TROUBLED TIMES The freight drivers, having been given unwanted custody of Boyd Berry, unloaded him on the inhabitants of Meadowville. Boyd lost his farm during the Great Depression and moved to Pioche, Nevada to be a miner. He and his wife were lured by a demon into a gaping hole in the ground left over from the search for coal. The Sterling family took in young Nathan Berry, and he became as one of their own. WWII started and Tom Sterling went sheep shearing, when the season was over the family settled down in Provo, Utah. Gary and Nathan joined the Navy—Gary to be a sailor—Nathan to be a Marine Corpsman...but the Devil hadn’t finished with the Sterling family yet. Nathan is captured by the Chinese near the Chosin Reservoir and Gary and a shipmate are left behind while attempting to save a wounded Marine during the evacuation of the marines at Hungnam. The Chinese army is looking for them, and their survival is seriously in question.

In itself, Chapin’s World has stood alone as a vast storehouse of worthless, yard-sale memories and nearly forgotten calamities. Most of which could have been avoided with a simple plan, or root intelligence. Even though the author’s wife, Sunshine, has rounded out most of his rough edges, she admits that no job was too small for Chapin to not make big mistakes. Chapin displays a collection of inept, unwanted constructions, and suffers through unpleasant circumstances with humorous shenanigans. Feel free to jeer at Papa’s inability to decorate for Christmas with the Grandlings, or escape jury duty. Take an unscheduled ride to a home away from home, investigate a blown fuse, and relive a feeble attempt to dismantle an old-fashioned TV antenna. Treasures of the Past will drag you through the scream door, and allow you to be overrun by buffalos and rude dogs. You won’t know whether to bow before the author, or call the caretakers, because no one appears to be safe from the devious disclosures of JC. Treasures of the Past would be considered outrageous, and totally fabricated exaggerations, if the author’s personality was not so well documented. Beware; the most ‘self-loved’ author has unleashed some newly penned mischief. Go ahead -- turn these pages for a memorable dose of humor in Chapin’s World: Treasures of the Past.

This book is an impressive attempt by a distinguished British theologian to grapple with problems put to him by friends from the Third World and particularly the question: "If there seems no way to alter a situation except by joining in violent revolution, is it possible to be involved and still remain a Christian?" In his discussion, Professor Davies first considers how far obedience is a constant imperative and in what circumstances disobedience may be the right choice. As resistance to the state is necessarily to act illegally, he then reviews the subject of law and order. To this point the considerations are largely theological. However, the climax of the book comes in a discussion of revolution in human terms, together with the criticisms often raised against it. There is also a survey of the means of revolution, non-violent and violent, and the basis of Christian moral choice in such a situation.

This is a revised edition by David Herbert Donald of his former professor J. G. Randall’s book The Civil War and Reconstruction, which was originally published in 1937 and had long been regarded as “the standard work in its field”, serving as a useful basic Civil War reference tool for general readers and textbook for college classes. This Second Edition retains many of the original chapters, “such as those treating border-state problems, non-military developments during the war, intellectual tendencies, anti-war efforts, religious and educational movements, and propaganda methods [...] bearing evidence of Mr. Randall’s thoroughgoing exploration of the manuscripts and archives,” whilst it expands considerably on other original chapters, such as those relating to the Confederacy. Still other portions have been entirely recast or rewritten, such as the pre-war period chapters and Reconstruction chapters, reflecting factual updates since Randall’s original publication. A must-read for all Civil War students and scholars.
