This book is a day-to-day account of the life of Jack E. Bates, a resident of Horseheads, New York, while serving his country in World War II. He originally "volunteered" for the infantry in 1944, but transferred to the Army Air Corp. After training as an armor gunner, he was assigned to a crew and sent to Australia where he served with the 2nd Bombardment Squadron, 22nd Bombardment Group, Fifth Air Force. He spent his entire military career, up to the end of the war, in the Pacific theater. The diary follows him as he moves from base to base and throughout his forty-one missions. Jack Bates kept an amazingly accurate account of the things that went on around him including the bombing missions, etc. His diary follows him right through to the end of the war and his arrival back in the United States. The diary is augmented by three maps; a missions chart with detailed information concerning each of his missions; 189 photos of people, places and things; and a list of over two hundred servicemen who came in contact with Jack Bates while he was the postmaster of the unit at the end of the war. A bibliography and an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.

Hack Ward thought he had found a niche market for his skills as a private investigator when Hollywood came to Detroit. When washed up director Will Peyton gets pegged to direct a low-brow family comedy starring a chimp and a perpetual bad-girl pop star, Hack gets brought in by Peyton to keep an eye on starlet Haley Goslin. It's not because Peyton is concerned about her image; it's because Peyton is in love with the younger woman and doesn't want her fooling around on him. It isn't long, however, before events on the set start turning sinister. Hack is on hand the day the chimp has a psychotic episode and attacks Haley. Saving her life sets off a chain of events that bring Hack and Haley closer together and puts them in more and more danger. On the morning she gets called into the set to shoot some additional footage, they have no idea they are getting called into a trap. When it comes to murder, which is the more dangerous animal? Chimp ... or man?
The Newnes Know It All Series takes the best of what our authors have written over the past few years and creates a one-stop reference for engineers involved in markets from communications to embedded systems and everywhere in between. PIC design and development a natural fit for this reference series as it is one of the most popular microcontrollers in the world and we have several superbly authored books on the subject. This material ranges from the basics to more advanced topics. There is also a very strong project basis to this learning. The average embedded engineer working with this microcontroller will be able to have any question answered by this compilation. He/she will also be able to work through real-life problems via the projects contained in the book. The Newnes Know It All Series presentation of theory, hard fact, and project-based direction will be a continual aid in helping the engineer to innovate in the workplace. Section I. Jess Faraday, May 2019: Steampunk writing combines imaginative technological tinkering with a 19th century aesthetic. Cheaply done, that means slap some gears on it, call your protagonist 'Lord Crankshaft' or 'Lady Windlass, ' and get it out the door. But we at Elm Books wanted to dig deeper. The 19th century was a time of exciting scientific developments: steam power, electricity, refrigeration, and so much more that we take for granted today, but that seemed like witchcraft at the time. But it was also a time of great social inequality and ruthless colonial expansion. It was not the best time, for example, to be female, or poor. And it was a terrible time to be an original inhabitant of a colonized land. And the steampunk genre, like every genre, could do better in representing these stories. This anthology brings you some of the stories that go beyond the traditional tropes. Within these pages, you will find lady sharpshooters and dominatrix detectives. You'll encounter vampire forensics, sleuthing Rabbis, and ancient East Asian vendettas exploding onto the streets of East London. And in one spectacular story, one man uncovers a corporate conspiracy to steal the very power of the sun. Perhaps we should have called this anthology Death in the Age of Steam and Sun.
