It is a feature of the history of the subject that the study of atomic physics was accompanied by a partial neglect of that of classical mechanics. This led to the unsatisfactory situation in which the physicist was expected to assimilate the elements of quantum and statistical mechanics without understanding the classical foundations on which these subjects were built. The situation has improved in recent years through the general lengthening of degree courses, and it is now usual to study the analytical formulation at the late under graduate stage. A number of excellent treatises are available, and there are also many elementary accounts to be found in general works on physical principles. However, there has been available so far no self-contained introduction to the subject which provides the beginner with a broad general review without involving him in too much detail. It is hoped that this book may bridge the gap by pro viding the experimental physicist with a sufficient background for his theoretical understanding and the theorist with some stimulus to study the masterpieces of the subject. The mathematical equipment required is no more than in the normal honours physics course. For the purposes of Chapters IX XI it includes an elementary knowledge of cartesian tensors. A familiarity with Newtonian mechanics and some acquaintance with special relativity theory are presumed, though summarizing accounts are also given.

There are many recent works on the topic of light and plant growth. These have not only been written by experts, but are also, in the main, written for experts (or, at least, for those who already have a fair understanding of the subject). This book has its origins in a six-week course in plant photophysiology, and its aim is to provide an introduction to the subject at an advanced undergraduate level. The imagined audience is simply a student who has asked the questions: In what ways does light affect plant growth, and how does it do it? The book is limited to aspects of photomorphogenesis. Photo synthesis is only considered where its pigments impinge on photo morphogenic investigations, or where its processes provide illustrative examples of particular interactions between light and biological material. Chapter 1 gives a general account of the various ways in which light affects plant development, and introduces topics which are subsequently covered in greater detail. In all the chapters, are special topic 'boxes', consisting of squared-off sections of text. These are simply devices for presenting explanatory background material, or material that I myself find particularly intriguing.

This diary is written from notes made daily by the author when he was signal sergeant to Lieutenant-Colonel P.L.Clowes, who commanded the regiment during the war until October 1901, and afterwards from notes made when he was a squadron sergeant-major and Orderly-Room Sergeant (ORS). It also incorporates the diary of C Squadron, when detached from the regiment, written by its OC, Major A.Henderson, and that of A Squadron during the time it was with Colonel Pulteney's Column, written by Major F.W.Mussenden, squadron OC. It begins with a short, background history of the regiment from its formation in 1693 to 1903 when it was in Aldershot. On 26th December 1899 the regiment was at the Curragh when mobilization orders were received and on 13th February 1900 the regiment embarked at Queenstown (Cobh) for S Africa, part of the 4th Cavalry Brigade with 7th Dragoon Guards and 17th Lancers. Embarkation strength was 19 officers, 586 WOs, NCOs and men and 487 horses (someone was going to have to walk!). The complete nominal roll of those embarking is given, listed by squadrons. The diary begins on 13th Feb followed by daily entries describing the voyage during which eleven horses and one crew member died; it ended at Cape Town on 10th March. It is on this daily entry basis that the progress of the regiment is described, in action, on the move, in camp with all the problems of campaigning on the veldt - sickness, food and water shortage, supplies and other details. Casualties are noted by name and rank and number as they occurred, each draft arriving is listed by number, rank and name and this aspect is a godsend to medallists and genealogists. We meet officers who will have a part to play in the next war - French, Plumer, Pulteney, Hamilton and others. The memorial in St Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin, lists three officers and 51 other ranks dead; the description of the unveiling ceremony as published in the Dublin Mail andEvening Mail is reproduced at the end of the book.

The construction industry is becoming increasingly aware of the need to adopt a holistic approach to the design, building, and disposal of structures. With 60 per cent of the total construction budget in most developed countries being spent on repair and maintenance, there is an obvious need to design for reliability and durability, with more carefully planned maintenance and repair schedules. One important facet is to look at how costs are distributed and spent during the lifetime of a structure: an approach known as life cycle costing, which has the ultimate aim of minimising total lifetime expenditure. As an example, choosing an inexpensive coating for steelwork may require maintenance every three years, whereas a coating which is more expensive may require repairing only once per decade. It is a question of balance - taking the lifetime costs of the structure into consideration.
