This collection brings together the text of the monograph Art and Morality by the philosopher Richard Beardsmore along with fourteen other essays (both published and previously unpublished) in which he explores further some of the themes of his seminal book. With the revival of interest among philosophers and others in the relationships between art and morality the publication of this material is especially timely. Beardsmore's original contribution first introduced the principal terminology in which discussions have been expressed and many of the later essays showed the influence of Wittgenstein. The publication of this anthology of his writings on these themes has been welcomed by others writing on the same or related themes.

Africa is a continent gripped by civil wars and widespread famine. The causes of many of the continent's problems are deep rooted and can be traced to Africa's colonial past, when European powers divided the spoils of the continent into separate sovereign states. The African Inheritance examines the effect this "balkanization" of Africa has had, and is having, on the political and economic well-being of the continent. From a brief history of pre-colonial Africa and its subsequent European partition and inevitable decolonization, the book discusses the consequences of such an inheritance: small and weak states, destructive secessionist movements, irredentism and African imperialism. Attempts to tackle these problems and assert independent development are inhibited by the colonial inheritance.
In Plato: All That Matters, Ieuan Williams argues that no one can study philosophy or politics without an awareness of Plato, whose work has reverberated through 2500 years of philosophy and history. Dr Ieuan Williams explains both what Plato thought, and why this continues to matter today. In the ten years of research which have led up to this book, Dr Williams has assessed the relevance of Plato to everything from the philosophy of education to media theory. This important book shows how Plato remains as relevant today as he has ever been. This accessible and readable book will appeal both to students and general readers, giving a fascinating introduction to Plato - and what matters most about his work.
