The Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat has produced four Technical Guides to date, since the series launched in late 2012. Each of these guides is the product of a CTBUH Working Group—committees formed specifically to address focused topical subjects in the industry. The intention of each guide is the same—to provide working knowledge to the typical building owner or professional who wants a better understanding of available options for improving tall buildings, and what affects their design. The object of the series is to provide a tool-kit for the creation of better-performing tall buildings, and to spread the understanding of the considerations that need to be made in designing tall. This technical guide offers an extensive overview of the use of vertical vegetation in high-rise buildings, an indepth analysis of green walls, definitions and typology, including standards, policies and incentives. It features comprehensive case studies, along with architectural theories of the public and private benefits of green walls. The book delves into architect-design considerations and limitations, the effects of green walls on energy efficiencies and includes recommendations and future research.

Frank O Gehry, one of the most influential architects of his generation, is famous for many iconic buildings. Works to date include the Dancing Building, Prague, Czech Republic (1996); the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, Spain (1997) and, in the United States, the Weatherhead School of Management, Ohio (2002), the Walt Disney Concert Hall, Los Angeles (2003), and the Peter B. Lewis Library at Princeton University (2008). The distinctive nature of Gehry’s design for his first building in Australia, the Dr Chau Chak Wing Building at the University of Technology Sydney, is showcased in this richly illustrated monograph. The design is unlike anything Gehry has previously constructed. In creating the building skin Gehry designed an undulating and corbelled brick veneer for the eastern façade facing the city, which was laid entirely by hand, while for the western façade he created a chevron pattern in large sheets of glass. The book provides a fresh analysis of Gehry’s working process and offers insightful perspectives on the context, negotiation, commission, design and construction of the building. It is illuminated by many of the Gehry Partners’ models for the building and rich photographic essays, as well as the architect’s unique sketches.

Known as the Gateway to the San Gabriel Valley, the land that would eventually become Alhambra was bought by pioneer Benjamin D. Wilson after he decided to abandon a trip to China in 1841. In 1873, the Southern Pacific Railroad built a line directly through the area and brought with it many settlers, ushering in the "Boom of the 1880s." The community struggled through the 1890s as the boom went bust, but the residents looked ahead to the 20th century with great optimism. Their enthusiasm paid off on July 11, 1903, when Alhambra was incorporated as a city. In 1915, the city became one of the first chartered cities in Southern California. Throughout the 20th century, the city of Alhambra grew by leaps and bounds, and such expansion continues to this day.
