The Alang-Sosiya Shipbreaking industry is an important source of employment generation and has the potential of producing economic benefits in terms of mild steel and other reusable equipment, furniture, cutlery, etc. However there is a significant human and labour cost associated with this industry which has emerged as a more sinister form of garbage imperialism for the third world. Most of the heavy shipbreaking in the world takes place on the yards of developing nations such as India, Bangladesh and Pakistan as the economic values dominate the market in these countries. This volume offers valuable insights into the occupational and environmental health hazards faced by marginalized migrant labour working on the yards of Alang-Sosiya. It also paints a picture of the administrative and legislative loopholes regarding transboundary trade of wastes which has led to transition economies being treated as pollution heavens by the industrialised countries of the world. The study endeavours to draw the attention of national and international organisations as well as civil societies towards the perilous nature of the shipbreaking industry in India and hence emphasises the need for policy reforms to pave way for a sustainable ship recycling process especially in the third world.

The effectiveness of tribal development projects in both the states have been analysed on several parameters including Work Participation Rate, literacy, housing and access to portable water, incidence of diseases and nature of employment, etc. It is commendable that Gujarat has fared better in terms of tribal development as a result of constant efforts of the state as well as central government policies. On the other hand Andhra Pradesh still lags far behind in the race. With the active participation of government, people and civil societies we dream of a new dawn for tribal people where they can march from Gloom to Glory with dignity.

Nanoparticles have immense commercial importance. Biogenic synthesis of nanoparticle from diverse groups of organisms is of great interest since the methodology is simple and hazard-free. The obtained nanoparticles are free from toxic residues and are bio-compatible. The book offers an overview of various aspects of biological synthesis of the inorganic nanoparticles-gold, silver, platinum, palladium, copper oxide, titanium dioxide nanoparticles, and carbon nanostructures by different biological systems and their suitability for application in various fields especially in biomedicine and environmental protection. The diversity of biomolecules in these bioresources can facilitate biomanufacturing of nanoparticles of suitable size and geometry by regulating reaction parameters. The book also offers an insight into the use of callus cultures which are renewable bio-resources for the axenic synthesis of nanoparticles suitable for therapeutic applications. In several studies the biogenic nanoparticles have been found to be superior to nanoparticles synthesized by conventional methods. Hence studies on the current status of biogenic synthesis of nanoparticles and their applications will facilitate future research to achieve biomanufacturing of nanoparticles for various beneficial uses.
