COMMON PLEAS, A Tale of Whoa!" is a legal thriller novel colored with humor set in rural North Carolina in the mid-1980's. If John Grisham, Harper Lee, and Larry the Cable Guy were penned for a weekend in a cabin with nothing a typewriter and an ample supply of bourbon, wine, and Pabst Blue Ribbon beer, something like this might result. Read as the Good, the Bad, and the Butt Ugly collide in this riotous journey to a rural North Carolina courtroom, ending in a verdict of local justice. Veteran trial attorney Bob Lee Pender battles his courtroom adversary, the facts, and even his own client through the winding journey of a rowdy, fast-paced, suspenseful high-profile murder trial made possible by the collective contributions of a sordid and colorful cast only a local courthouse could produce. This is an intense and informative tale of the mechanics and realities of courtroom justice, whether Southern or elsewhere--a tale of "Whoa!
For six decades, Pittsburgh-based forensic scientist Cyril Wecht has been an outspoken authority when horrible things happen to everyday people--murders, childhood deaths, tragic accidents and police brutality. His expertise and testimony have been called upon in high-profile cases, including the deaths of John F. Kennedy, Robert F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, Jr., Elvis Presley, JonBenet Ramsey, Laci Peterson and others. As a criminal defendant, in 1979, he was acquitted on charges of personally profiting from his office as Allegheny County Coroner; a federal public corruption charge was dismissed in 2008. Both cases, his attorneys argued, were politically motivated. Wecht's memoir describes his work on famous cases, his life in the public eye and his legal battles with determined and powerful authorities, from his hometown DA to a U.S. Attorney and the FBI.

This book is about scientific theories of a particular kind - theories of mathematical physics. Examples of such theories are classical and relativis tic particle mechanics, classical electrodynamics, classical thermodynamics, statistical mechanics, hydrodynamics, and quantum mechanics. Roughly, these are theories in which a certain mathematical structure is employed to make statements about some fragment of the world. Most of the book is simply an elaboration of this rough characterization of theories of mathematical physics. It is argued that each theory of mathematical physics has associated with it a certain characteristic mathematical struc ture. This structure may be used in a variety of ways to make empirical claims about putative applications of the theory. Typically - though not necessarily - the way this structure is used in making such claims requires that certain elements in the structure play essentially different roles. Some playa "theoretical" role; others playa "non-theoretical" role. For example, in classical particle mechanics, mass and force playa theoretical role while position plays a non-theoretical role. Some attention is given to showing how this distinction can be drawn and describing precisely the way in which the theoretical and non-theoretical elements function in the claims of the theory. An attempt is made to say, rather precisely, what a theory of mathematical physics is and how you tell one such theory from anothe- what the identity conditions for these theories are.
The Doc and Raider series of Westerns followed the adventures of two Pinkerton agents -- Raider, a kind of "Arkansas good old boy" and Doc, a rather well-to-do doctor from the East. There were a total of over 70 novels in the series, produced throughout the mid to late 80's. The books were first published by Playboy Books, then Berkeley Books produced most of the titles in the series
The threat of deteriorating habitats and a loss of biodiversity make this reference work on the freshwater fishes of British Columbia more necessary than ever before. Eighty-one comprehensive species accounts aid accurate identification and consist of an illustration, the scientific and common names of the fish, its distinguishing characteristics, taxonomic comments, geographic distribution, a life-history summary, a habitat-use summary, and conservation comments. The book is a critical resource for biologists, naturalists, management and conservation officers, anglers, and members of the public who are concerned about our natural heritage. Foreword by Joseph S. Nelson.
