In the early 1930s, mobster Meyer Lansky sowed the seeds of gangsterismo when he won Cuban strongman Fulgencio Batista’s support for a mutually beneficial arrangement: the North American Mafia were to share the profits from a future colony of casinos, hotels, and nightclubs with Batista, his inner circle, and senior Cuban Army and police officers. In return, Cuban authorities allowed the Mafia to operate its establishments without interference. Over the next twenty-five years, a gangster state took root in Cuba as Batista, other corrupt Cuban politicians, and senior Cuban army and police officers got rich. Post school years were spent working on farms in the Eastern Transvaal. The second part is a description of living in London from 1954 until 1960 followed by a description of a hitch-hiking trip across Europe and a visit to Israel.

Most probably the readers of this magazine have never heard of the original TRACKS. I was in the very same situation until by the end of 2020, when NZ LRDG-historian Brendan OCarroll has provided me with a hardly readable copy of the June 1941 issue of TRACKS. I was immediately fascinated by these windows into the past and just thought: "We should revive TRACKS! " The editor of the original Tracks was, that time 20 years old, TA Sgt. N.A Moore, a clerk attached to LRDG Group HQ. The June 1941 issue was created by him when the LRDG HQ was located at Kufra. There he got the idea to create a "house paper" for the unit. He recalled in a letter which was published in the 1991 Newsletter of the LRDG Association, that there were only a very limited number of people who were willing to contribute and that this first edition was mainly launched thanks to the contribution of Lieut. Col. Bagnold and Captain Kennedy Shaw. And indeed, the June 1941 remained the single and only issue of Tracks - it was never published again.... until today! After TRACKS 2021, TRACKS 2022 is now the second isue of the "re-vived" magazine.

The Wilsons: Occasionally Broke, But Never Poor is a story about the early days of the Wilson family of Texas, from 1926 to the mid-1960s. It describes the Great Depression and how the family patriarch, Dr. Emilus Wilson, saw most of his eleven kids and their families move back home to Corpus Christi. The book talks about the early days of Jack and his brother, Welcome, at the University of Houston, who were dropped off at the University of Houston with fifty dollars and told that they were on their own. It talks about their successful endeavor to obtain a Houston bank charter in the early 1960s, though they held total cash reserves of six hundred dollars, and their ten-year activity in civil defense during the Cold War (which included witnessing the Atom Bomb test in Nevada). The book concludes with a chapter about Jack Wilson's father, E.E. (Jack) Wilson, one of the great characters of all time.
