The hills east of Scranton's downtown are home to one of the most eclectic and historic neighborhoods in America. Scranton's aptly named Hill Section developed over the course of the 19th and 20th centuries, from what was originally rugged terrain and dense forest to a socially diverse enclave. The area's close proximity to Scranton's commercial center and unparalleled views of the Lackawanna Valley attracted many of Scranton's wealthiest and most prominent citizens, including the city's namesake Scranton family, to build palatial mansions in a myriad of architectural styles on its many hills. Middle-class citizens soon followed suit, building smaller but equally splendid homes alongside their elite neighbors. To serve the Hill Section's growing population, civic leaders organized religious and community institutions, and local merchants developed commercial enterprises. Ultimately, the Hill Section became home to many well-known educational and medical centers, beautiful parks, and cultural establishments. In the 21st century, the Hill Section is still a thriving community that continues to preserve its heritage. Scranton's Hill Section tells the story of a distinctive neighborhood full of diverse people whose legacies are the true embodiment of American history.

The author takes us back through the portals to the past, to glimpse the pioneer spirit of his grandparents who settled in Oklahoma Territory in 1893. He tells of the German/Irish influence on his family and the cultural changes over the years. He interprets his experience from a conservative perspective and encourages us to follow the Constitution. He tells of the war years in the 40’s in Oklahoma, and his teen experience in the late 50’s in Florida. He talks about his family, football, and marriage, his children and his vocation. We learn about his love for adventure, free-diving, and spearfishing in Florida and the Bahamas. In the midst of material success, he recognized there was something missing in his life. During this period, he had a spiritual encounter with the Lord. He received Jesus Christ, as Lord and Savior, and his life direction changed. He tells how he continued his education as he pastored churches in Texas and Florida. He tells of the crisis when his wife of 20 years left the family and filed for divorce. He talks about the pain of rejection for him and his children, and the challenges of raising children in a one parent home. Nine years later, the Lord brought a wonderful, godly woman into his life. They have ministered together for over thirty years and plan to continue as God leads. The author takes us on a pictorial journey that includes educational trips to the Holy Land and mission trips to South Africa. Mushikiwabo is a Rwandan working as a translator in Washington when she learns that most of her family back home has been killed in a conspiracy meticulously planned by the state. First comes shock, then aftershock, three months of it, during which her worst fears are confirmed: The same state apparatus has duped millions of Rwandans into butchering nearly a million of their neighbors. Years earlier, her brother Lando wrote her a letter she never got until now. Urged on by it, she rummages into their farm childhood, and into family corners alternately dark, loving, and humorous. She searches for stray mementos of the lost, then for their roots. What she finds is that and more---hints, roots, of the 1994 crime that killed her family. Her narrative takes the reader on a journey from the days the world and Rwanda discovered each other back to colonial period when pseudoscientific ideas about race put the nation on a highway bound for the 1994 genocide. Seven years of full-time collaboration by two writers---and the faith of family and friends---went into this emotionally charged work. Rwanda Means the Universe is at once a celebration of the lives of the lost and homage to their past, but it's no comfortable tribute. It's an expression of dogged hope in the face of modern evil.

Land and Economy in Ancient Palestine is a study of the economic crises throughout the Second Temple Period. It establishes that the single factor of the economy which united all aspects of life in ancient society was land. Through study of a wide variety of sources, including the New Testament and classical authors, Jack Pastor looks at who owned land, and how they came to possess it. He examines the various ramifications of landownership in ancient society to ascertain its effect on livelihoods, government policies and revenues. A special emphasis is placed on debt and famine as social and economic problems with ties to the landholding structure.
This milestone commentary by Jack Lundbom is intended for any and all readers who want to better know and understand the key Pentateuchal book of Deuteronomy, which has had a huge influence on both Judaism and Christianity over the centuries. For Jews Deuteronomy contains the Decalogue and the Shema -- “Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God is one” (6:4) -- supplemented by a code of primal legislation. Deuteronomy is much cited in the New Testament and has come to occupy an important place in the life and doctrine of the Christian church. It lifts up important wisdom themes such as humane treatment and benevolence to the poor and needy and is rich in theology, calling repeatedly on Israel to reject other gods and worship the Lord alone as holy. Besides drawing on language, archaeology, and comparative Near Eastern material, Lundbom’s commentary employs rhetorical criticism in explicating the biblical text. Lundbom also cites later Jewish interpretation of the book of Deuteronomy and makes numerous New Testament connections. An appendix contains all citations of Deuteronomy in the New Testament.

Where do the origins of the rabbinic movement lie, and how might evidence from the early rabbinic literature be made to reveal those origins? In order to shed light on the early social formation of the rabbinic guild of masters, Lightstone brings the theoretical and methodological insights of socio-rhetorical analysis to examine Mishnah, the first document authored by the early rabbinic movement and its principal object of study for several centuries. He argues that the enshrinement of Mishnah served to model, via its pervasive rhetoric, the principal authoritative guild expertise that qualified and marked one as a member of the rabbinic guild. Furthermore, he establishes the social and historical venue in late second- and early third-century Galilee. The author concludes that the social formation of the early rabbinic guild coalesced around the institution of the Jewish Patriarchy, for which the early rabbis served as bureaucratic-scribal retainers. He further suggests that the development of both the Patriarchy in the Land of Israel and the social formation of the rabbinic guild may have been spurred by the imposition of Roman-style urbanization in the region over the course of the latter half of the second and beginning of the third century. Lightstone’s approach is informed by the insights and methods of several cognate disciplines, encompassing literary analysis, sociology and anthropology, and history (including, in the last chapter, the history of material culture). The book will be of interest to advanced students in the history of Judaism, rabbinic literature, biblical studies, early Christianity, and the history of religion and culture in the late Roman Near East.
Jack Paar, America’s midnight maverick, has become the most talked-about, most controversial personality in television by speaking out frankly and frequently—and letting the ratings fall where they may. As a result he has been denounced in Washington, attacked in the press, investigated by the Harris committee and sued by Jimmy Hoffa. Yet, withal, he has hobnobbed with presidents and premiers, corralled sponsors and honors galore, discovered more fine new talent than anyone in television history and written a best seller. Much blood has gone over the dam since Mr. Paar’s best-selling I KID YOU NOT. Since then he has found his fun, feuds and frustrations in far-flung corners of the globe. He fought a bull in Spain, outraged Hawaii and created an international furor in Berlin. All this he ascribes to the inscrutable working of Paar’s Law, which formulates the hypothesis that when Paar comes, can trouble be far behind? Here he gives a colorful account of his travels and travails, including his experiences with President Kennedy, Richard Nixon, Willy Brandt and assorted other famous friends and enemies. We give you then the victim of Paar’s Law; a man who seems to possess two left feet; the electronic Jack the Giant Killer who—after years of tilting with windmills and windbags—stands with saber bent but head unbowed.

This unique work of biblical fiction follows the lives of Saul and Jesus from childhood to the ultimate act of betrayal. Saul of Tarsus: The First Terrorist is a fictionalized account of Saul and how his sin of pride ultimately drove him against Jesus and his followers. It is the story of two boys, Saul and Jesus, similar in age and raised in comparable environments. They studied the same books and learned the same religion from caring parents and teachers. This novel is largely based on historical accounts as revealed through the New Testament, filling in details of what might have happened in the life of Saul. It is a provocative study in contrasts that will inspire readers to revisit the scriptures and see them in a new light.
