Wonderful people, the father and the woman who helps him find themselves drawn to each other with ever growing yearnings, visceral and deep, as they try deperately to override their feelings and stay focused on finding out where the man's children have been taken. Dr. Philemy studied at Hofstra University for the degree of Doctor of Education in Specialized Programs in Education. Everyone loves a good adventure story. The history of Akron aviation provides all the real-life pathos of any adventure novel. It all began in 1875, when a young farmer named Jack C. Johnston launched himself and his balloon on one of the wildest flights ever recorded. In 1906, John Gammeter, an Akron inventor, built his own airplane and began making regular flights over the city. In Akron, the Goodyear Tire and Rubber Company saw the future of air commerce and would go on to write its own chapter in aviation history on a global scale. The story of Akron aviation is one of incredible triumphs and unspeakable tragedies. It is the story of men and women determined to conquer the air. Akron aviation matured along with the city, and the two intertwined to become a major influence in northern Ohio as well as the country.
The late James Mahoney went overseas in the spring of 1944 as the leader of one of the four bomb squadrons in a B-24 bomb group (the original 492nd) which endured extraordinary losses for 89 days of operation before being disbanded. The enduring mystery of why such an exceptionally well qualified and prepared group suffered so singularly is one of many significant themes he addresses in his 52 vignettes. Mahoney was reassigned to a bomb group with much better luck (the 467th), and finished the war as their Deputy Commander. As both a 'man among men' and a recognized natural leader, he was positioned to note character and ability, and took it as his charge to develop both of these in the course of administering to the technical and demanding business of a combat organization comprising 3,000 souls. Later in life, wanting to make sense of what he experienced and to record the terrific sacrifice of his peers, he distilled and organized his memories. Overcoming his natural reticence to show his hand emotionally, and fearful that grisly accounts might register as sensational horror instead of sobering lesson, he labored carefully to build for his readers a rich context for his 'war stories'. These memoirs take the reader through the methodology and equipment of aviation and strategic bombing in the era before stand-off weaponry, when hundreds of planes at a time, each with ten-man crews, flew in unpressurized planes through flak and fighter filled skies for hours at a time at 40 degrees below zero, to bomb targets in Hitler-occupied Europe. He introduces the reader to his acquaintances and friends, commanders and charges - a range of memorable rascals, unforgettable heroes, and ordinary mortals showing their true mettle and courage under dire circumstances. Jim Mahoney's account of his 13 months in combat is an engaging mix of timeless morals and enduring humor. The big themes are laid out with common sense, while the practical joke, the stroke of genius, or personal quirk are offered as clear windows to the host of characters and their relationships. I never considered I would become an airline pilot. It was always " too expensive "or "took too much time", or I would not be hired "with-out a four college degree". Perhaps because " I wore eye-glasses..." I was content to offer Flight Instruction in my community, and did quite well teaching new low time private pilot students, and Advanced certificate pilots. I have been employed by six airlines, and the only reason I was hired at each one was because the airline needed pilots to operate the airline! I began researching the commercial pilot status and numbers, and realized there truly is a pilot shortage world wide. In my book I speak about the training and preparation that go into obtaining a pilot license. I will take the reader on an actual Airline Transport Pilot check-flight, describing the sensations and maneuvers required for the Captain candidate to master. We will fly a simulator during our training, and I will relate a humorous story that helped to break up the monotony of performing the same flight profile over, and over again. I will explain the various aircraft systems as they pertain to flight, so perhaps a non-pilot airline passenger may feel more informed of how an aircraft operates. I will also address the aircraft performance factors that may actually aid the passenger in selecting routes and times, to ease their occasional travel delays. Lastly, I will relate a few "super-natural " instances that by my only explanation the Christian Lord was watching over my flight. I have truly been blessed in my life by becoming a commercial airline pilot!
