The 1914 Star to the Royal Navy and Royal Marines

The Royal Navy's entitlement to the 1914 Star was almost exclusively restricted to the RN Division though personnel from a few other minor units - including, for example, Sick Berth staff from HMS Pembroke - also qualified. To qualify one had to have served in France/Belgium between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. This splendid work of research lists all those who were entitled to the Star, battalion by battalion, unit by unit. There is an excellent introduction giving the background to the formation of the RN Division and some of the arguments about RN entitlement to the star (the Admiralty was initially against it), and at the end there is a section devoted to the `story' of the Star from the Navy's viewpoint based on selected extracts from the Admiralty case file. Here we can read correspondence between the King, Admiralty and the War Office, Fleet and Army Orders and Press releases. A fascinating document which shows there is more to it than meets the eye in the creation of a campaign medal.

As a young general practitioner new to the field I recall how stimulated and excited I was by reading Dr John W. Todd's papers in the Lancet some 20-30 years ago. It was as though a lot of dust had been blown away and I was able for once to see the situation of medicine much more clearly. He became one of my medical heroes to add to John Ryle, Henry Cohen and Rene Dubois - all of whom have influenced my own approach to medical care and caring of my patients. Now in 1981, it is a pleasure to write an introductory foreword to this book. The State oj Medicine represents the clear and honest thoughts of a most unusual person. Until his retirement John W. Todd was a general physician in Farnham, Surrey. He was relatively unknown to the medical profession outside Surrey apart from his occasional writings. The ten chapters show the build-up of wide experience and deep philosophy that accumulated during his years in practice. I find that I am as stimulated and excited now reading them, as I was 20-30 years ago. I may not agree with all that he writes and others likewise may disagree completely - but I commend the work as an invigorating experience.

It is a privilege to introduce this unusual book. In a time when most docotrs practise medicine as a technical application of the natural sciences, the authors, both experienced clinicians, combine the use of modem techniques with human understanding and psychological management of their patients in the practice of internal medicine. Many of these patients suffer from "psychosomatic disorders", i. e. diseases in which emotional stresses play a major role in the production of the symptoms and/or signs. But just because such a large proportion of all illnesses seen by physicians fall within this category (whether functional or organic), this book is not only a guide to the theory of psychosomatic medicine; it describes the way in which the authors deal with patients in their daily practice. Based on many years of clinical experience and a critical appraisal of the literature, they have developed and tested an approach to what they describe as "psychological management". This is partly based on psychological and psychiatric principles but differs from specialised "psychotherapy" and can be learned and practised by physicians in combination with their technical medical treatment. Extensive attention is paid to the stresses, ambivalences and incompatibilities which the patients encounter in their communication with the key figures in their family and at work, and to which they have unsuccesfully tried to adapt without having been able to solve the problems actively.

This book examines contemporary educational research and its governance, addressing key questions via a multidisciplinary theoretical framework of comparative institutional analysis with original data and applying multiple methods. The authors explore and explain important changes in the governance of educational research and the contents of scholarship in education and related disciplines across Europe since the 1990s. This volume synthesizes findings from a multi-year comparative research project, including in-depth empirical case studies of three distinct educational research cultures evolving in Germany, Norway, and the United Kingdom. The authors reconstruct and compare changing conceptualizations of educational research, embedded in increasingly internationalized contexts of research, and examine shifts in its governance, including patterns of funding, publication, and evaluation. They examine the producers of European educational research and the distinct role of the European Union in constructing a European Educational Research Area, in establishing cross-border networks, and in (re)shaping educational research agendas. Through innovative empirical analysis of programs of research on various levels and education researchers’ collaborations in scientific networks, they provide insights into (supra)national dynamics in education-related scholarship. The use of air photographs as an aid to understanding and mapping natural resources has long been an established technique. The advent of satellite imagery was, and indeed by many still is, regarded as a very high altitude air photograph, but with the introduction of digital techniques the full analysis of imagery has become very sophisticated. Radar imagery presents the resource scientist with a new imaging technique that has to be understood and used, a technique which, although in many respects still in its infancy, has considerable applications potential for resources studies. Remote sensing now forms an element in study courses in the earth sciences in many major universities and a number of universities offer specialist post-graduate courses in remote sensing. Nevertheless there are a large number of earth scientists already working with imagery who have progressed from the air photograph base to satellite imagery. Such scientists may find themselves confronted with microwave or radar imagery or wish to use the imagery for surveys and find themselves hindered by a lack of understanding of the differences between radar imagery and optical imagery. Unfortunately reference to much of the literature will not be of very great help, many excellent text books on the theory and interaction of microwaves, on instrument design and construction and on the research carried out on specific target types exist, most of these are however written for specialists who are usually physicists not earth scientists.
