The hills east of Scranton's downtown are home to one of the most eclectic and historic neighborhoods in America. Scranton's aptly named Hill Section developed over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, from what was originally rugged terrain and dense forest to a socially diverse enclave. The area's close proximity to Scranton's commercial center and unparalleled views of the Lackawanna Valley attracted many of Scranton's wealthiest and most prominent citizens, including the city's namesake Scranton family, to build palatial mansions in a myriad of architectural styles on its many hills. Middle-class citizens soon followed suit, building smaller but equally splendid homes alongside their elite neighbors. To serve the Hill Section's growing population, civic leaders organized religious and community institutions, and local merchants developed commercial enterprises. Ultimately, the Hill Section became home to many well-known educational and medical centers, beautiful parks, and cultural establishments. In the 21st century, the Hill Section is still a thriving community that continues to preserve its heritage. Scranton's Hill Section tells the story of a distinctive neighborhood full of diverse people whose legacies are the true embodiment of American history.

Absence of his father and learning the new ways of city life were challenges to everyone. After a period of moving from place to place, things began to happen. John graduated as a school teacher, Gabriel started an apprenticeship with the Trinidad Guardian Newspaper and Hezekiah was doing alright as a house painter. The best thing that happen to the Nathaniel family was they bought their new house. Gabriel completed his apprenticeship and decided to branch out on his own leaving his family and headed for London, England.

During this period, he had a spiritual encounter with the Lord. He received Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior, and his life direction changed. He tells how he continued his education as he pastored churches in Texas and Florida. He tells of the crisis when his wife of 20 years left the family and filed for divorce. He talks about the pain of rejection for him and his children, and the challenges of raising children in a one parent home. Nine years later, the Lord brought a wonderful, godly woman into his life. They have ministered together for over thirty years and plan to continue as God leads. The author takes us on a pictorial journey that includes educational trips to the Holy Land and mission trips to South Africa. As he closes the portal, he reminds us that we are all “Sailing Toward The Son.” Our final destination, The New Jerusalem, will be ours if we place our faith in our ship’s “Captain.”

For Jews Deuteronomy contains the Decalogue and the Shema -- “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one” (6:4) -- supplemented by a code of primal legislation. Deuteronomy is much cited in the New Testament and has come to occupy an important place in the life and doctrine of the Christian church. It lifts up important wisdom themes such as humane treatment and benevolence to the poor and needy and is rich in theology, calling repeatedly on Israel to reject other gods and worship the Lord alone as holy. Besides drawing on language, archaeology, and comparative Near Eastern material, Lundbom’s commentary employs rhetorical criticism in explicating the biblical text. Lundbom also cites later Jewish interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy and makes numerous New Testament connections. An appendix contains all citations of Deuteronomy in the New Testament.

Where do the origins of the rabbinic movement lie, and how might evidence from the early rabbinic literature be made to reveal those origins? In order to shed light on the early social formation of the rabbinic guild of masters, Lightstone brings the theoretical and methodological insights of socio-rhetorical analysis to examine Mishnah, the first document authored by the early rabbinic movement and its principal object of study for several centuries. He argues that the enshrinement of Mishnah served to model, via its pervasive rhetoric, the principal authoritative guild expertise that qualified and marked one as a member of the rabbinic guild. Furthermore, he establishes the social and historical venue in late second- and early third-century Galilee. The author concludes that the social formation of the early rabbinic guild coalesced around the institution of the Jewish Patriarchy, for which the early rabbis served as bureaucratic-scribal retainers. He further suggests that the development of both the Patriarchy in the Land of Israel and the social formation of the rabbinic guild may have been spurred by the imposition of Roman-style urbanization in the region over the course of the latter half of the second and beginning of the third century. Lightstone’s approach is informed by the insights and methods of several cognate disciplines, encompassing literary analysis, sociology and anthropology, and history (including, in the last chapter, the history of material culture). The book will be of interest to advanced students in the history of Judaism, rabbinic literature, biblical studies, early Christianity, and the history of religion and culture in the late Roman Near East.
