Ian Hill Nish's Books

Following his earlier account of The Anglo-Japanese Alliance from 1894 t0 1907, Dr Nish's book studies the renewal of the alliance in 1911 and the working relationship between the two countries until the alliance ended in 1923. First published in 1972, this title is part of the Bloomsbury Academic Collections series.

Developed in close collaboration with Ian Nish, this book contains a wide and substantial cross-section of writings, thematically structured around essays in the special areas of Anglo-Japanese Alliance.

Nish's writings on international relations affecting Japan, Russia, China and Korea in the 19th and 20th centuries are collected together in one volume.

In this book the authors present many unpublished place names from Upper Deeside and from counties in the Highlands beyond. These were heard from indigenous folk back to 1941. Names are given with phonetic spellings, so that readers can pronounce them accurately, and in most cases with translations from Gaelic, Norse, Scots or Pictish into English. The book is richly illustrated with photographs of places and informants. Of interest to residents and visitors, it should help preserve for the future an important aspect of local identity and language.
