The book is divided into two parts, kharif crops and rabi crops, covering as many as 48 crops. It contains the latest, authoritative and readily usable information about the cultivation techniques, varieties, nutrient/water/weed management along with specific climatic/soil requirements of all the crops. It is essentially a teaching and study material as it is written conforming to ICAR syllabus, strictly considering the limitations of the students and the teachers. Information on each crop is chosen in such a way that it is readily understandable by the undergraduate students and can be explained by the teachers in 22 weeks of a semester. Unnecessary detailing and research information has been avoided. Photographic illustrations of the crops are given to enable the students to understand the morphology of the crop clearly. Related terms, concepts or recent advancements in each crop are highlighted in the box. For a group of related crops, model questions are also given to visualise the probable questions on each crop. An attempt has been made to include the latest statistics from FAO and other global and Indian sources. Points to remember given at the end of each chapter enable the students to have a quick recap of the topic before examination. Further, many general topics, related to field crops, have been covered in eight separate brief chapters, to ensure that the students understand crop-related topics.

Farmers in developing countries are frequently exposed to the uncertainties of weather, prices and disease. Thus decision making behaviour plays a crucial role every day, affecting farming operations. The study was carried out in Raichur, Kalaburagi and Koppal districts. From each district, two taluks were selected and from each taluk, two gram panchayats were selected randomly and from each panchayat a village was selected randomly. From each selected village, 15 farmers were randomly selected and the total sample size constituted 180 respondents. The attitude of farmers towards farming in irrigated situation was better than the attitude of farmers in rainfed situation. The overall decision making behaviour was better in irrigated situation compared to rainfed situation. Achievement motivation and decision making behaviour were found to be significantly influencing the annual agricultural income. As the decision making behaviour score increased by one unit, the annual agricultural income increased by 9231.28. Irrigated rainfed dummy, number of years of schooling, achievement motivation, risk orientation and mass media participation were found to be significantly influencing the institutional participation. In irrigated situation, as evident from the experiment, there were 38 per cent of the respondents in the risk averse category. In the case of rainfed situation, it is alarming to note that as high as 52 per cent of the respondents were in the risk averse group on loss of toss. The irrigated farmers were more likely to take up loan in comparison to rainfed farmers. Number of family members had a positive influence on migration while, the decision making behaviour score had a negative influence on migration. There is evidence of framing bias and anchoring bias among the sample respondents. The farmers were willing to pay more for weather information compared to market and plant protection information.

This book examines the multiple scales at which the inequities of climate change are borne out. Shangrila Joshi engages in a multi-scalar analysis of the myriad ways in which various resource commons – predominantly atmosphere and forests – are implicated in climate governance, with a consistent emphasis throughout on the justice implications for disenfranchised communities. The book starts with an analysis of North-South inequities in responsibility, vulnerability, and capability, as evidenced in global climate treaty negotiations from Rio to Paris. It then moves on to examine the ways in which structural inequalities are built into the conceptualization and operationalization of various neoliberal climate solutions such as Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+) and the Clean Development Mechanism (CDM). Drawing on qualitative interviews conducted in Delhi, Kathmandu, and the Terai region of Nepal, participant observation at the Climate Conference in Copenhagen (COP-15), and textual analysis of official documents, the book articulates a geography of climate justice, considering how ideas of injustice pertaining to colonialism, race, Indigeneity, caste, gender, and global inequality intersect with the politics of scale. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars of environmental justice, climate justice, climate policy, political ecology, and South Asian studies.
