Soviet Influences on Postwar Yugoslav Gender Policies

This book explores Soviet influences on Yugoslav gender policies, examining how Yugoslav communists interpreted, adapted and used Soviet ideas to change Yugoslav society. The book sheds new light on the role of Soviet models in producing Yugoslav family and reproductive laws, and in framing the understandings of gender which affected key policies such as the collectivisation of agriculture, labour policies, policies towards Muslim populations, and policies concerning youth sexuality. Through a gender analysis of all these policies, this book points to the difficulties of applying Soviet solutions in Yugoslavia. Deeply entrenched patriarchal attitudes undermined Yugoslav communists’ ability to challenge gender norms, causing many disputes and struggles within the Communist Party over the meanings and application of Soviet gender models. Yet, Soviet models informed how Yugoslav communists approached gender-related issues for many years, even after the conflict erupted between these two countries.

The first part of the book deals with the stability of money as the value equivalent of produced goods in an economic space. The second part discusses economics of entrepreneurship, and the third covers the application of entrepreneurship to a concrete state. The stability of money and entrepreneurship are vitally important in economics. As in living things, money can be considered as blood, while entrepreneurship is the heart that drives the blood through the body, thus enabling it to live. The first part of the book covers ten domains. The first three domains make it possible for money to have stability. These include the balances of production and consumption, revenues and expenditures of state budgets, and import and export. These are followed by seven domains that make it indirectly possible for money to be stable. These include rationality in spending natural resources; balance in the structure of habitants; optimality in the state economy; economic discipline; creation of development; and good conclusions. The second part lists five domains directing and limiting entrepreneurship, which may offer success. Four domains follow that help the functions of entrepreneurship be stronger, and are followed by four domains concerning entrepreneurs. The third part deals with the application of the conceptual economic statements from the first and second parts to a concrete state that shows possible economic benefits.

A postwar Serbian poet captures the spirit of the classical in his newly translated book of poems. Ivan V. Lalic is one of the most important Serbian poets of the postwar generation. In Roll Call of Mirrors the translator Charles Simic, a native Yugoslavian, captures these poems in Lalic's own idiom, He retains their spare beauty, from the lyrical intensity of the early poems – by a poet "destined to burn" – to his later love of sonnets, to his most recent =, more meditative work on "what geometry dreams," and on the art of the poet (standing "before the mirror, fearless/ Of the returning image"). Although Lalic is part of a generation of Yugoslavian poets considered modernist, the spirit of his poetry is classical, calling up Roman triumphal arches, Orpheus descending into Hades, Lazarus rising from the tomb, and Byzantine warriors with their breastplates of bronze. Byzantium is, for Lalic, both the historical city, spiritual and also the mythical home from which we all have been exiled. According to Simic, in Lalic's poetry "the historical and the mythical are in dialogue." Like the icon or the fresco, his poems begin with metaphors that, through meditation, reflect and give meaning to identity.
