The first in a series devoted to the legal career of the Rt Excellent Norman Manley, QC, MM. This phase of his life spanned some thirty-three years and terminated when Manley became chief minister of Jamaica in 1955. During that time he won a legendary position for himself at the Jamaican Bar appearing in numerous civil and criminal cases, both at first instance, and in the appellate court. Written in narrative style from a court room perspective, First Time Up deals primarily with twenty-four of Manley's early cases from 1922 to 1925. Based on court reports, Manley's legal papers, diaries and letters, the material is revealing historically, legally and sociologically. Manley's cross-examinations were hardly ever without excitement and those of expert witnesses an intellectual treat. Witnesses offer a mass of detail about life in Jamaica in the 1920s and the verdicts dispel the assumption that Manley never lost a murder trial. The reader meets a host of Jamaican personalities, all in their early, formative years, as jurors, clients or hostile witnesses pitting their wits against Manley in the box.

Advertised in a 1909 sales brochure as The Rising Suburb of the East, Essex, Maryland, has seen its fate and fortune rise and fall and rise again. The town enjoyed its early reputation as a haven for city dwellers with picnic groves, hunting and fishing clubs, dance halls, and waterfront amusement parks. The boom continued with new jobs and prosperity until the 1950s, when a fire destroyed much of the towns main street. Economic decay set in as a result of the loss of industry and an influx of low-income housing. Several attempts at redevelopment and legislation failed, resulting in the residents distrust of government intervention. Finally a county-backed Renaissance project was established in 2002, bringing Essex a new epithet: The Hidden Gem of Baltimore County.

All That Hollywood Allows explores the representation of gender in popular Hollywood melodramas of the 1950s, the last decade in which film enjoyed a pivotal cultural position. Both a work of feminist film criticism and theory and an analysis of popular culture, this provocative book examines from a cultural studies perspective the top-grossing film melodramas of that decade, including A Streetcar Named Desire, From Here to Eternity, East of Eden, Imitation of Life, and Picnic. Stereotypically viewed as a complacent and idyllic time, the 1950s were actually a period of dislocation and great social change as Americans struggled to regain their equilibrium in the wake of World War II. Jackie Byars argues that mass-media texts of the period, especially films, provide evidence of society's consuming preoccupation with the domestic sphere -- the nuclear family and its values. The melodramas included in her study appeared in theaters just as women were leaving their homes for the workplace. Some films challenged and some reinforced previously sacrosanct gender roles. Byars shows how Hollywood melodramas participated in, interpreted, and extended societal debates concerning family structure, sexual divisions of labor, and gender roles. In the 1954 British Empire and Commonwealth Games, Jackie MacDonald burst onto the Canadian sport scene with an immense amount of publicity. The tall blond teacher, often compared to Marilyn Monroe, who put the shot, pumped iron and drove a Harley Davidson motorcycle, caught the eye of photographers even before she surprised the track and field community by winning a silver medal in the shot put only one year after she had started the event. When Canadian officials withdrew her from the discus throw at the last minute on suspicion of professionalism, the press erupted in condemnation of the actions of the team managers. She was exonerated a couple of days later, but missed the chance of winning a second medal. She competed in four more international Games, including the 1956 Olympics. A memoir told in four parts, Ladies Don’t Do That! offers insights into the origins of MacDonald’s passion for sports, her competition years in track and field, from the local to the international level and personal endeavours outside of sports including teaching and travelling. Perseverance, commitment, passion and genuine curiosity are central themes to this memoir. No matter what the author devotes herself to, studying linguistics, learning languages, teaching English to refugees as a volunteer, or seeking new experiences, she shows how dedication can yield a rewarding and interesting life. MacDonald exposes the sexism in women’s sport during the 40s and 50s, and the progress that has been made since then. She shows readers that women can do whatever they set their minds to.

The cabin stewardesses Mela, Bianca, Nicoleta and other members of the crew tour this great world stunned by the beauty of Norwegian Glaciers and fjords, the greatness of the Amazon River and awed at Jerusalem and the holy land. Souvenirs of unpalatable pizza in Portugal, encounter with rude Spanish horse carriage drivers in Malaga, meeting with a Togolese in Hamburg, a Pakistanis in Montreal are evoked. They befriend Turkish students in Ankara, eat delicious baby octopus salads in the Balearic Islands and dive in cold seas of the Mediterranean and warm lagoons of the Indian Ocean. In French speaking countries they delight in using their familiar Creole with people of Haiti and Jamaica and enjoy the different French accents of Montreal and Quebec in Canada, Casablanca in Morocco, and Dakar in Senegal. They dance in the nightclubs of the world, moving to South American music in Salvador de Bahia and carnival music in Rio de Janeiro, Whitney Houston’s 1987 tube ‘I want to dance with somebody’ in Montreal and Mediterranean rhythms in Greece.
