In the area of (OR/MS), particularly in simulation modeling, working contrived textbook problems does not prepare one well for modeling the kinds of problems one finds in the real world. This book presents three kinds of real world simulation problems from the author's broad experience: (1) problems that the author has solved as an industrial consultant or advisor, (2) problems he has had his students study for local businesses, and (3) non-queuing examples. These problems represent a very broad spectrum of the kinds of problems that simulation modeling can address. Since most simulation modeling software is somewhat problem-independent, the conceptual and modeling experience gained by simulating the problems in this book using any simulation software should prepare one well for simulating problems in other areas not found here. A helpful Instructors Manual is available for faculty.
This memoir is a domestic follow-up to my book Travels and Tribulations: A Memoir, which is a collection of short stories based on my adventures and observations from extensive foreign travel. This book is a collection of short stories about domestic adventures and observations in the process of growing up in the Midwest. Some people think my growing up has yet to happen. These stories are true, some with a few minor embellishments to improve the flow. Some names have been changed to protect the guilty. They are in chronological order but are not tied to a theme nor do they cover year-to-year happenings. They are memorable events that I think a reader might find interesting or humorous. These are the kinds of events that make life what it is.
This book is not a travel guide to countries to visit, inns to stay at or bistros to dine in - thousands of books and articles do that. Rather it presents a wide variety of real stories based on interesting social, cultural and personal encounters the author experienced in his visits to 78 countries as a tourist, professor or consultant. Stories range from educational to humorous to political to earthy to feats of derring-do. From Cuba to Berlin, the Middle East to Europe, and Zambia to Alaska, the author shares with readers his passion for travel, discovery, humor and adventure. "Travels and Tribulations: A Memoir" is a book through which seasoned travelers can identify and non-travelers can live vicariously.
