The first in a series devoted to the legal career of the Rt Excellent Norman Manley, QC, MM. This phase of his life spanned some thirty-three years and terminated when Manley became chief minister of Jamaica in 1955. During that time he won a legendary position for himself at the Jamaican Bar appearing in numerous civil and criminal cases, both at first instance, and in the appellate court. Written in narrative style from a court room perspective, First Time Up deals primarily with twenty-four of Manley's early cases from 1922 to 1925. Based on court reports, Manley's legal papers, diaries and letters, the material is revealing historically, legally and sociologically. Manley's cross-examinations were hardly ever without excitement and those of expert witnesses an intellectual treat. Witnesses offer a mass of detail about life in Jamaica in the 1920s and the verdicts dispel the assumption that Manley never lost a murder trial. The reader meets a host of Jamaican personalities, all in their early, formative years, as jurors, clients or hostile witnesses pitting their wits against Manley in the box.
A Message from Jackie A. Strange Former Deputy Postmaster General United States Postal Service Never before in our history has there been a greater need for individuals to embrace the revitalization and enforcement of ethics. During the last decade, we have seen great leaders fall, institutions fail, and nations falter because of unethical practices. Now is the time for all people to step back, look within, and evaluate their ethical behavior. Since the beginning of time, ethics has continued to be the moral fiber that makes man do what is right. It is the axis of successful enterprise within our society, and it is on this premise that we succeed or fail. This concept has never been challenged, nor has it changed. As man’s knowledge increases and behaviors change, ethics remains the core of this ideology. Individuals and organizations gain empowerment through ethical practices, and through these practices trust is built. Because trust opens communications and stimulates motivation, people work at their highest potential and expectation, and the organization profits. You act and people around you react. Therefore, you must constantly ensure that you are doing the right things that protect individuals and organizations. Does every decision you make individually or organizationally reflect this attitude? Do you have the moral conviction to stand alone, if necessary? In the face of adversity, are you willing to fight for those principles in which you believe? Are you willing to forego personal gain rather than compromise your integrity? Every day you are setting examples and making decisions that individuals and/or organizations follow. Will they rise or fall because of you?A Message from Jackie A. Is life really so complicated? Ask happy and successful people this question and you’re likely to hear that, in its essence, life is really quite simple. In these pages, Newt Gingrich and his daughter Jackie Gingrich Cushman–with the help of prominent people they know and admire, such as Bill Clinton, Rush Limbaugh, Mary Matalin, and David Petraeus–show how, by following just five principles, you can live life to its fullest: • Dream Big Like Walt Disney, who shared the magic kingdom of his imagination with millions, or like Jackie’s sister, Kathy, who didn’t let a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis stop her from completing a walking marathon, see where your dreams can take you. • Work Hard As Jackie points out in her recollections of her dad’s early political career, working hard can be a surprising source of energy, and adopting an attitude of cheerful persistence will help you reach your goal. • Learn Every Day The key is to re- member that learning is a reciprocal process. You can’t be passive; you must be engaged. Come along on a visit to the acclaimed Ron Clark Academy in Atlanta to see how this principle works in action. • Enjoy Life And what’s the best way to do that? From the wisdom of the ancient philosophers to information from the latest scientific studies, the answer is the same: Be grateful for all your blessings and do something every day to show compassion and generosity to others. • Be True to Yourself It sounds easy, but it’s the hardest principle to live by. Discover what people from William Shakespeare to Henrik Ibsen to John P. Abizaid have had to say about this touchstone for an honest life. With these inspiring and memorable words of wisdom, Newt and Jackie have given us a book to treasure for a lifetime.
In this multi-disciplinary collection we ask the question, 'What did, and do, Quakers think about good and evil?' There are no simple or straightforwardly uniform answers to this, but in this collection, we draw together contributions that for the first time look at historical and contemporary Quakerdom's approach to the ethical and theological problem of evil and good. Within Quakerism can be found Liberal, Conservative, and Evangelical forms. This book uncovers the complex development of metaethical thought by a religious group that has evolved with an unusual degree of diversity. In doing so, it also points beyond the boundaries of the Religious Society of Friends to engage with the spectrum of thinking in the wider religious world.
Written by Jackie Beere, The Complete Learner's Toolkit: Metacognition and mindset - equipping the modern learner with the thinking, social and self-regulation skills to succeed at school and in life will empower teachers to transform their pupils' learning. Jackie Beere knows that schools have a much more important job to do than simply to prepare children for exams. In this book she hands busy teachers the tools they need to weave personal development into the curriculum in powerful and exciting ways. The Complete Learner's Toolkit focuses on the most important skills identified by the World Economic Forum - including critical thinking, emotional intelligence and judgement and decision making - and presents 36 lessons that can either be used as stand-alone sessions or be incorporated into a topic or subject context. Furthermore, they can be employed in whole-class lessons or when working with individuals/small groups who need extra support to become more independent, confident learners. Jackie has devised each lesson to develop the habits of reflection and metacognition in all learners, setting them up with the skills they will need in order to thrive and the emotional intelligence that will help them pursue a happy future. To make the most of the material in this book and create the best outcomes for students, Jackie suggests teachers also treat these lessons as personal CPD. Doing so can help embed in teachers' day-to-day practice the skills and mindsets which this book promotes, and so model them for their students. Teachers can also consider how best to adapt the lessons in this book and how to incorporate the World Economic Forum essential skills within their subject specialisms. Suitable for use with learners aged 7 to 16. The lesson plans in this book are available as editable PDFs sold under an annual licence. For more details contact books@crownhouse.co.uk. Parts of this book were previously published in The Learner's Toolkit, ISBN 978-184590070-0.
Advertised in a 1909 sales brochure as The Rising Suburb of the East, Essex, Maryland, has seen its fate and fortune rise and fall and rise again. The town enjoyed its early reputation as a haven for city dwellers with picnic groves, hunting and fishing clubs, dance halls, and waterfront amusement parks. The boom continued with new jobs and prosperity until the 1950s, when a fire destroyed much of the towns main street. Economic decay set in as a result of the loss of industry and an influx of low-income housing. Several attempts at redevelopment and legislation failed, resulting in the residents distrust of government intervention. Finally a county-backed Renaissance project was established in 2002, bringing Essex a new epithet: The Hidden Gem of Baltimore County.

Jesus the Shaman is comprehensive, non-conformist & paradigm shattering. This unique, gripping, revolutionary thoroughly researched book astounds the reader as it gives numerous examples of prophets transformative spiritual psychic experiences, each of which gave birth to and contributed to the birth and development of world religions. These shamans, mediums, (channels), sages, oracles, mystics and prophets are not only shown to span all ages and the globe but are shown to have founded world religions. Entirely turning the tables on religious orthodoxy and traditional Newtonian physics (but not quantum physics)this innovative, highly controvercial, meticulous research methodically draws on primary sources revealing the esteemed spiritual teachers and prophets such as Moses, Jesus, Mohammad had mediumistic gifts. The author has inimitably established beyond question that supernatural communications laid the foundation stones of the world's religions. This book unifies the origins of religions under a single paranormal concept and thereby does much to dispel the causes of histories and todays religious strife.Emanuel Swedenborg, the medium to Europe's royalty & governments taught that thought patterns during physical life determine the appropriate after death landscapes of animals and people irrespective of their religious affiliations.
“When Matisse dies,” Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, “Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is.” As a pioneer of modernism and one of the greatest figurative artists of the twentieth century, Marc Chagall achieved fame and fortune, and over the course of a long career created some of the best-known and most-loved paintings of our time. Yet behind this triumph lay struggle, heartbreak, bitterness, frustration, lost love, exile—and above all the miracle of survival. Born into near poverty in Russia in 1887, the son of a Jewish herring merchant, Chagall fled the repressive “potato-colored” tsarist empire in 1911 for Paris. There he worked alongside Modigliani and Léger in the tumbledown tenement called La Ruche, where “one either died or came out famous.” But turmoil lay ahead—war and revolution; a period as an improbable artistic commissar in the young Soviet Union; a difficult existence in Weimar Germany, occupied France, and eventually the United States. Throughout, as Jackie Wullschlager makes plain in this groundbreaking biography, he never ceased giving form on canvas to his dreams, longings, and memories. His subject, more often than not, was the shtetl life of his childhood, the wooden huts and synagogues, the goatherds, rabbis, and violinists—the whole lost world of Eastern European Jewry. Wullschlager brilliantly describes this world and evokes the characters who peopled it: Chagall’s passionate, energetic mother, Feiga-Ita; his eccentric fellow painter and teacher Bakst; his clever, intense first wife, Bella; their glamorous daughter, Ida; his tough-minded final companion and wife, Vava; and the colorful, tragic array of artist, actor, and writer friends who perished under the Stalinist regime. Wullschlager explores in detail Chagall’s complex relationship with Russia and makes clear the Russian dimension he brought to Western modernism. She shows how, as André Breton put it, “under his sole impulse, metaphor made its triumphal entry into modern painting,” and helped shape the new surrealist movement. As art critic of the Financial Times, she provides a breadth of knowledge on Chagall’s work, and at the same time as an experienced biographer she brings Chagall the man fully to life—ambitious, charming, suspicious, funny, contradictory, dependent, but above all obsessively determined to produce art of singular beauty and emotional depth. Drawing upon hitherto unseen archival material, including numerous letters from the family collection in Paris, and illustrated with nearly two hundred paintings, drawings, and photographs, Chagall is a landmark biography to rank with Hilary Spurling’s Matisse and John Richardson’s Picasso.
Lucas Delgado Guerrero’s skin is too brown and his accent too foreign for him to feel truly at home in England. Returning to Mexico, which he scarcely remembers, however, is hardly a choice. So he remains in London, publishing an illegal newspaper devoted to reformist and revolutionary causes. One of his most popular writers is the intriguing and mysterious Polly Dicax, who delivers sharp, witty screeds by messenger every week. At twenty-five, Lady Honora Pearce is too busy writing seditious treatises to pay much attention to men. Especially when marrying would mean giving up the very rights she argues for in her fierce diatribes. She is, however, intrigued by the editorials written by one of her publishers. Here, at least, is a man with worthy ideas and ideals. Not that she ever expects to meet him, since both their identities must remain secret. But everything changes when circumstances force her to deliver her weekly column herself and, on the heels of her arrival at the printer’s shop, the police raid the premises. To protect the shopkeeper and themselves, Honora and Lucas must hide together in a small chamber. They shouldn’t have to kiss, but somehow, they do. And when Honora finds she can’t stay away, Lucas discovers he can’t refuse her, even if he can never be more than her bit of rough.

Today, Southwest is the safest airline in the world and ranks number one in the industry for service, on-time performance, and lowest employee turnover rate; and Fortune magazine has twice ranked Southwest one of the ten best companies to work for in America. How do they do it? With unlimited access to the people and inside documents of Southwest Airlines, authors Kevin and Jackie Freiberg share the secrets behind the greatest success story in commercial aviation. Read it and discover how to transfer the Southwest inspiration to your own business and personal life.

All That Hollywood Allows explores the representation of gender in popular Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s, the last decade in which film enjoyed a pivotal cultural position. Both a work of feminist film criticism and theory and an analysis of popular culture, this provocative book examines from a cultural studies perspective the top-grossing film melodramas of that decade, including A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, East of Eden, Imitation of Life, and Picnic. Stereotypically viewed as a complacent and idyllic time, the 1950s were actually a period of dislocation and great social change as Americans struggled to regain their equilibrium in the wake of World War II. Jackie Byars argues that mass-media texts of the period, especially films, provide evidence of society's consuming preoccupation with the domestic sphere -- the nuclear family and its values. The melodramas included in her study appeared in theaters just as women were leaving their homes for the workplace. Some films challenged and some reinforced previously sacrosanct gender roles. Byars shows how Hollywood melodramas participated in, interpreted, and extended societal debates concerning family structure, sexual divisions of labor, and gender roles. Byars's readings of these films assess a variety of critical methodologies and approaches to textual analysis, some central to feminist film studies and some that previously have been bypassed by scholars in the field. She specifically questions the validity of readings grounded solely on the premises of psychoanalysis, arguing that the male norm inherent in the psychoanalytic viewpoint may well prevent us from hearing, let alone understanding, the female voices that make their way into the most patriarchal of films. Byars thus critiques earlier approaches to the study of women's films and offers fresh readings, emphasizing from several important perspectives the suppressed female voice.

In the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Jackie MacDonald burst onto the Canadian sport scene with an immense amount of publicity. The tall blond teacher, often compared to Marilyn Monroe, who put the shot, pumped iron and drove a Harley Davidson motorcycle, caught the eye of photographers even before she surprised the track and field community by winning a silver medal in the shot put only one year after she had started the event. When Canadian officials withdrew her from the discus throw at the last minute on suspicion of professionalism, the press erupted in condemnation of the actions of the team managers. She was exonerated a couple of days later, but missed the chance of winning a second medal. She competed in four more international Games, including the 1956 Olympics. A memoir told in four parts, Ladies Don’t Do That! offers insights into the origins of MacDonald’s passion for sports, her competition years in track and field, from the local to the international level and personal endeavours outside of sports including teaching and travelling. Perseverance, commitment, passion and genuine curiosity are central themes to this memoir. No matter what the author devotes herself to, studying linguistics, learning languages, teaching English to refugees as a volunteer, or seeking new experiences, she shows how dedication can yield a rewarding and interesting life. MacDonald exposes the sexism in women’s sport during the 40s and 50s, and the progress that has been made since then. She shows readers that women can do whatever they set their minds to.

An expanded chapter on nutrition covers the foundations of a healthy diet and reflects the most up-to-date USDA guidelines. Part II examines health-related fitness concepts: cardiorespiratory endurance, muscular strength, muscular endurance, power, flexibility, and body composition. The text supplies tips for addressing each fitness component within a program. Part III presents strategies for integrating health-related fitness education throughout the curriculum, employing best teaching practices, and being inclusive in the gym, on the field, and in the classroom. In part IV, readers study assessment and learn assessment strategies for effective teaching and health-related programming. They discover how to collect and use assessment results and how to assess fitness concept knowledge. Physical Best helps teachers impart the skills and knowledge that students need to become physically literate—the first step to leading healthier, less stressful, and more productive lives. It details best practices, provides current content, and shows how to integrate health-related fitness education into an existing curriculum. It helps students meet standards and grade-level outcomes. It can help spark student interest in lifelong physical activity. And it will help teachers be the best physical educators they can be as they shape the future health of the nation.
The studies of philosophy and history of education are under siege. These studies do not attract large grant funds and, to many, do not seem useful, even while much of educational research is dismissed as inconsequential or self-evident and the crisis in American education deepens. Philosophy and history of education have therefore been pushed to the margin--or beyond--in colleges and schools of education, commensurate with the "decline of the humanities" in higher education generally. Philosophy and History of Education examines the complex relationship between these studies, and the value of these related studies for improving educational knowledge, policy, and practice. From diverse perspectives, the philosophers and historians in this volume explore how bringing these disciplines together yields insights about unacknowledged or occult aspects of education problems that neither could achieve on their own.
This landmark book is concerned with the civil power of the news. This power can be seen in the ways the news engages with public sentiment through a focus on three invariant civil concerns: identity, legitimacy and risk. The book analyses how news stories engage with these concerns to make civil and anti-civil judgements, which influence public sentiment and determine the boundaries we place and maintain around the society we live in. Through historical and contemporary examples of this boundary shaping and maintenance, The Civil Power of the News presents a bold and original account of the architecture of news, the influence it has on our conceptions of civility, and, ultimately, the power it wields.
Mauritius in the late 1980’s, unemployment is at its peak and a young girl gets the amazing opportunity to travel leaving behind her bleak job in a textile factory. A whole Mauritian crew of one hundred and fifty is recruited to form the hotel staff of a brand new cruise ship, the Astor which flies the Mauritian flag and is due for a three month maiden voyage from the port of Southampton in England to Genoa in Italy around the South America Coast to Peru and the Caribbean islands.
