Baggage has gotten a bad rap. We think it's all bad. We think it makes us less likely to have good, healthy relationships today. But baggage isn't just the bad stuff that happened to us in the past. It's the lessons we've taken from the pain we carry. It's how what we've been through has actually made us stronger and more capable than we imagine. And it's how we're going to make our current relationships work. Far from minimizing past pain, pastor Ike Miller shows you how to go through the baggage you carry from a difficult childhood and pull out the good stuff. The intentionality you've developed. The empathy you've gained. The trust you value so highly. Miller shares from his own past in a dysfunctional family impacted by alcoholism and divorce, and his present as part of a healthy and loving family, to illustrate how to stop letting your past sabotage your present. You'll find no platitudes or pat answers here. Rather, you'll discover untapped riches of experience and knowledge you already have that can make your relationships thrive and change the course of your life and legacy.
How can we understand God's revelation to us? Exploring both Augustine's and Karl Barth's readings of the Johannine literature, Ike Miller casts a broader vision of divine illumination, arguing for a fully Trinitarian view of illumination that forms not just our intellect, but also appeals to the affections and encourages our ethical action.
The objective of this dissertation is to articulate the divine action involved in the work of illumination, and to do so by constructing an 0́−economy of divine light.0́+ This project is necessary due to the absence of a robustly triune account of illumination. Illumination has been restricted to the domain of pneumatology despite the biblical text's witness to the contrary. The Gospel and Letters of John are an exemplary demonstration of this. Through an examination of Augustine's Tractatus In Iohannis Evangelium and Karl Barth's ErklaÌ8rung des Johannes-Evangeliums this dissertation argues that the language of Light as it pertains to the Logos in the Johannine literature demands a more Christological and therefore, Trinitarian doctrine of illumination. From Augustine's theological interpretation of John, this project retrieves his theory of illumination, along with aspects of his Trinitarian theology and his understanding of God's nature as light. The project also draws upon Karl Barth's theological exegesis. By engaging the mostly untranslated work of his lectures on John, as well as his dogmatic work, this project constructs a doctrine of illumination that is located within the broader divine action of communicating light and life. This broader divine action is captured in what this projects calls an 0́−economy of divine light.0́+ Within this economy, human knowledge of God in illumination is about human participation in the Son's knowledge of the Father by the power of the Holy Spirit. In the event of one's initial illumination, God communicates knowledge of himself while also granting the capacity to receive such knowledge, to believe it and obey it. There is also the ongoing work of illumination. This ongoing illumination is participation in the light of the divine life, and it is grounded in a profound theological actualism. That is to say, this participation depends upon the present action of God for its reality in an individual's life. Thus, this dissertation concludes that to speak of this participation as a reality by the power of the Holy Spirit, is to say that this participation is the Holy Spirit's repetition of the divine life in the life of a human being.

Drawing from Buddhist and yogic precepts, this practical guide offers tools for becoming a better, more compassionate communicator at home, at work, and in the world Have you ever tried to tell someone what you want only to feel misunderstood and frustrated? Or hesitated to ask for what you needed because you didn't want to burden the other person? Or been stuck in blame or anger that wouldn't go away? Judith and Ike Lasater, long-term students of yoga and Buddhism, experienced dilemmas like these, too. Even though they had studied the yoga principle of satya (truth) and the Buddhist precept of right speech, it was not until they began practicing Marshall Rosenberg's techniques of Nonviolent Communication (NVC) that they understood how to live satya and right speech. In What We Say Matters, Judith and Ike describe their journey through NVC and how speech becomes a spiritual practice based on giving and receiving with compassion—everywhere, all the time—whether at home, at work, or in the world. Their writing is deeply personal, punctuated by their recounts of trial and error, success and failure, laughter and challenge—even in writing this book! They guide you through an introduction to NVC with clear explanations, poignant examples, suggested exercises, and helpful resources. With practice, you'll learn new ways to: • Extend empathy to yourself and others • Distinguish between feelings and needs • Make requests rather than demands • Choose connection over conflict • Create mutually satisfying outcomes
While the specific focus of this work is African American politics in the 'margins' of the South, this timely work examines minority and ethnic politics in rural America and other democratic societies. More importantly, this study explores the politics of everyone with a racial and ethnically diverse rural root_and how the majority versus minority political competition is played out in society. Unlike most books on national, state, and local governments, African American Politics in Rural America is concerned with theory and political actors_particularly their perceptions, frustrations, and, sometimes, satisfaction with the complex processes of governance at the grassroots level in American politics.

Growing up during the Great Depression and World War II, Ike Skelton dreamed of joining the military. That dream was shattered when he contracted one of the most dreaded diseases of the era: polio. Far from abandoning hope, Skelton, after treatment at Warm Springs, Georgia, overcame his disability and went on to become a college athlete, a celebrated lawyer, a Missouri state senator, and a U.S. Congressman. Achieve the Honorable is the deeply personal tale of Ike Skelton’s determined journey from the small town of Lexington, Missouri, to Capitol Hill. During his years in the U.S. House of Representatives, Skelton became known as a bipartisan negotiator and a champion of the Armed Services. Throughout the decades, he helped steer the nation through its most dangerous challenges, from Communism to terrorism; took a leading role in the reform of the Department of Defense; dedicated himself to fulfilling the interests of his constituents; and eventually rose to become chair of the House Armed Services Committee during such pivotal events as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. In addition to detailing Skelton’s political career and its accompanying challenges and triumphs, Achieve the Honorable provides inside glimpses into the lives of political titans like Harry Truman, Richard Nixon, and Bill Clinton. Along the way, we are treated to Skelton’s engaging humor and shrewd insight into twentieth- and twenty-first-century U.S. politics.
In SoulStirrers, H. Ike Okafor-Newsum describes the birth and development of an artistic movement in Cincinnati, Ohio, identified with the Neo-Ancestral impulse. The Neo-Ancestral impulse emerges as an extension of the Harlem Renaissance, the Negritude Movement, and the Black Arts Movement, all of which sought to re-represent the “primitive” and “savage” Black and African in new terms. Central to the dominant racial framework has always been the conception that the Black subject was not only inferior, but indeed incapable of producing art. The Neo-Ancestral impulse posed a challenge to both existing form and content. Like its intellectual antecedents, the movement did not separate art from life and raised a central question, one that the “soul stirrers” of Cincinnati are engaging in their artistic productions. Okafor-Newsum defines collapsing of the sacred and the profane as a central tendency of African aesthetics, transformed and rearticulated here in the Americas. In this volume, the artistic productions ask readers to consider the role of those creating and viewing this art by attempting to shift the way in which we view the ordinary. The works of these artists, therefore, are not only about the survival of African-derived cultural forms, though such remains a central effect of them. These extraordinary pieces, installations, and movements consistently refer to the cultural reality of the Americas and the need for political and intellectual transformation. They constitute important intellectual interventions that serve as indispensable elements in the redefinition and reinterpretation of our society. Featuring numerous color illustrations and profiles of artists, this volume reveals exciting trends in African American art and in the African diaspora more broadly.
African Renaissance in the Millennium frames a critical debate for the essential and necessary transformation of Africa in this epoch. E. Ike Udogu highlights how political, social, and economic development enterprises are to be vigorously pursued in order to advance the continent's renewal. Bringing into focus the discourses that are significant to move the continent forward, the author provides possible strategies that might lead to peaceful coexistence, development, and generation of wealth for the area's recovery. After several decades of policy missteps, inadequate government, ethnic and religious conflicts, and civil war, Africa is in need of this resurgence. African Renaissance in the Millennium is a book appropriate to all levels of students and researchers with an interest in Africa's future. Book jacket.
The Failure of Leadership in Africa’s Development examines the dominant scholarly theories about the cause of Africa’s underdevelopment and argues that none of the traditionally invoked causes—an alleged black racial inferiority, the colonial and neo-colonial expropriation of Africa, purported natural defects in Africa’s geography—is plausible as the explanation of the main cause of the continent’s underdevelopment. Rather, the book argues that the chief cause of the continent’s lag is the failure of leadership of Africa’s ruling classes. This failure of leadership, the book shows, is most evident in the historically traceable indifference of a long succession of Africa’s ruling classes to the scientific and technological advances that were emerging from Europe and Asia during the most critical periods of Africa’s history. It was this indifference, the book argues, that set the stage for the subsequent conquest, expropriation, and technological stagnation of Africa. The book recommends a blueprint for the continent’s future development.
Taut and fast-paced, The Wolf at the End of the Block tells the story of Abe, a resident of the Rightlynd neighborhood of Chicago, who seeks justice after a mysterious, late-night interatction at a boarded-up bar. The intrigue envelops Abe, his sister, his boss, and a morally complicated reporter in pursuit of the truth. But as the clock ticks down, the play discloses the hidden motives of each character, leading to a finale of unpredictable twists, turns, and reveals. A modern-day neo-noir, The Wolf at the End of the Block remixes several different genres to present a new kind of thriller that is socially conscious, relentlessy suspenseful, and bitingly funny. Praised for its power and grace, the play is one of Holter’s most unforgettable. The other plays in the cycle are Rightlynd, Exit Strategy, Sender, Prowess, Red Rex, and Lottery Day.
After World War I, the League of Nations assigned management of the German colony of Namibia to Britain, which passed control to South Africa as a "trophy" for the country's support during the war. The League mandated that South Africa prepare the country for independence, but South Africa showed no sign of working toward that goal. The clash over interpretation of the League's mandate led to 70 years of complicated diplomacy to solve the dispute. This incisive volume offers an in-depth analysis of the political and diplomatic efforts undertaken by representatives of the United Nations, Namibia, and South Africa--with the assistance of the international community, the Organization of African Unity, and Western powers--during the struggle for self-rule in Namibia from 1920 to 1990. This classic example of conflict resolution technique in global and African studies provides a useful template for conflict negotiation around the world.
Attempts to understand why African and Americans are over-represented in United States crime statistics have been made complex by the existence of a multiplicity of explanations. Every adult in the United States seems to know what causes crime, and is prepared to present some seasoned argument in support of their view. Because of the existence of this divergence, attempts to device a viable format for solving either the crime problem, the discrimination problem or the over representation problem continues to be difficult. Important aspects of authentic jurisprudence that acknowledge the need to examine a victim's contribution to the criminal event, retributive justice and collective responsibility, are essential attributes of traditional African culture. These attributes are conspicuously absent in the official social control systems that currently exist in the United States. This book suggests that to reduce or eliminate African American involvement in crime therefore, it is necessary to incorporate those attributes of equity and justice, which are essential components of the traditional legal systems of their ancestors into our official social control systems. Such incorporation will help to reconnect African Americans with their ancestral lgbo culture, reinforce their knowledge of African history, strengthen their self esteem and encourage the development of pride in their African heritage. It will also help to reduce their involvement as victims or participants in anti social behavior, and eventually solve the overreprentation problem.
This book presents a technical review of ecological and life history information on a range of Bornean wildlife species, aimed at identifying what makes these species sensitive to timber harvesting practices and associated impacts. It addresses three audiences: 1) those involved in assessing and regulating timber harvesting activities in Southeast Asia, 2) those involved in trying to achieve conservation goals in the region, and 3) those undertaking research to improve multipurpose forest management. This book shows that forest management can be improved in many simple ways to allow timber extraction and wildlife conservation to be more compatible than under current practices. The recommendations can also be valuable to the many governmental and non-governmental organisations promoting sustainable forest management and eco-labelling. Finally, it identifies a number of shortcomings and gaps in knowledge, which the hope can interest the scientific community and promote further research. This review is, an important scientific step toward understanding and improving sustainable forestry practices for long-term biodiversity conservation. Even in the short term, however, significant improvements can be made to improve both conservation and the efficiency of forest management, and there is no need to delay action due to a perceived lack of information. In the longer term it is expected that the recommendations from this review will be implemented, and that further research will continue to help foster an acceptable balance among the choices needed to maintain healthy wildlife populations and biodiversity in a productive forest estate.
