dana Farber Cancer Institute in Boston, with second opinions from Mayo Clinic and Mass. General doctors specializing in multiple myeloma. They continue to share their story, which they have done in over 30 US states, Washing DC at the National Academy of Science, and in Canada, Spain and Japan. They welcome opportunities to help other multiple myeloma patients and caregivers by sharing their experiences. They do not give medical or drug advice in their talks nor in this book. They live in greater Cleveland, Ohio and enjoy their 2 grown boys, their wives, and 3 grandchildren. Searching Jim's name and multiple myeloma provides much of their story and contact information.

Successful industrial heterogeneous catalysts fulfill several key require ments: in addition to high catalytic activity for the desired reaction, with high selectivity where appropriate, they also have an acceptable commercial life and are rugged enough for transportation and charging into plant reactors. Additional requirements include the need to come online smoothly in a short time and reproducible manufacturing procedures that involve convenient processes at acceptable cost. The development of heterogeneous catalysts that meet these (often mutually exclusive) demands is far from straightforward, and in addition much of the actual manufacturing tech nology is kept secret for commercial reasons-thus there is no modern text that deals with the whole of this important subject. Principles of Catalyst Development, which deals comprehensively with the design, development, and manufacture of practical heterogeneous catalysts, is therefore especially valuable in meeting the long-standing needs of both industrialists and academics. As one who has worked extensively on a variety of catalyst development problems in both industry and academia, James T. Richardson is well placed to write an authoritative book covering both the theory and the practice of catalyst development. Much of the material contained in this book had its origin in a series of widely acclaimed lectures, attended mainly by industrial researchers, given over many years in the United States and Europe. In 1975, a symposium was held in Midland, Michigan, co-sponsored by the Dow Chemical Company and the then Midland Macromolecular Institute in honor of Raymond F. Boyer on the occasion of his 65th birthday and retirement from Dow. The topic of that first Boyer symposium dealt with an area of interest to Boyer, namely, polymer transitions and relaxations. One decade later, after ten years of additional fruitful scientific endeavor at MMI, Ray Boyer was again honored with a symposium, this time celebrating his 75th birthday and 10th anniversary at the Michigan Molecular Institute. The topic of the second Boyer symposium in 1985 was somewhat more focused, this time concentrating on the subject of order (or structure) in the amorphous state of polymers and the attendant polymer transitions that are observed. This volume contains the full manuscripts of the contributors to the 17th MMI International Symposium, held in Midland, Michigan on August 18-21, 1985. Eleven one-hour plenary lectures and ten 20-minute contributed papers were presented during the Symposium. An open forum panel discussion was also scheduled; the edited transcript of that session is included at the end of this volume. One of our tasks in organizing this Symposium was to attempt to gather together a number of speakers who would be able to define what, if any, physical structure might be present in anwrplwus polymers and what the nature of this order might be.
