This is not a book of history; it does not claim to cover every aspect of Islam religion. It confines itself to the search for the true mission of Islam and how that mission has been hijacked in the struggle of faith and power. This is the story of contest between religion and politics where politics was made a sacrament and religion abused. In describing this aspect, the historical part naturally cannot be ignored. This is not a book of religion either. Since religionand politics overlap each other in this study, theology and jurisprudence have their interplay also. The conflict within Islam for the soul of Islam continues. Will the struggle be resolved in the present and the foreseeable future? Or will it make life more difficult for the faithful? This book attempts to find the answers.
This book tells the story ofuneasyrelations the Western Christendom had or having with the Eastern Islamic and Jewish world. It covers a huge sweep of both time and place, begins in the seventh century and extends into the twenty-first. Its boundaries are Morocco and Algeria to the south, and Vienna to the north, the Atlantic to the west, and the Arabian Sea and the Indian Ocean to the east. We can read them and see how they made an impact on the human imagination. The deep cause of their hostility seemed hidden beneath the religious or cultural explanations, underlying political and economic rivalries, hatred and animosities, personal ambitions and vanities, chance and accident. Inter-faith understanding for peaceful coexistence is a minimal need of our time. It is not the same thing as love or friendship. To the contrary, it is an expression of distance, an acknowledgmentof boundaries that will remain. It is informed by an attitude of "live and let live". Coexistence is an ideal without illusions. In a pluralistic society, ethnic and cultural differences are not abolished. They are legitimized, and society strives to guarantee that the law will be blind to them. We are increasingly confronted by people and groups whose worldviews are utterly different from ours, and these people are our neighbors, co-workers, and schoolmates of our children, our in-laws, our clients, our employers and more. In todays world of global connectedness, we must develop the capacity to dialogue and create relatedness with people vastly different from us. We do not need to be the same, but we should find just enough similarity between us that we can hold hands as fellow travelers in this life, all the while mindful of our differences in myriad ways.
How to resist the evil temptations of the life of America when one has full right of freedom, opportunity, privacy and resources? Our family is in great agony since our college going daughter, age 19, asked our permission to marry her classmate, a non-Muslim youth. We are Muslim migrants, but our two sons and one daughter are all born and brought up in the USA. We are at loss to decide. Please help. Our eldest son, a teen of 18, has fallen in bad company of his high-schoolmates, who are addicted to drugs, shoplifting, and things like that, which we have little knowledge. We took all possible steps to make him understand without any success. We have one girl, 5 years younger. We are worried for her. Please show us a way out of this crisis. Such are the questions Muslims families in the USA are facing. Most of these families, though settled for decades, are bewildered, confused and at loss to understand the course of action they should follow. The crux of their issue is how to Islamize, at least moralize on ethical lines, the practical living problems of their families and youths in this land without losing their Muslim identity. In today’s complex and volatile world the consequences of relying on fraudulent and counterfeit Hadith to legitimize extremist behavior, issue violent fatwas, and justify blatant abuse, particularly of women, is not only far too easy but in fact dangerous. Israr Khan addresses the sensitive topic of Hadith authentication, focusing on the criteria adopted by classical scholars to maintain that concentration on the continuity and accuracy of the chain of narrators, rather than the textual content of Hadith, has led to particular Hadith being included which either contradict other Hadith directly, project the Prophet (SAAS) in an uncharacteristic light, or do not reflect and/or conflict with the teachings of the Qur’an. The study traces in careful detail the historical development of the oral and written traditions, as well as the many targeted attempts at fabrication that took place, critiquing in methodical detail certain Hadith which have come to be widely accepted as “authentic.” The prominent collections we have today, were made possible by the development of the science of Hadith criticism, and Muslim scholars deserve deep appreciation for their painstaking work, as well as their invaluable contribution towards preserving the Hadith literature to the best of their ability. However, insists the author, the process is ongoing, and the closed door policy which currently surrounds Hadith authentication needs to be carefully reexamined.
