The main aim of this book is to introduce Lie groups and allied algebraic and geometric concepts to a robotics audience. These topics seem to be quite fashionable at the moment, but most of the robotics books that touch on these topics tend to treat Lie groups as little more than a fancy notation. I hope to show the power and elegance of these methods as they apply to problems in robotics. A subsidiary aim of the book is to reintroduce some old ideas by describing them in modem notation, particularly Study's Quadric-a description of the group of rigid motions in three dimensions as an algebraic variety (well, actually an open subset in an algebraic variety)-as well as some of the less well known aspects of Ball's theory of screws. In the first four chapters, a careful exposition of the theory of Lie groups and their Lie algebras is given. Except for the simplest examples, all examples used to illustrate these ideas are taken from robotics. So, unlike most standard texts on Lie groups, emphasis is placed on a group that is not semi-simple-the group of proper Euclidean motions in three dimensions. In particular, the continuous subgroups of this group are found, and the elements of its Lie algebra are identified with the surfaces of the lower Reuleaux pairs. These surfaces were first identified by Reuleaux in the latter half of the 19th century.

Whilst inactivity may still be the treatment of choice in certain cases, it should only be carried out with the full knowledge that all is well, and this obviously will involve the use and understanding of new investigations and techniques. In my opinion the authors have achieved their aims and though there are those who may always have reservations, they must surely accept the authors' appraisal of the modern approach to this science. The concept of guanxi is used extensively in Chinese society. Loosely understood as 'connections' or 'networks', it refers to long-term mutually reinforcing exchanges between individuals based on affective and normative commitments. This book comprehensively examines the nature and background of this extremely significant and distinct feature of Chinese social, political, economic, and business relations. It takes account of the major theoretical frameworks that relate to the long-term connections that are developed to pursue instrumental advantage in a society marked by relatively weak legal and regulatory institutions. The book locates such theorizing in the major features of the rapidly evolving Chinese market society. Yet it also pays attention to the historical origins and cultural sources of a highly particularistic approach to the acquisition of social and material resources -- an approach which relies on obligatory relations of favour exchange between persons who self-consciously and strategically select their associates and goals. This sociological treatment of guanxi challenges many dominant conventions and introduces a novel research approach which captures the pertinent psychological dispositions, cultural expressions, and institutional frameworks that underpin the phenomenon.

Breast cancer is a major health problem in the Western world, where it is the most common cancer among women. Approximately 1 in 12 women will develop breast cancer during the course of their lives. Over the past twenty years there have been a series of major advances in the manage ment of women with breast cancer, ranging from novel chemotherapy and radiotherapy treatments to conservative surgery. The next twenty years are likely to see computerized image analysis playing an increasingly important role in patient management. As applications of image analysis go, medical applications are tough in general, and breast cancer image analysis is one of the toughest. There are many reasons for this: highly variable and irregular shapes of the objects of interest, changing imaging conditions, and the densely textured nature of the images. Add to this the increasing need for quantitative informa tion, precision, and reliability (very few false positives), and the image pro cessing challenge becomes quite daunting, in fact it pushes image analysis techniques right to their limits.

The conference brought together participants with a variety of interests in theoretical and experimental aspects of alloys from Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, People's Republic of Congo,Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, U. S. S. R. , and Venezuela. The conference was purposely designed to succinctly cover experimental and the oretical aspects of magnetic and non-magnetic alloys, surfaces, thin films and nanos tructures. The Conference opened with an overview of a select class of advanced structural materials, with a potential in engineering applications, for which the con ventional "physics" approach, both theoretical and experimental, should have a sig nificant impact. A number of papers were dedicated to the use of phenomenological approaches for the description of thermodynamic bulk and surface properties. It was clear from these presentations that the phenomenological models and simulations in alloy theory have reached a high degree of sophistication. Although with somewhat limited predictive powers, the phenomenological models provide a valuable tool for the understanding of a variety of subtle phenomena such as short-range order, phase stability, kinetics and the thermodynamics of surfaces and antiphase boundaries, to name a few.

Although distant metastases are the most dreaded situation in the evolution of cancer of every organ, the medical literature has surprisingly given little attention to the anatomical relationship between the primary tumor and metastasic sites. Only risk factors, treatment possibilities, and survival results are extensively examined. Stimulated by the occurrence in his practice of some puzzling and unexpected metastases, the author reviewed more than 12,000 references. He looked for anatomical relationships highlighting the relation between the location of the primary tumors and the particular patterns of metastasis observed. It would seem that the `pathways and flows' are apparently a more decisive factor in the implantation of the metastases than the `seed and soil' properties of the cancer cells and the metastatic site. Aided by his colleague Dr. T. Geukens, M.D., the author includes original anatomical drawings, illustrating the sometimes unexpected pathways the cancer cells follow in order to reach the organs where they will become lodged and give rise to metastatic tumors. The subject has apparently not been exhausted in the literature and several ideas are given for further research.
