International Occupational Safety and Health Information Centre's Books

This reference book provides a core list of publications in the labour field covering both reference materials and selected ILO publications in English. It covers employment training, labour relations, labour administration, working conditions and environment, social security, promotion of equality and workers' education.

The international exchange of information on occupational safety and health questions is becoming increasingly important, to give governments, industry, employers' and workers' organizations, scientific institutions and others concerned with this field easier access to information on occupational safety and health practices in other countries.

Improving maternal health and reducing child mortality are among the eight UN Millennium Development Goals. This publication contains guidance on maternity protection in the workplace, focusing on measures that can be taken to establish a decent workplace and to identify workplace risks. The starting point is the Maternity Protection Convention (No. 183), adopted by the International Labour Conference in 2000 and its accompanying Recommendation (No. 191). The guide is intended for general use as a reference tool for employers, workers, trade union leaders, occupation health and safety advisors, labour inspectors and others involved in workplace health and maternity protection.

This non-technical manual, written in clear language, provides guidance on: health hazards resulting from chemical exposure at work; chemical fire and explosion hazards; basic principles of prevention; chemical emergency procedures; management of a chemical control programme.

This new code of practice provides workers, employers and governments with practical safety and health guidelines for non-ferrous metal production - aluminium, copper, lead, manganese and zinc. If focuses on the general principles of prevention and protection, including risk assessment and management, training, and workplace and health surveillance. It identifies and examines a range of physical hazards commonly encountered in the production of non-ferrous metals such as noise, vibration, heat stress, radiation, confined spaces, dust and chemicals. In-depth sections also discuss health and safety measures for working with furnaces, molten metal, alloys and the process of recycling.

This study provides a background to the ILO's history, and highlights its work in its promoting social justice worldwide. A historical sketch traces the origins of the ILO and the lasting contribution it has made to social progress since its creation in 1919.; Topics covered include: a detailed outline of the ILO's structure, its work to create international labour standards and its major activities in the promotion of employment and human resource development; improvement of working conditions and environment; strengthening of social institutions; and building a firm foundation for the ILO's.

The information in the guide will be of value to those directly engaged in the handling and use of agrochemicals. Emphasis is on safe handling and use, and on practical measures to be taken to avoid undue consequences.

The practical recommendations in this publication reflect the changes that have taken place in the iron and steel industry over the last 20 years or so, and changes to the ILO's approach to developing codes of practice. A leaner, flexible, more highly skilled workforce, new technology and a less prescriptive, more systems-oriented approach to addressing safety and health are reflected in the revised Code. It is intended to provide guidance to ILO constituents and all those responsible for addressing safety and health throughout the iron and steel industry. The general provisions of the Code cover: general responsibilities, duties and rights; the legal framework; safety and health management; reporting, recording and notification of work-related injuries and diseases, ill health and incidents and health services. Guidance on industry-specific prevention and protection includes: furnaces and ovens, foundries; handling molten material; rolling mills and coating lines; and recycling. There are also sections on: competence and training; personal protection; emergency preparedness; and welfare. Annexes to the Code include: workers' health surveillance; surveillance of the working environment; occupational exposure limits; and chemicals used in the iron and steel industry. This code replaces an earlier code that was adopted in 1981.

Reviews trends and developments in the clothing industry since the Third Technical Meeting in 1987. Summarizes the information supplied by governments on the effect given to conclusions and resolutions adopted by the previous meeting, and includes steps taken by the ILO to meet the requirements of previous meetings.

Concern to protect working women in connection with pregnancy and childbirth appeared when women first entered factory employment, and was reflected in the provision of maternity leave in some countries. Over time, maternity protection evolved to include measures to protect the pregnant woman's health, so that work does not harm the development of the foetus.
