The Hebron Cross An African American’s Family Life During Twentieth Century Marlboro County, South Carolina: Book One By: Dr. Mary J. Ferguson Dr. Mary J. Ferguson, is a Marlboro County (Hebron), South Carolina native and one of fifteen siblings. She is also a 42 year teacher and administrator veteran of public, private and higher education in various states and countries due to decades of military affiliation. She enjoys the study of integrated cultural studies. Her initial training prepared her for self-contained classroom teaching. Her educational journey includes: Winston Salem State University B.S. (’78), St. Mary College, (KS) M.Ed. (’96), Fayetteville State University, (NC) M.S.A. (’05) and Ed. D. (’09). Her quantitative dissertation can be found on proquest entitled: A Comparative Analysis of Rural and Urban Students in Selected North Carolina Schools (2009). Her book publications include: Just Thinking; A Bio-Compilation of Poetry 2010; 2014); Twenty-First Century College Commentaries of Traditional and Nontraditional College Students (2013); STEM and Cyber Culture (2017). Her current primary academic interest includes: research on humanities and STEM for elementary and secondary students, community and parent involvement, policy improvement for public schools. She is the owner of a non-profit founded in 2014 (Ferguson Educational and Consultant Services). At the age of twelve, she became a believer in Jesus Christ and baptized in Aberdeen, NC, by her father, the late Reverend T. J. Johnson. About the Forword Corrie J. Davis-Jackson, M.S.A., (Steve), is the sister to Mary and one of fifteen siblings in which seven have preceded them (four at birth). She too is a Marlboro County (Hebron), South Carolina native. Her degreed educational experience includes: Longwood University, VA M.S.A. (’90); St. Paul’s College, VA B.A. (’71) and Clinton Junior College, SC AAD (’66). She is member of several professional organizations, teacher and administrator retiree of the Prince Edward County Public School System, VA (37 years) and presently owns the Davis Driving School founded by her and her late husband (Rev. Albert Davis, M.S.A.), also a teacher and principal administrator retiree of Prince Edward County Schools (VA). Mrs. Davis-Jackson is extremely active in her church (First Baptist) and Farmville, VA community. At the age of twelve, she became a believer in Jesus Christ and baptized by the family’s minister (the late Rev. G.W. Ware), then pastor of St. Matthew Missionary Baptist Church in Hebron, South Carolina.

Samuel Wilson was born on November 10, 1930, in rural Wake County, North Carolina to a couple who wanted a son to grace their family of five daughters. The Wilson family had little, but Samuel grew up in a loving household with sisters who doted on him. Samuel spoke of dreams he had to enrich his life. He dreamt of going to college. On or about the age of thirteen when he was baptized at the Fayetteville Street Baptist Church, Samuel dreamt of becoming a Baptist minister. When introduced to baseball, he dreamt of one day playing for the major leagues, cognizant that during his era Samuel could only hope to play in the Negro league. Samuel dreamt of serving his country during World War II but was too young at the time. Once in the military, he dreamt of becoming an officer in the United States Army, but decided to leave Europe to return home. As a teenager, Samuel was gifted with an old-fashioned Polaroid camera. He was thrilled and began to explore his world through the camera lens. After retirement from his driving career, Samuel realized his dream of attending college and becoming a professional photographer. After his death, I found old Polaroid prints of his family and friends. I believe what makes Samuel's photography career so remarkable is that glaucoma gradually stole the vision in his right eye. His depth of field was adversely affected but he devised methods to mark the F-stops, measure, and memorize distances in order to get the desired photographic results. Samuel never gave up. He never complained, but instead took his life in stride, always looking forward to the next adventure. Samuel pushed through disappointments and frustrations, as well as his deteriorating vision, achy knees, and back pain to climb hills and rocks, and wade through water, mud, and reeds for that perfect shot. He had an indomitable spirit that shone through even toward the end of his life when he began to feel unwell. Samuel never considered publishing, but he certainly developed and framed beautiful prints which adorn our home. He seemed happiest when taking photographs, and as his wife and partner of thirty-three years, I grew to appreciate his talent and now treasure all the beautiful work he left. ""Carolyn J. Bragg, NC), Webster University (Ft. Bragg, NC), Fayetteville Technical Community College (NC), Carolina Bible College (NC) and Miller-Motte (NC). Pearls of Wisdom The book Pearls of Wisdom came about because of the dream I had of starting a Bible Study in the little country church my husband Dennis and I pastor in Nebraska, Indiana. Each week I would come up with the pearl and ask the Holy Spirit what He wanted me to tell the people. I wanted something that they could reflect on for the entire week. My sole intention was to keep them uplifted and edified. I wanted to gently guide and direct them the way they should go. The book is to be a practical application to lifes battles and challenges. It was to encourage them and make them understand they were not alone but God was there all the way with them. And though they may have fallen into sin and temptation, if they repented then His love was unconditional. I wanted them to know they were not the only ones going through the challenges life brought about, but how they handled those difficulties made the world of difference. The book is a collection of what I shared with our Bible Study. Now instead of just sharing with a handful of people, I desire to touch the lives of all those who will receive them. Despite the great strides made for social justice during the civil rights movement in the 1960s some of the most jarring national events of the early twenty-first century have been symptomatic of a deep-seated racial strife in America. The killing of nine African American church members in Charleston, South Carolina and the shooting of Michael Brown in Ferguson Missouri, and the killing of unarmed black males in Chicago and other cities, along with the slaying of law enforcement officers in Dallas and Baton Rouge seem to suggest that major institutions such as the family, the church, the media, the criminal justice system and the public schools need to constantly address the problem of racism until there are positive ongoing changes. After Charleston and Ferguson -Where Do We Go from Here? Presents over twenty reasons why racial strife exists; along with a host of strategies to overcome racial and cultural challenges in a post-Charleston and Ferguson era. A detailed civil rights and a black history timeline is discussed as information for those who desire to learn about Americas racial and cultural past. The author also makes a passionate appeal for an Annual Brotherhood and Race Conciliation holiday where workers are given a day off to honor the importance of love and brotherhood among those of different races, colors and creeds; it is believed that more credence will be given to a National Brotherhood holiday where no persons name is mentioned in connection with the day.
This book has been a work in progress. In the spring of 2000 I started this project and began to collect data and conduct interviews. I copied every article I could find in the Journal of Visual Impairment and Blindness and its predecessors Outlook for the Blind and New Outlook for the Blind. I was fortunate to locate Blindness the annual publication of the American Association of Workers for the Blind. One of the greatest finds was the library at the American Foundation for the Blind. The library contains dozens of volumes related to orientation and mobility. Within two years I had amassed a considerable collection of resources. I began working through the materials and along the way prepared some papers for various conferences. A dramatic increase in administrative responsibilities, as well as the tyranny of meeting grant deadlines, diverted me from giving concentrated effort to this book. All that changed as I reduced my workload in order to devote almost all my efforts over the past nine months to this project.
