First published in 1938. A study of the political doctrines and events which led to a hardening of lines between the Royalists and the Parliamentarians. "From the March of 1604, when James I met his first Parliament to the assembly of the Long Parliament in November 1640, there was going on a conflict between irreconcilable views concerning the constitution of government in England. It was concerned with what had been and with what was and, necessarily, with what should be." By 1640 the question soon would be "how stable government could ever again be established . . . But the confusion, if it produced little else of value, produced a ferment of thought." And this ferment has had an incalculable effect on the centuries which have followed. Among the many topics discussed, on the basis of firm knowledge and with reasonableness, are the King and the nature of his claim, the parliamentary opposition and its conceptions and the possibility of compromise, the approach to Toleration, Puritanism and the Laudian Church, and the final collapse of government.
The unbelievable true story of the Cold War’s strangest proxy war, fought between the zoos on either side of the Berlin Wall. “The liveliness of Mohnhaupt’s storytelling and the wonderful eccentricity of his subject matter make this book well worth a read.” —Star Tribune (Minneapolis) Living in West Berlin in the 1960s often felt like living in a zoo, everyone packed together behind a wall, with the world always watching. On the other side of the Iron Curtain, East Berlin and its zoo were spacious and lush, socialist utopias where everything was perfectly planned... and then rarely completed. Berlin’s two zoos in East and West quickly became symbols of the divided city’s two halves. And so no one was terribly surprised when the head zookeepers on either side started an animal arms race: rather than stockpiling nuclear warheads, they competed to have the most pandas and hippos. Soon, state funds were being diverted toward giving these new animals lavish welcomes worthy of visiting dignitaries. West German presidential candidates were talking about zoo policy on the campaign trail. And eventually politicians on both side of the Wall became convinced that if their zoo were proved to be inferior, then that would mean their country’s whole ideology was too. A quirky piece of Cold War history unlike anything you’ve heard before, The Zookeepers’ War is an epic tale of desperate rivalries, human follies, and an animal-mad city in which zookeeping became a way of continuing politics by other means.
Mechanics is one ofthe branches ofphysics in which the number ofprinciples is at once very few and very rich in useful consequences. On the other hand, there are few sciences which have required so much thought-the conquest of a few axioms has taken more than 2000 years. "-Rene Dugas, A History 0/ Mechanics Introductory courses in engineering mechanics (statics and dynamics) are generally found very early in engineering curricula. As such, they should provide the student with a thorough background in the basic fundamentals that form the foundation for subsequent work in engi neering analysis and design. Consequently, our primary goal in writing Statics for Engineers and Dynamics for Engineers has been to develop the fundamental principles of engineering mechanics in a manner that the student can readily comprehend. With this comprehension, the student thus acquires the tools that would enable him/her to think through the solution ofmany types ofengineering problems using logic and sound judgment based upon fundamental principles. Approach We have made every effort to present the material in a concise but clear manner. Each subject is presented in one or more sections fol lowed by one or more examples, the solutions for which are presented in a detailed fashion with frequent reference to the basic underlying principles. A set of problems is provided for use in homework assign ments.
Book Review Reviewed by Lit Amri for Readers Favorite I had no idea just how radically my life was about to be altered that day, the day I met Dr. Wilson J. Wells, a PhD in science and higher mathematics. He was also an inventor. It was June 12, 1980. It all started that day. It was a day I would never forget, as it was the same month I had started the agency four years ago. Maybe this also was an omen. Set in Chicago, Jake Kincannon, PI: Across the Sea of Time by Jw Grodt, features Jake Kincannon, a former homicide detective who opens his own PI business specializing in the paranormal. Together with his assistant and lover Julie Carson, they try to keep the agency afloat by chasing big cases such as the Werewolf Killer. When Dr. Wilson J. Wells offers Jake a lucrative pay packet, he gladly accepts. The job? He needs to travel back in time, May 7, 1937, using Wells time machine Teleporter, and stop the murder of his wife Sheila. I got hooked on the storyline pretty quickly and wanted to know how it all ends. Combining sci-fi elements of time travel makes the story much more exciting and intriguing. Jakes first time travel and plan to save Sheila seems successful, yet there are unpredictable twists that await him. A change in the past, no matter how small, can influence everything else either positively or negatively. Jake Kincannon, PI: Across the Sea of Time shows Jw Grodts skill in developing intricate details that draw you into the characters and the plot. Readers who enjoy vivid scenes would find story cinematic as a whole.
The rumen is an object of study for many types of biological scientist, from anatomists to microbiologists, and more recently even mathematicians. The developments and use of various experimental techniques have enabled much progress to be made in rumen studies. Several chapters of this book concentrate on these techniques and concepts that stem from their application. Biochemical and microbial interrelationships are dealt with fully, with an emphasis on the integrated nature of the rumen's contents. The book concludes by considering the most fruitful approaches that might lead to a more complete understanding of this complex and efficient organ. Each chapter is a complete unit that can be read and understood without reference to other chapters. A general reading list at the end of each chapter, together with more detailed references, will help to launch the student into any specific area of rumen studies.
Reviewed By Sarah Stuart for Readers Favorite Cryptures by Jw Grodt is a collection of ten short stories written for fans of the horror genre in all its many guises. Chilling and spine-tingling, these are dark tales of monsters, invaders, and deadly creatures that multiply in any climate on the planet. Clark Mason, diagnosed with terminal cancer, feels free to share the story of gold miner and guardian of a secret, Crazy Pete, with a group of boys eager to listen. Stanley Portchec was an ordinary family man, until he sees an abandoned truck on his way home from work. Abra Scott and fianc, Jake Barlow, misguidedly decide to spend the night on a forbidden beach. A crew of four sets sail on an innocent exploration of the sea ... and so the readers macabre journey goes on. These hugely entertaining tales arent merely horror, they are extreme horror. Lengths vary, but I defy any reader to stop before the end of one, or indeed putting the book down half-read, assuming one has the courage and the strong stomach required to embark on reading the stories. Any of Jw Grodts longer tales made into a movie would make Final Girl and The Girl who Kicked the Hornets Nest pale into insignificance. What The Night Brings comes to mind, and very likely will in nightmares tonight. Cryptures is a five-star book: brilliant!
