Solutions are discussed first, surfaces and double layers second, electrode kinetics third, and then the applied subjects. The introduction of spectroscopic methods to electrochemistry is well exemplified by NMR studies of ionic solutions, as represented here in the detailed article by E. von Goldammer. Correspondingly, the spectroscopic approach can be applied to surfaces, and B. G. Baker has written an introduction to this topic for electrochemists from the point of view of gas phase measurements. One of the topics which begins to reach a degree of sophistica tion in electrode process chemistry is the adsorption of organic species on electrodes, and this topic is described in our volume by the well-known electrochemist M. W. Breiter. The work has much rele vance to the corresponding electrode kinetics and oxidation of organic materials. Much less sophisticated is the position in the electrochemistry of sulfide minerals, but it has seemed worthwhile to have the present record described by D. F. A. Koch; his chapter demonstrates the value of qualitative electrochemical studies in this field. The Hydrogen Economy is perhaps an example of straw fire in electrochemistry, for its great popularity beginning in 1973 reflects an interest which can hardly grow larger. However, much discussion of the Hydrogen Economy is concerned with its nonelectrochemical v vi Preface aspects and D. P. This study was produced under an FAO-EBRD Cooperation project on reviewing the development potential of the tea sectors of Azerbaijan and Georgia. As a result of the joint research in the two countries carried out as part of the project, a similar separate review of the Georgian tea sector was also published under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme. Tea has a long tradition of cultivation in Azerbaijan and Georgia, dating back to the nineteenth century. The structural changes that followed the collapse of the Soviet Union in the early 1990s led to a dramatic decline of the two countries’ tea sectors. However, interest in tea production in Georgia and Azerbaijan has increased in recent years and, in an effort to revive their once thriving tea sectors, governments have adopted sector development programmes that provide for support to primary tea production. In spite of the long tradition and accumulated know-how of tea production and processing, there is little doubt that investments in both technology and knowledge will be required for the Azerbaijani and Georgian tea sectors to grow in a successful and sustainable way. Production focused on efficiency and quality and mindful of shifts in consumer preferences on global markets, but also of potential environmental risks, will be critical in achieving this goal. This publication is part of the Country Investment Highlights series under the FAO Investment Centre's Knowledge for Investment (K4I) programme.

Single trees may become important refuges for people during floods.Key messages include:• Responses require planning and training to enable efficient response also in the absence of key personnel.• Information about the location of critical resources is important, e.g. key staff, forestry equipment, access routes, and timber storage sites.• It is impossible for many small countries to be resilient on their own. Development of regional response capacity is desirable, e.g. pools of qualified operators, equipment resources, and training.• Salvage timber is a resource and an economic asset. Planning on the use of forest resources after disasters is rarely undertaken, and policies or regulations covering this type of use are often missing.• Salvaging timber is dangerous and requires training.

From July 31 to August 13 a NATO Advanced Study Institute on Photosynthesis was held at the Anargyrios and Korgialenios School on the Island of Spetsai. Greece. The Institute focused on techniques and recent advances in photosynthesis research and brought together teachers and students with a wide range of interest and experience. It was a very stimulating occasion which allowed cross-fertilization to occur between biophysicists. biochemists, molecular biologists and physiologists. Lectures and discussions ran~ed from the description of the molecular structure of the photosynthetIc bacterial reaction centre and of tobacco Rubisco through to the regulation of carbon metabolism and the application of genetic engeering. This book is comprised of the contents of the major lectures and a selection of relevant posters displayed at the Institute. Taken together the book is an excellent representation of the most up to date thoughts and activities in photosynthesis research across a wide, but interlocking. spectrum of topics. The papers presented here are a written record of the high quality of both the lecturers and students alike and emphasises the value of the NATO ASI series as a reference source. The successful organisation of the Institute and the production of this book would not have been possible without the support of our colleagues. We therefore wish to thank Pam Cook, Lyn Barber.
