J. Oort and J.P.A. Baak This manual is written by pathologists and is meant for pathologists. It deals with a subject that became especially popular in pathology at the end of the last decade: morphometry. Morphometry is defined as the quantitative description of a structure (Weibel, 1969). This structure may be both of macroscopic and micro scopic size. Strictly, the size of an organ is a morphometric feature. This type of morphometry has long been in use in pathology. Examples ofthis type in diagnostic pathology have been given by Roesle and Roulet (1932). In this manual, however, the term morphometry is used in its re stricted microscopic meaning, i.e., the quantitative description of micro scopic images and features. The quantitative analysis of microscopic pic tures has for a long time been subordinated to the qualitative description. This may partly have been caused by the preference of the human mirld for pattern recognition rather than quantitative appraisal, which leads to judgements based on impressions subconsciously tested against the ob server's (mental) image of the normal pattern. Another cause may have been the time-consuming difficulties of collecting and computing quanti tative information. During the past decades the usefulness of quantitative methods in histo- and cytopathology has been stressed for many different subjects. In addition, minicomputers have become widely available and are becoming increasingly inexpensive; the more so since the introduction of micro com puters.

Mike intends to continue in the quiet and peaceful life of a philosophy professor, but his friend, Ron, seems dead-set on rewriting the laws of physics. As Ron delves deeper into a hair-brained theory of his own, he discovers another world, invisible and intangible to us, but existing in the same space as our world. Ron persuades Mike to join him, and together they traverse the harsh conditions of an alien world locked in war. "At that moment, I was no longer Michael. I was no longer intellectual or diplomatic. The time for that was gone. Now it was the time to act. Now was the time of reckoning. I became a force. I became death and destruction. I became blood and fire. My heart pounded to the beat of an instinctive, primitive, and intrinsic war drum. I was prosecutor, judge, jury, and executioner. I was the tribunal. The crime had been committed. Justice required punishment. And I was there to deliver. Deliver I did. My battle cry delivered the accusation. My weapon served the verdict. And the rounds fired from my gun executed the sentence. "Do I look back on my actions with pride? No. Would I have spared them if there was another way? Yes. I wish I could have spared them. I wish I could have let them be. But they would not let Edengone be. Then can I reflect on my choices and look virtue and justice in the eye with confidence? Yes; a resounding and emphatic yes. The correct action is not always a pleasant or happy one, but it is necessary and always the best action. How do I justify my actions? That is between me and the powers I answer to. Let the world think of me as they will. I was trained to destroy, but more importantly, I was trained to know when to destroy. I do not reflect on my actions with any pride, but I do not reflect with any doubt, either.

Vincent van Gogh’s life and work are so intertwined that it is hardly possible to observe one without thinking of the other. Van Gogh has indeed become the incarnation of the suffering, misunderstood martyr of modern art, the emblem of the artist as an outsider. An article, published in 1890, gave details about van Gogh’s illness. The author of the article saw the painter as “a terrible and demented genius, often sublime, sometimes grotesque, always at the brink of the pathological.” Very little is known about Vincent’s childhood. At the age of eleven he had to leave “the human nest”, as he called it himself, for various boarding schools. The first portrait shows us van Gogh as an earnest nineteen year old. At that time he had already been at work for three years in The Hague and, later, in London in the gallery Goupil & Co. In 1874 his love for Ursula Loyer ended in disaster and a year later he was transferred to Paris, against his will. After a particularly heated argument during Christmas holidays in 1881, his father, a pastor, ordered Vincent to leave. With this final break, he abandoned his family name and signed his canvases simply “Vincent”. He left for Paris and never returned to Holland. In Paris he came to know Paul Gauguin, whose paintings he greatly admired. The self-portrait was the main subject of Vincent’s work from 1886c88. In February 1888 Vincent left Paris for Arles and tried to persuade Gauguin to join him. The months of waiting for Gauguin were the most productive time in van Gogh’s life. He wanted to show his friend as many pictures as possible and decorate the Yellow House. But Gauguin did not share his views on art and finally returned to Paris. On 7 January, 1889, fourteen days after his famous self-mutilation, Vincent left the hospital where he was convalescing. Although he hoped to recover from and to forget his madness, but he actually came back twice more in the same year. During his last stay in hospital, Vincent painted landscapes in which he recreated the world of his childhood. It is said that Vincent van Gogh shot himself in the side in a field but decided to return to the inn and went to bed. The landlord informed Dr Gachet and his brother Theo, who described the last moments of his life which ended on 29 July, 1890: “I wanted to die. While I was sitting next to him promising that we would try to heal him. [...], he answered, ‘La tristesse durera toujours (The sadness will last forever).’”

For Paul Desilets, the suicide of his twin brother will mean a constant state of mental paralysis unless he finds a new vision of life and gains deeper insight into himself. After several months of spiritual retreat in a monastery, he decides to serve as a lay missionary among the Maya people of Guatemala. Soon after, he is sent to a small parish to help missionary priest Father John Callaghan fulfill his last assignment. Fascinated by the pre-Columbian spiritual and cultural traditions that still survive among the Mayas, Desilets gains valuable insights into their unique way of knowing about the world and human experience. But after just eighteen months of working with the Mayas, he finds himself caught in the midst of mounting political tensions when the fragile bridge between the indigenous population and the Ladino rulers threatens to collapse. Now it may not be enough to just live with the oppressed. He may also have to be willing to sacrifice his life for them. Will he be able to achieve his mission in a country run by a dictatorship and where foreign missionaries are suspected of having links with leftist organizations?
