This book is a collection of experiences of Hindustani soldiers during the World War II. What they told was recorded in their own words. It is a stirring saga of sacrifice and their spirited will to survive even on a ration of biscuits on battlefields. Besides forming a significant section of manpower in W.W. II, they depict a fascinating historic account of the people of the countries they visited and the troops of the enemy they fought with. They give details and descriptions which have perhaps never figured in any book on Military History. These stories come from soldiers, majority of who were illiterate village boys. Above all it depicts the life in the British period and the administration in those days. The narrations are a slice of British Indian history.
This volume highlights the role of Hindustani soldiers, collectively and individually in WW II. It was the inexhaustible presence of Hindustani troops that proved decisive in key engagements of WW II which shaped history. The returning soldiers gave firsthand accounts of unheard countries, their people, about vast expanse of sea, dessert and battles raging simultaneously over large area with tanks, artillery and never ending order to defend or to attack. It was an unusual sight for Hindustanis to see White man fight White man. In Hindustan it was taboo to raise hand against a White man but here the White man (British) ordered Hindustanis to destroy White men (German and Italians), who had no enmity with Hindustan. The narrations recall the separation, sorrow and destruction of WW II. This book examines the idea of the self in Anglophone literatures from British colonies in Africa and the subcontinent, and in the context of intercultural encounter, literary hybridity and globalization. The project examines texts by eight authors across the colonial, postwar and post-9/11 eras – Olaudah Equiano, Sake Dean Mahomet, Henry Callaway, R.C. Temple, Amos Tutuola, G.V. Desani, Tsitsi Dangarembga and Aravind Adiga – in order to map different strategies of selfhood across four fields of literature: autobiographical life writing, folk anthology, postwar fabulism, and contemporary realism. Drawing on historical analysis, psychological inquiry, comparative linguistics, postcolonial criticism and social theory, this book responds to a renewed emphasis on the narrative strategies and creative choices involved in a literary construction of the self.
