This volume provides insights into the various issues pertaining to measurement, incidence and dimensions of poverty in India. It analyses various growth theories of spatial planning which have been propounded by various authors from time to time. There is a detailed study of the functioning of various poverty alleviation programmes in India and why they have not accomplished their objectives. An innovative attempt has been made to eliminate poverty by integrating grassroot planning and growth pole strategy. It also emphasizes that if the government, people and civil society work harmoniously, the ultimate goal of empowerment of the voiceless, rootless and powerless people of our country can be achieved.
Nanoparticles have immense commercial importance. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticle from diverse groups of organisms is of great interest since the methodology is simple and hazard-free. The obtained nanoparticles are free from toxic residues and are bio-compatible. The book offers an overview of various aspects of biological synthesis of the inorganic nanoparticles-gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper oxide, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and carbon nanostructures by different biological systems and their suitability for application in various fields especially in biomedicine and environmental protection. The diversity of biomolecules in these bioresources can facilitate biomanufacturing of nanoparticles of suitable size and geometry by regulating reaction parameters. The book also offers an insight into the use of callus cultures which are renewable bio-resources for the axenic synthesis of nanoparticles suitable for therapeutic applications. In several studies the biogenic nanoparticles have been found to be superior to nanoparticles synthesized by conventional methods. Hence studies on the current status of biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles and their applications will facilitate future research to achieve biomanufacturing of nanoparticles for various beneficial uses. It is suitable as a reference book for researchers. It is useful as a textbook for post-graduate and undergraduate students. Each chapter has several questions to stimulate the interest of students. There are also simple laboratory protocols for biogenic synthesis.
National income statistics, which form the basis for measuring and monitoring the performance of an economy, do not include environmental resources adequately, with the result that they fail to provide the required inputs for the formulation of sound economic policies particularly in the context of sustainable development Coastal resources are important in a country like India, which is surrounded by sea from three sides, and mangroves, the salt tolerant forest ecosystem that is one of the richest ecosystems in the world, provides a wide range of ecological and economic products and services including carbon sequestration and protection to life and property under severe cyclones and tsunamis. However, mangroves are neglected as their value is not incorporated in the national income data. The present study, which is a methodological study, compiles economic value of mangroves in India and shows that this rich ecosystem contributes significantly to the economy, and it needs to be strengthened in order to promote sustainable development of coastal regions and to protect coastal population from cyclones and tsunamis. FROM THE EDITOR'S DESK: WHY NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS MATTER MORE TODAY THAN YESTERYEAR - Have a list of wishes for yourself, and turn them into action. Piles of research show that just dreaming about what you'd like to do, including making resolutions and setting goals, actually reduces the odds that you'll achieve them. When done correctly, setting goals and making resolutions can shape our behavior for the better; THE STORY OF A FAMINE THAT KILLED TEN MILLION INDIANS, AND BRITAIN'S GRIP ON THE NEW WORLD - The story of how India helped shape America's destiny. A story that started with tea and ended with Hyder Ali.
The Alang-Sosiya Shipbreaking industry is an important source of employment generation and has the potential of producing economic benefits in terms of mild steel and other reusable equipment, furniture, cutlery, etc. However there is a significant human and labour cost associated with this industry which has emerged as a more sinister form of garbage imperialism for the third world. Most of the heavy shipbreaking in the world takes place on the yards of developing nations such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan as the economic values dominate the market in these countries. This volume offers valuable insights into the occupational and environmental health hazards faced by marginalized migrant labour working on the yards of Alang-Sosiya. It also paints a picture of the administrative and legislative loopholes regarding transboundary trade of wastes which has led to transition economies being treated as pollution heavens by the industrialised countries of the world. The study endeavours to draw the attention of national and international organisations as well as civil societies towards the perilous nature of the shipbreaking industry in India and hence emphasises the need for policy reforms to pave way for a sustainable ship recycling process especially in the third world.
