The Regional Snowfall Index, or RSI, is a numerical system developed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) in the United States to help quantify and compare the severity of snowstorms across different regions. The RSI takes into account several factors, including the amount of snowfall, the area affected, and the population density of the affected region. By using this index, meteorologists and emergency management officials can better prepare for and respond to snowstorms. The RSI is calculated on a scale of 1 to 5, with 5 being the most severe. A Category 1 snowstorm is considered a moderate event, affecting a relatively small area with limited population. A Category 5 snowstorm, on the other hand, is a major event affecting a large region with high population density and potentially catastrophic impacts.
