Jack Shadbot was inspired in his formative years by hi contact with Emily Carr and with her brooding works portraying the remnants of Indian villages against the overwhelming wilderness. He made sketches of Indian artifacts and the Cowichan Reserve in the 1930s, but it was only after World War II that elements of Indian art began tooshow up in his style. Marjoria Halpin finds in the changes in the way Indian forms occur in Shadbolt’s paintings an appropriate expression of the changing attitudes of British Columbians to native society and the political will the native people now manifest. As she demonstrates, the place of Indian motifs in Shadbolt’s painting can be broadly correlated with the cultural quickening of Indian society in recent years. From the late 1940s until his 1969 retrospective, Shadbolt chiefly used details form Indian sculptures as elements in highly designed watercolours. Subsequently, they became part of more generalized primitives, combining with elements of tribal art of the Southwestern United States and Melanesia. But in the 1980s, the coastal artifacts have become wholly integrated yet autonomous forms in the paintings. Though Jack Shadbolt has never been an ideological artist, he recognizes that his recent works make direct political statements. But he believes his expression of his feelings must continue to be in poetic rather than literal terms. Shadbolt’s paintings reveal his emotional sympathy with Kwagiutl, Haida, and Tlingig forms and his deep response to the Indians’ spiritual and historic preseence in the British Columbia environment. Marjorie Halpin adds an informative and intriguing commentary to the growing body of critical literature on Jack Shadbolt and the varous movements of which he has been a part. Significantly too, she stresse sthe commonality between Canadian native and non-native artists in addressing universal artistic concerns.

The role of the courts and of the rule of law, has been dramatically illustrated by recent litigation, most notably the decisions on whether legislation was needed to serve notice of the UK's intention to leave the EU and whether the prorogation of the Westminster Parliament in 2019 was a matter for the courts as opposed to a political question for government. Capturing the lively modernist milieu of Kenneth Burke’s early career in Greenwich Village, where Burke arrived in 1915 fresh from high school in Pittsburgh, this book discovers him as an intellectual apprentice conversing with “the moderns.” Burke found himself in the midst of an avant-garde peopled by Malcolm Cowley, Marianne Moore, Jean Toomer, Katherine Anne Porter, William Carlos Williams, Allen Tate, Hart Crane, Alfred Stieglitz, and a host of other fascinating figures. Burke himself, who died in 1993 at the age of 96, has been hailed as America’s most brilliant and suggestive critic and the most significant theorist of rhetoric since Cicero. Many schools of thought have claimed him as their own, but Burke has defied classification and indeed has often been considered a solitary, eccentric genius immune to intellectual fashions. But Burke’s formative work of the 1920s, when he first defined himself and his work in the context of the modernist conversation, has gone relatively unexamined. Here we see Burke living and working with the crowd of poets, painters, and dramatists affiliated with Others magazine, Stieglitz’s “291” gallery, and Eugene O’Neill’s Provincetown Players; the leftists associated with the magazines The Masses and Seven Arts; the Dadaists; and the modernist writers working on literary journals like The Dial, where Burke in his capacity as an associate editor saw T. S. Eliot’s “The Wasteland” into print for the first time and provided other editorial services for Thomas Mann, e.e. cummings, Ezra Pound, and many other writers of note. Burke also met the iconoclasts of the older generation represented by Theodore Dreiser and H. L. Mencken, the New Humanists, and the literary nationalists who founded Contact and The New Republic. Jack Selzer shows how Burke’s own early poems, fiction, and essays emerged from and contributed to the modernist conversation in Greenwich Village. He draws on a wonderfully rich array of letters between Burke and his modernist friends and on the memoirs of his associates to create a vibrant portrait of the young Burke’s transformation from aesthete to social critic.

In this book, Anderson exposes boxing’s 'exemption' from contemporary legal and social norms. Reviewing all aspects of boxing - historical, legal, moral, ethical, philosophical, medical, racial and regulatory - he concludes that the supposition that boxing has a (consensual) immunity from the ordinary law of violence, based primarily on its social utility as a recognised sport, is not as robust as is usually assumed. It: suggests that the sport is extremely vulnerable to prosecution and might in fact already be illegal under English criminal law outlines the physical and financial exploitation suffered by individual boxers both inside and outside the ring, suggesting that standard boxing contracts are coercive thus illegal and that boxers do not give adequate levels of informed consent to participate advocates a number of fundamental reforms, including possibly that the sport will have to consider banning blows to the head proposes the creation of a national boxing commission in the US and a similar entity in the United Kingdom, which together would attempt to restore the credibility of a sport long know as the red-light district of sports administration. An excellent book, it is a must read for all those studying sports law, popular culture and the law and jurisprudence.
