Hitler’s regime was notorious for its many experiments and its various secret ploys, weapons, and technological developments. But typically, the term “secret German weapons” only turns up images of the V-1 and V-2 missiles that played a part in bombing London in 1944. But truth be told, there were many more unheard of weapons behind the Third Reich. Many of these weapons have been unknown to the general public. Here, Ian V. Hogg, one of the world’s leading experts on weaponry, reveals the sheer magnitude of Hitler’s secret weapon projects, from the V-3 and the V-4 missiles, to the Schmetterling, to the German nuclear bomb, to the question of nuclear war and more. This detailed account of the myths surrounding secret German weapons examines the various fields the Germans concentrated on during their weapon development process and discusses difficulties that arrived in the process and how, in many cases, the ideas were exploited by other nations. German Secret Weapons of the Second World War draws comparisons between similar Allied projects and narrates the deeper purpose behind many of these projects. Many of these developments were not completed before the end of the war, but have created a solid foundation for many of today’s great military developments. Skyhorse Publishing, as well as our Arcade imprint, are proud to publish a broad range of books for readers interested in history--books about World War II, the Third Reich, Hitler and his henchmen, the JFK assassination, conspiracies, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, gladiators, Vikings, ancient Rome, medieval times, the old West, and much more. The World War II Official Standard Ordnance Catalogue of Small Arms, Tanks, Armoured Cars, Artillery, Anti-aircraft Guns, Ammunition, Grenades, Mines, et cetera
During WWII, various U.S. military agencies produced catalogues of equipment to fill the gaps left by the official War Department manuals, which led to inconsistent data appearing in different sources. In order to standardize information and properly catalogue all the equipment, the U.S. Ordnance Department put together a master guide, published here as The American Arsenal. All the information was checked and authenticated by reference to Ordnance Committee Minutes and similar authorities. No other single source provides so much accurate and authentic detail on U.S. weapons, ammunition, vehicles and other combat equipment, with an authoritative explanation of their development and introduction processes. Profusely illustrated with over 900 photographs and drawings, the facts and figures are set in context in the introduction by weapons expert Ian V. Hogg. This is an invaluable reference work for those interested in the military equipment of WWII.
Scott's Shadow is the first comprehensive account of the flowering of Scottish fiction between 1802 and 1832, when post-Enlightenment Edinburgh rivaled London as a center for literary and cultural innovation. Ian Duncan shows how Walter Scott became the central figure in these developments, and how he helped redefine the novel as the principal modern genre for the representation of national historical life. Duncan traces the rise of a cultural nationalist ideology and the ascendancy of Scott's Waverley novels in the years after Waterloo. He argues that the key to Scott's achievement and its unprecedented impact was the actualization of a realist aesthetic of fiction, one that offered a socializing model of the imagination as first theorized by Scottish philosopher and historian David Hume. This aesthetic, Duncan contends, provides a powerful novelistic alternative to the Kantian-Coleridgean account of the imagination that has been taken as normative for British Romanticism since the early twentieth century. Duncan goes on to examine in detail how other Scottish writers inspired by Scott's innovations--James Hogg and John Galt in particular--produced in their own novels and tales rival accounts of regional, national, and imperial history. Scott's Shadow illuminates a major but neglected episode of British Romanticism as well as a pivotal moment in the history and development of the novel.

In modern liberal democracies, rights-based judicial intervention in the policy choices of elected bodies has always been controversial. For some, judicial intervention has tended to trivialize and impoverish democratic politics. For others, judges are better understood as contributing to a healthy dialogue between the different spheres of the constitution. This book offers a contribution to on-going debates surrounding the judicial role in protecting human rights in western society.
GBS_insertPreviewButtonPopup('ISBN:9780748620869);Winter Evening Tales (1820; second edition 1821) was James Hogg's most successful work of prose fiction in his lifetime. Exhibiting the most complex genesis of any of Hogg's works, it is the outstanding example of a 'national' genre pioneered by him - the miscellaneous collection of popular and traditional narratives. Hogg's experimental medley of novellas, tales, poems and sketches posed a lively alternative to the dominant form of the historical novel established by Walter Scott. The collection includes terse masterpieces of mystery and the uncanny, virtuoso improvisations on folktale themes, and - the highlights of the edition - two brilliant autobiographical novellas, The Renowned Adventures of Basil Lee and Love Adventures of Mr George Cochrane.Reprinted in incomplete and unreliable texts in Victorian editions of Hogg's works, Winter Evening Tales fell into almost total obscurity after the author's death. The Stirling/ South Carolina Edition of the Collected Works of James Hogg is delighted to republish this key work in Hogg's career in its entirety for the first time since the early nineteenth century.
