But while Judean prophets displayed outrage for the injustices these changes caused, their texts are often devoid of socio-economic context. Identities of perpetrators, victims, and even the nature of their actions are often absent. This book sheds light on those contexts by employing a recurring pattern found around the world and across time as subsistence communities are absorbed into complex economic systems. In addition to outlining this pattern’s presence in Judah’s archaeological record, Coomber turns the lens in the other direction to gain new insights from a recent example of this pattern’s unfolding: Tunisia’s absorption into international capitalism. In the social sciences, phenomena tend to be hierarchically structured, so that individuals belong to groups, and groups belong to larger organizations and societies. Multilevel research stresses this hierarchical structure of social life, and necessarily assumes the existence of a particular organization of the procedures of investigation. This organization, which is fundamental to the research, is called a research design. Because the research is hierarchical, it uses a multilevel design. This book provides a detailed overview of the theoretical and methodological aspects of multilevel research based on the multilevel definition of social structure. Six chapters discuss the foundations of multilevel research and the applications of its research in the social sciences. Almost four decades have passed since Formal Grammars first appeared in 1974. At that time it was still possible to rather comprehensively review for (psycho)linguists the relevant literature on the theory of formal languages and automata, on their applications in linguistic theory and in the psychology of language. That is no longer feasible. In all three areas developments have been substantial, if not breathtaking. Nowadays, an interested linguist or psycholinguist opening any text on formal languages can no longer see the wood for the trees, as it is by no means evident which formal, mathematical tools are really required for natural language applications. An historical perspective can be helpful here. There are paths through the wood that have been beaten since decades; they can still provide useful orientation. The origins of these paths can be traced in the three volumes of Formal Grammars, brought together in the present re-edition. In a newly added postscript the author has sketched what has become, after all these years, of formal grammars in linguistics and psycholinguistics, or at least some of the core developments. This chapter may provide further motivation for the reader to make a trip back to some of the historical sources.
The major cause of death in the Western world is some form of vascular disease; and principal among these forms is atherosclerotic heart disease (ASHD). Although much is known about the etiology and treatment of ASHD, there is, as yet, no specific means of prognosis of an impending coronary episode. There are, however, several indications of susceptibility to coronary disease, generally known as risk factors, the foremost of which is hyperlipidemia. Hyperlipidemia is more commonly designated as hypercholesteremia or triglyceridemia, depending upon which moiety is elevated, but since lipids are transported in the blood as members of a lipoprotein complex, the most descriptive general term would be hyperlipoproteinemia. This volume represents an effort to elucidate the origins and metabolic behavior of lipoproteins and their components, to describe aspects of the morphology, biochemistry and experimental induction of ASHD, and to describe modalities of treatment. The contributions to this book include descriptions of cholesterol synthesis and metabolism, as well as the metabolism of bile acids, the principal products of cholesterol metabolism. There are also chapters on the mechanisms of hyperlipidemia and on lipoprotein metabolism. The induction of experimental atherosclerosis and the aortic structural changes caused by this disease are discussed.

Does the use of the Internet in any way contribute to a student’s learning process, and if yes, precisely what added value does this represent? This question – and more specifically the attempt to answer it – is what lies at the heart of this dissertation, which considers the issue from a number of perspectives based on experiences, opinions and academic theories. This is done through the analysis of a new and innovative educational concept: Virtual Action Learning. Virtual Action Learning (VAL) is an educational concept that was designed to connect with the personal learning environments of people who live in a world where technology and social media play a dominant role. In other words, a world in which information is processed in an interactive and visual manner within the context of ever-changing situations and processes that demand ever higher levels of individual responsibility. The application of VAL concerns a way of learning that is different from what is common: VAL is based on social-constructivist learning theory in combination with an intensive use of ICT in the student's learning process. This takes place in the Virtual Learning Community (VLC), an electronic learning environment developed to support the learning process. In addition to the educational characteristics of the VAL concept, a managerial perspective can be distinguished that involves the way in which schools and universities organise their processes in order to facilitate learning. This process approach, born in the nineteen-nineties, is grounded in a number of business theories. The VAL concept distinguishes three primary processes: the learning process, for which the student carries responsibility, and the processes related to teaching and assessment, for which the instructor is held responsible. With the help of design principles that are firmly based on theory, we first describe the way in which the learning process evolves. The ensuing assessment process is closely linked with the educational process, but is first and foremost geared towards the learning process of individual students. By connecting the above-mentioned process activities via a Feedback and Reflection Cycle, it becomes possible to establish a strong connection between a course’s contents and its related competences. To achieve this, we need to ensure that - throughout the course - participants are continuously engaged in a Meaningful Dialogue: interaction and the mutual exchange of constructive feedback, not only among students themselves, but also among students and their teachers. This is partly done in the VLC and partly during meetings held at school, a process for which new (virtual) educational forms have been designed and which focuses on the power of feedback provided and received by students on their specific learning products in the VLC. Within the VAL concept, the Meaningful Dialogue is considered to be the measure of good quality education that is supported by ICT.

In War and Revolution in South China, Edward Rhoads recounts his childhood and early teenage years during the Sino-Japanese War and the early postwar years. Rhoads came from a biracial family. His father was an American professor while his Chinese mother was a typist and stenographer. In the late 1930s and the 1940s, the Rhoads family lived through the turbulent years in southern China and Hong Kong. The book follows Rhoads’ childhood in Guangzhou, his family’s evacuation to Hong Kong, his father’s internment and repatriation to the United States, and his and his mother’s flight to Free China. He recalls his reunion with family members in northern Guangdong Province in 1943, their retreat to China’s wartime capital of Chongqing, where his father worked for the American government, and how they returned to Guangzhou after the war. The Rhoads family then witnessed the socioeconomic recovery in the city and the regime change in 1949. The book ends with their departure from China to the United States in 1951, a year and a half after the Communist revolution. The book fills an important gap in the scholarship by examining the impact of the Sino-Japanese War in southern China from the perspective of one family. Rhoads reveals that the war in this region, while often neglected by scholars, was in fact no less turbulent than it was in northern and central China.
