In 1987, the two Institutes brought together a number of persons with considerable experience in agricultural policy from 20 countries representing both importers and exporters. They participated in 4 meetings and approved the consensus policy statement published here with the background papers developed for the meetings. These background studies include suggestions for reforming government policies worldwide; a North American and European Community approach to decoupling the policy decisions that affect production from those that are pursued on social or environmental grounds; agriculture in GATT negotiations and developing countries; and exchange rates and their role in agricultural trade issues.

A joint conference was held in Washington in January, 1988, to assess the major features of the agreement. This volume includes the papers prepared for that conference, and the remarks of discussants on each paper. Includes a US and Canadian perspective, dispute resolution mechanisms, the auto sector, implications of the energy provisions, services and investment, implications for the Uruguay round, and the political perspectives from a Canadian government minister and a US administration representative.

The twenty contributions in this book, by academics, former government officials, and businessmen address issues in the world trading system.

Examines the implications of global imbalances for bilateral relations due toa perceived widespread beliefthat policy challenges arising from global tradeand current account imbalances and the longer-term consequences of the risinginternational liabilities of the US economy have important consequences forthe interdependent economics. The report focuses on attitudes towards USpolicy response to its own trade deficits and puts it in context of pastworld trade liberalization and then discusses diagnoses and prescriptionsfrom mainstream economists, supply-side, and industrial policy school views. Solutions considered include depreciating the US dollar, macroeconomic policy, trade policy and industrial policy possibilities.

Perhaps the most popular of all Institute products, selected Working Papers are now available for the first time in a print format. These papers contain the preliminary results of ongoing Institute research. The book is divided into four sections: Trade and the Global Economy, Outsourcing, Asia, and the Middle East. Included in the book are papers by Edwin M. Truman, Morris Goldstein, Gary Clyde Hufbauer, Nicholas R. Lardy, Catherine L. Mann, and Marcus Noland. Volume I contains papers from 2005. Future volumes will be published on a semi-regular schedule as material is available.
