This programme is designed both for people with firm opinions and for people who have no opinions at all. It does not assume extensive Bible knowledge neither does it mitigate against those who are recognized teachers of scripture. In fact, the real challenge of this programme is how church leaders manage the ensuing debates that arise from studying the Bible in this way. If you see your primary task as a leader as being one of maintaining the orthodoxy of your church tradition than this programme is probably not for you! If, on the other hand, you believe that the words of Jesus are true, that the Holy Spirit has been given to us to lead us into all truth then this is an opportunity to strip away the traditions of men and go deeper into God's Word and there discover anew the immense treasures that he has revealed in His scriptures.
First published 1990, this volume consists of an introductory essay by Ian Lowe and a comprehensive catalogue of all Wilfred Fairclough’s prints, some 140, from 1932 to the present (1990). Al the prints are illustrated in the body of the catalogue for ease of identification and 48 are also reproduced as large format duotone illustrations. From the Royal College of Art, Wilfred Fairclough won the Rome Scholarship in Engraving in 1934 and was elected an Associate of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in the same week. His engravings, inspired by his travels in Italy, Spain and Germany in the 1930s, were succeeded by etchings of British subjects and topography, notably of Oxford, until, with a Leverhulme grant, he returned to Italy in 1961. Increasingly, thereafter he has found his subjects and his inspiration in Venice, in concerts, restaurant interiors, and the Carnival, and in Lucerne, in markets and the human figure. Wilfred Fairclough has exhibited consistently at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers and at the Royal Academy (where his most recent Venetian subject, Venice Carnival. Clowns, sold out in three days). Now aged 83 he is still working. There has been no slackening off in his productivity nor in the quality of his work since he retired from teaching at the Kingston College of Art in 1972. The Catalogue is based on his own meticulous records. It will be an essential source of information for all who are interested in his work as a printmaker. Elected an Honorary Member of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers and Engravers in 1975, Ian Lowe worked in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford from 1962 until 1987. There he was responsible for the collection of nineteenth- and twentieth-century British prints. He arranged and catalogued numerous exhibitions including those devoted to ~F.L. Griggs, R.S. Austin, Robin Tanner, Alan Gwynne-Jones and Richard Shirley Smith. His association with Wilfred Fairclough dates from 1974. His introductory essay is both biographical and an appreciation of Fairclough’s achievement as a printmaker. It is based on their correspondence, lectures, and meetings as well as on the study of the archives and records of the last sixty years.

Ashingdon and South Fambridge are two neighbouring historic parishes in the Rochford District of south-east Essex which have now been united into one. Stone Age finds have been made in South Fambridge, while Ashingdon Road is likely to be Roman. The 1016 Battle of Assandun, fought between the rival kings, Edmund Ironside and Cnut, may have taken place in the locality and both settlements are mentioned in the Domesday Book. Ashingdon is now the more dominant of the two. Originating from a network of ancient farms and manor houses, it was transformed into a modern settlement following extensive development in the 20th century. In 1971 in the southwestern area of the Roman Forum of Corinth a round-bottomed drainage channel was discovered filled with the largest deposit of pottery of the 4th century ever found in the city, some coins, terracotta figurines, and metal and stone objects. This volume publishes the pottery and metal and stone objects, and includes a re-examination of the coins by Orestes Zervos. Some of the cooking ware has been subjected to neutron activation analysis, and a statistical analysis of all recovered pottery has been completed. The contents of Drain 1971-1 are important for the function of the Classical buildings in this part of Corinth, especially Buildings I and II, and for the chronology of the renovation program that included the construction of the South Stoa, which was probably not built before the last decade of the 4th century.

Ian Inkster’s intent in these studies is to move beyond the high culture and expertise of science towards the construction of the culture of urban communities. The work draws on a mass of detailed research and focuses on Britain's social and cultural advantages over other industrialising nations in the years prior to the Great Exhibition of 1851, an advantage which was not created by any single decision, nor by any explicit investment effect. Out of urban culture emerged a public sphere and an information system within which class divisions were abrogated; at the same time the relations between information and technique became complex and decidedly non-linear. Ben Jonson was the greatest of Shakespeare's contemporaries. In the century following his death he was seen by many as the finest of all English writers, living or dead. His fame rested not only on the numerous plays he had written for the theatre, but on his achievements over three decades as principal masque-writer to the early Stuart court, where he had worked in creative, and often stormy, collaboration with Inigo Jones. One of the most accomplished poets of the age, he had become - in fact if not in title - the first Poet Laureate in England. Jonson's life was full of drama. Serving in the Low Countries as a young man, he overcame a Spanish adversary in single combat in full view of both the armies. His early satirical play, The Isle of Dogs, landed him in prison, and brought all theatrical activity in London to a temporary — and very nearly to a permanent — standstill. He was 'almost at the gallows' for killing a fellow actor after a quarrel, and converted to Catholicism while awaiting execution. He supped with the Gunpowder conspirators on the eve of their planned coup at Westminster. After satirizing the Scots in Eastward Ho! he was imprisoned again; and throughout his career was repeatedly interrogated about plays and poems thought to contain seditious or slanderous material. In his middle years, twenty stone in weight, he walked to Scotland and back, seemingly partly to fulfil a wager, and partly to see the land of his forebears. He travelled in Europe as tutor to the mischievous son of Sir Walter Ralegh, who 'caused him to be drunken and dead drunk' and wheeled provocatively through the streets of Paris. During his later years he presided over a sociable club in the Apollo Room in Fleet Street, mixed with the most learned scholars of his day, and viewed with keen interest the political, religious, and scientific controversies of the day. Cynicism began as a school of philosophy that was largely inspired by Socrates and often decried by popular commentators as a social pathology, a nihilistic rebellion against the foundations of civilization. Modern definitions of the cynic describe an individual who is negative and sarcastic, violently opposed to established authority and social convention, and dedicated to existentialism. This book attempts to vindicate cynicism, arguing that it is both a progressive approach to social dilemmas and an enlightened understanding of the human condition.
