Crosswinds is a social satire set in a boarding school. The themes are intrinsically intertwined. The story revolves around Mrs. Okharedia, one of the major characters and Mr. Bello, a debauched assistant head of school who is ready to sacrifice anyone in his quest to satisfy his expatriate masters. His inordinate desire to explore Mrs. Okharedia leads him on a collision course he is ill-prepared for. On one particular incident that will ever remain fresh in her memory, a grade IX boy tapped her buttocks in the presence of his classmates. She slapped the boy and asked the boy to leave her class. When the matter reached Mr. Radcliff, she was reproached for not exercising caution in dealing with the boy, took exception to this, and reminded her that the school rule forbade her from making any form of physical contact with her students. The social relations among students and staff, the school curricula, the role of money, the admission process, facilities at the learning centers, and the conditions of services of members of staff, among others, are explored. The administration of discipline to staff members and students are also lampooned.

War is hell is an understatement! Kenny knew something was wrong as his best friend tripped a wire. For a couple of seconds, they just stared at each other. It was as if his friend were saying goodbye. Even though it was only seconds, it lasted so long! Then came the explosion! His friend put his back against the mortar on the tree and took the entire load. Kenny flew backward about ten feet and thought he was dying as he was covered in so much blood and body parts. As it turned out, it was his friend who just saved his life. Kenny went into a state of shock and had to be flown out to a field hospital for observation. After a week, he was sent back into combat. A letter from Mom stated that my aunt was worried Kenny was losing his will to live. When I heard this, I knew that I had to get Kenny out of the fighting for a week to rest up and give him a reason to live again. To do this, I needed to make up fake orders as I had done before-but nothing to this extreme!

In SoulStirrers, H. Ike Okafor-Newsum describes the birth and development of an artistic movement in Cincinnati, Ohio, identified with the Neo-Ancestral impulse. The Neo-Ancestral impulse emerges as an extension of the Harlem Renaissance, the Negritude Movement, and the Black Arts Movement, all of which sought to re-represent the “primitive” and “savage” Black and African in new terms. Central to the dominant racial framework has always been the conception that the Black subject was not only inferior, but indeed incapable of producing art. The Neo-Ancestral impulse posed a challenge to both existing form and content. Like its intellectual antecedents, the movement did not separate art from life and raised a central question, one that the “soul stirrers” of Cincinnati are engaging in their artistic productions. Okafor-Newsum defines collapsing of the sacred and the profane as a central tendency of African aesthetics, transformed and rearticulated here in the Americas. In this volume, the artistic productions ask readers to consider the role of those creating and viewing this art by attempting to shift the way in which we view the ordinary. The works of these artists, therefore, are not only about the survival of African-derived cultural forms, though such remains a central effect of them. These extraordinary pieces, installations, and movements consistently refer to the cultural reality of the Americas and the need for political and intellectual transformation. They constitute important intellectual interventions that serve as indispensable elements in the redefinition and reinterpretation of our society. Featuring numerous color illustrations and profiles of artists, this volume reveals exciting trends in African American art and in the African diaspora more broadly.
