John William Salter (1820-1869) was an English naturalist and geologist, best known for his work as palaeontologist to the Geological Survey of Great Britain. This is a complete catalogue of the Cambrian and Silurian fossils in the Geological Museum at the University of Cambridge. Preceded by a detailed introductory section on the Pal'ozoic system, the catalogue is arranged by geological strata, covering the various groups of Cambrian and Silurian fossils. The entries include detailed illustrations, along with references to the location of each fossil in the collection, its name and details of its place of origin. Revised by staff of the University and published posthumously in 1873, the catalogue also contains a substantial preface by Adam Sedgwick, famous for his role in the development of modern geology,which provides fascinating insights into the geological advances of the Victorian era.

Although the chemistry of boron is still relatively young, it is developing at a pace where even specific areas of research are difficult to compile into a monograph. Besides the boron hydrides, boron-nitrogen compounds are among the most fascinating derivatives of boron. Nitrogen compounds exist in a wide variety of molecular structures and display many interesting properties. The combination of nitrogen and boron, however, has some unusual features that are hard to match in any other combination of elements. This situation was first recognized by ALFRED STOCK and it seems proper to pay tribute to his outstanding work in the area of boron chemistry. One should realize that about forty years ago, STOCK and his coworkers had to develop completely new experimental techniq'\les and that no guidance for the interpreta tion of their rather unusual data had been advanced by theoretical chemists. In this monograph an attempt has been made to explore the general characteristics of structure and the principles involved in the preparation and reactions of boron-nitroge~ compounds. It was a somewhat difficult task to select that information which appears to be of the most interest to "inorganic and general chemistry" since the electronic relationship between a boron-nitrogen and a carbon-carbon grouping is reflected in the "organic" character of many of the reactions and compounds.

This book was first published in 1980. A great number of metallic materials in practical use owe their strength to the presence in their microstructure of particles of a hard precipitated phase. The text emphasises the importance of scientific rather than empirical methods in attempting to develop particle-hardened alloys. The author progresses from an elementary knowledge of metallurgy to theories relating to the deformation and fracture of alloys of this type. He also discusses the use of such theories to describe observations on both model materials and practical metals. After a discussion of the microstructures of these alloys, how they form and how to describe them quantitatively, their deformation and fracture behaviour at both low and elevated temperatures are examined.

The Royal Navy's entitlement to the 1914 Star was almost exclusively restricted to the RN Division though personnel from a few other minor units - including, for example, Sick Berth staff from HMS Pembroke - also qualified. To qualify one had to have served in France/Belgium between 5th August and 22nd November 1914. This splendid work of research lists all those who were entitled to the Star, battalion by battalion, unit by unit. There is an excellent introduction giving the background to the formation of the RN Division and some of the arguments about RN entitlement to the star (the Admiralty was initially against it), and at the end there is a section devoted to the `story' of the Star from the Navy's viewpoint based on selected extracts from the Admiralty case file. Here we can read correspondence between the King, Admiralty and the War Office, Fleet and Army Orders and Press releases. A fascinating document which shows there is more to it than meets the eye in the creation of a campaign medal.
