While bracing for the inevitable confrontation with Nat, Mattie and Garin find more than just themselves caught in a web of their enemy’s design. The true identities of all who had participated in the weaving are exposed, showing just how patient the vile creature had been with her plans. And though there seems to be little hope of victory, the couple will still do everything in their power to thwart her schemes.
While Mattie remains behind in Crosshawk, Garin is being led back to the Arduenna Kingdom and to memories of a difficult past. A separation made even more uncomfortable when various revelations come to light. And though an unexpected ally eventually comes to Garin’s aid, the help might not be enough to thwart the plans Iantha has always had in mind for her youngest son.
While Garin hopes he can free the elves from Iantha’s evil influence, Mattie finds herself stuck with a princely bodyguard. Though not appreciated at first, it quickly becomes apparent that Renard’s presence in Crosshawk is a necessary evil. Sides are starting to form in regards to the coming conflict, altering many kinships during the process. No matter the eventual outcome, some things will never be the same.

The porphyrins are a class of naturally-occurring macrocycles and are ubiquitous in our world. As such, they have been called the Pigments of Life. This auspicious designation reflects their importance in numerous biological functions. Indeed, life as we understand it relies on the full range of biological processes that are either performed by or catalyzed by porphyrin-containing proteins. Chlorophyll-containing photosynthetic reaction centers in plants, for instance, convert light energy into chemical energy while producing oxygen along the way. It is this oxygen, evolved from photosynthesis, that is transported, stored, and reduced by heme-containing proteins in many organisms, including mammals. Not surprisingly, therefore, these molecules remain of fundamental interest to chemists and biochemists. Indeed, they continue to be intensely investigated by researchers world-wide.Inspired by the importance of the porphyrins, a new research direction has emerged in recent years that is devoted to the preparation and study of non-porphyrin polypyrrole macrocycles. Here, the principal objectives have been to generate completely synthetic systems that bear some structural resemblance to naturally-occurring porphyrin derivatives while being quite different in their specific chemical makeup. Within this context, three different research directions have evolved, namely those involving the syntheses of contracted, isomeric, and expanded porphyrins, respectively. It is the chemistry of these systems that is the subject of this book. Because of the newness of the field, the emphasis of this book will be on synthesis and characterization (all work on porphyrin isomers and much of that associated with expanded porphyrins has only appeared in the last 10 years). One chapter on applications has, however, been included. Also, in the context of the preparative portions of the text, some efforts have been made to explain why various porphyrin analogue targets are of interest.

Black in Selma is the expansive autobiography of J. L. Chestnut Jr., a key figure of the civil rights movement in Selma, Alabama. Born in Selma in 1930, Chestnut left home to study law at Howard University in Washington, DC. Returning to Selma, Chestnut was the town's first and only African American attorney in the late 1950s. As the turbulent struggle for civil rights spread across the South, Chestnut became an active and assiduous promoter of social and legal equality in his hometown. A key player on the local and state fronts, Chestnut accrued deep insights into the racial tensions in his community and deftly opened paths toward a more equitable future. Though intimately involved in many events that took place in Selma, Chestnut was nevertheless often identified in history books as simply "a local attorney." The papers in this book represent the proceedings for the International Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High~Tc Superconductors, held April 18-21, 1989 at the International Centre for Theoretical Physics, Trieste, Italy. It was recognized very early in the field of ceramic superconductors that oxygen plays a crucial role as far as the physical properties of these ma terials are concerned. The preparation requires special heating and cooling cycles which allow proper uptake of oxygen, relationships were found between the oxygen concentration and the superconducting transition temperature in many of the compounds and quite recently it was recognized that many (if not all) of the compounds present oxygen ordering in the intercalating planes. Moreover, it seems that the presence of superconductivity is strongly correlated with the presence of orthorhombic phases although several groups have also claimed the presence of superconductivity in tetragonal phases. Whether oxygen ordering plays or not a crucial role for the superconductivity remains to be seen. However it is clear that the ordering of oxygens and their thermodynamic properties is an interesting subject on its own right. All these reasons led us to organize a Conference on Oxygen Disorder Effects in High-Tc Superconductors in attempt to identify unsolved problems and to have an open discussion of the presently known facts.

This vohune contains the papers presented at the Adriatico Research Conference on Structural and Phase Stability of Alloys held in Trieste, Italy, in May 1991, under the auspices of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics. The conference brought together participants with a variety of interests in theoretical and experimental aspects of alloys from Argentina, Belgium, Bulgaria, Czechslovakia, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Mexico, People's Republic of Congo,Portugal, Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, U. S. S. R. , and Venezuela. The conference was purposely designed to succinctly cover experimental and the oretical aspects of magnetic and non-magnetic alloys, surfaces, thin films and nanos tructures. The Conference opened with an overview of a select class of advanced structural materials, with a potential in engineering applications, for which the con ventional "physics" approach, both theoretical and experimental, should have a sig nificant impact. A number of papers were dedicated to the use of phenomenological approaches for the description of thermodynamic bulk and surface properties. It was clear from these presentations that the phenomenological models and simulations in alloy theory have reached a high degree of sophistication. Although with somewhat limited predictive powers, the phenomenological models provide a valuable tool for the understanding of a variety of subtle phenomena such as short-range order, phase stability, kinetics and the thermodynamics of surfaces and antiphase boundaries, to name a few.
At the start of the 21st century, some 2 million Europeans were detained against their will in prisons, police stations, mental health institutions or other detention centres. It is generally recognised that protection against the arbitrary deprivation of liberty and the prevention of ill-treatment reflect the extent to which states respect human rights and human dignity, when these can be jeopardised by demands for security and efficiency. This book describes the European system for the protection of people deprived of their liberty and how this has evolved over the past fifty years. It discusses the different initiatives taken by the Council of Europe in this area, of which the European Convention on Human Rights and the Convention for the Prevention of Torture and Inhuman or Degrading Treatment or Punishment are the most significant.
Several textbooks and useful compendia on fisheries have been published recently, and others are in preparation. The question then arises: why publish another book on fisheries at this time? My answer is 1) that fishery research and management are such broad subjects that it is difficult, if not impossible, to cover them adequately in one volume; 2) that consequently each author has stressed those aspects of greatest immediate interest to him; and 3) that to the best of my knowl edge no adequate broad treatment of the sociopolitical aspects of fishery management has yet ·appeared, although some good discussions have been published for particular fisheries. This volume grew out of a course that I have taught for the last 12 years at the State University of New Yo·rk at Stony Brook. Originally, the title of the course was Fishery Ecology, which was a matter of surprise to some students when they attended the fi rst few 1 ectures. Despite the sudden recent emergence of ecology as a household word, most people do not understand what the term means. I have found that even some graduate students forget that man is a potent force in the dynamic state of aquatic life. This is not only because he does things that change the environment and so affects living things in it, but also because he has such strange ways of thinking and of managing his affairs.
This study is an outgrowth of our interest in the history of modern chemistry. The paucity of reliable, quantitative knowledge about past science was brought home forcibly to us when we undertook a research seminar in the comparative history of modern chemistry in Britain, Germany, and the United States. That seminar, which took place at the University of Pennsylvania in the spring of 1975, was paralleled by one devoted to the work of the "Annales School". The two seminars together catalyzed the attempt to construct historical measures of change in aspects of one science, or "chem ical indicators". The present volume displays our results. Perhaps our labors may be most usefully compared with the work of those students of medieval science who devote their best efforts to the establish ment of texts. Only when acceptable texts have been constructed from fragmentary and corrupt sources can scholars move on to the more satisfying business of making history. So too in the modern period, a necessary pre liminary to the full history of any scientific profession is the establishing of reliable quantitative information in the form of statistical series. This volume does not offer history. Instead it provides certain element- indicators -- that may be useful to individuals interested in the history of American chemistry and chemical industry, and suggestive for policy.
