Forlorn and spiritually bankrupt, tender or abject—the subjects in the figurative paintings of Sanya Kantarovsky (b. 1982) convey an uneasy, dark humor. They seem trapped in a precarious inner monologue, or under the spell of mundane lived experience. A Solid House, developed in conjunction with Kantarovsky’s exhibition A Solid House at the Aspen Art Museum, includes more than 200 full-color image plates and spans the artist’s oeuvre, focusing on his most recent output following his previous monograph, No Joke (2014). The publication also includes a conversation between Kantarovsky and art historian Isabelle Graw, as well as essays by the psychoanalyst and writer Jamieson Webster and art historian George Baker.
Different international relations theorists have studied political change, but all fall short of sufficiently integrating human reactions, feelings, and responses to change in their theories. This book adds a social psychological component to the analysis of why nations, politically organized groups, or states enter into armed conflict. The Disequilibrium, Polarization, and Crisis Model is introduced, which draws from prospect theory, realism, liberalism, and constructivism. The theory considers how humans react and respond to change in their social, political, and economic environment. Three case studies, the U.S. Civil War, the Yugoslav Wars (1991-1995), and the First World War are applied to illustrate the model’s six process stages: status quo, change creating shifts that lead to disequilibrium, realization of loss, hanging on to the old status quo, emergence of a rigid system, and risky decisions leading to violence and war.

This publication documents a multimedia installation by Berlin- and New York-based artist Donna Huanca (born 1980) at the Belvedere Museum in Vienna. Sculptures, large-format painting, video, soundscapes and nude models, whose bodies are transformed by paint and textiles, create parallels to the museum's simultaneous exhibition of Egon Schiele's paintings.
