Isabel, Lady Burton (1831-96) was a writer and the wife and partner of explorer, adventurer and writer Sir Richard Burton (1821-90). Her two-volume biography of her husband was first published in 1893. Volume I (of 2), including numerous porrtraits, illustrations and maps.

Isabel Burton had intended that as many people as possible should read her book, but, the original version having been written in two volumes, proved too expensive for the majority of people. This edition adheres to the original text, leaving out as little as possible. . An important source of Burton's thoughts, this book also reveals the values and perceptions of Isabel herself. In reading it, one may presume her correct in stating that while others would lay down what he "wrote and said", she in turn would be the only one who could write down what he "thought and did.
