This is Volume four of ten of the selected works of I.A. Richards from 1919 to 1938. Originally published in 1929, this study looks at literary judgement. The ‘Practical Criticism’ experiment began to take shape in late 1923. A. C. Benson, then Master of Magdalene College, records in his diary for the 13th of October ‘that at dinner Richards had suggested as a good examination for English students to print five extracts of poetry and prose, with no clue as to author and date, and containing one really worthless piece – and ask for comments and opinion’. This volume is the evidence of that experiment.

Mac Logan is a man with a very dark past. He was once an educated cop. He’s now an expendable P.I. called Jarrett. The story begins when he is assigned to investigate a series of muggings happening in town by his new boss and friend Derek Hawke. Logan starts the investigation to find out that there’s more to the case than meets the eye. He discovers that this mysterious caper is linked with a treasure hunt in the bad lands of Tikal, in Mexico. Logan goes to Mexico with Hawke and uncovers a smuggling operation there. He has a run in with a gang lord craving for supremacy; and finds out the truth behind a girl’s death. The man now called Jarrett also learns about his boss’s past. As Logan keeps sleuthing, he discovers the real culprits behind the brutal muggings. Logan journeys back to England where he has another encounter with an old enemy. A notorious crook called Quentin ‘the Rat’ Baker. So when the expendable PI uncovers the man’s secret he equally unveils the vicious and faceless criminal network responsible for the abrupt murders he sets out to investigate.

The scene is set in this literary history as five children destined to become monarchs of Hawaii are placed into the hands of Calvinist missionaries in a resdential school. The damage done to the personalities and self-concepts of these future monarchs by the indoctrination (rather than education) of the Euro-American zealots causes difficulties that come to light when the children eventually take power in the Hawaiian monarchy, which under their rule, is overthrown in 1893. The facts surrounding the collapse of Hawaiian independence are woven into the story of two modern day Hawaiians, Keono Kane--a computer specialist--and his girlfriend, Tamara Noguichi. The lovers are brought back in time against their will by the akua, or ghost, of Queen Lili'uokalani. The akua forces them to view the Queen's life and find the reasons that resulted in her reign being overthrown so that her spirit can free itself from it's earthly bounds. The result is a lively adventure story that takes place in both modern and past Hawaii.

Astronomy and Astrophysics Abstracts is prepared by a special department of the Astronomisches Rechen-Institut under the auspices of the International Astronomical Union. Volume 44 records literature published in 1987 and received before February 15, 1988. Some older documents which we received late and which are not surveyed in earlier volumes are inc1uded too. N. Whitehead in their Principia mathematica (1910-1913). ? Few historians have argued so forcefully or persuasively as Bernard S. Bachrach for the study of warfare as not only worthy of scholarly attention, but demanding of it. In so doing, as much as any scholar of his generation, he has helped to define the status quaestionis for the field of medieval military history. The Medieval Way of War: Studies in Medieval Military History in Honor of Bernard S. Bachrach pays tribute to its honoree by gathering in a single volume seventeen original studies from an international roster of leading experts in the military history of medieval Europe. Ranging chronologically from Late Antiquity through the Later Middle Ages (ca. AD 300-1500), and with a broad geographical scope stretching from the British Isles to the Middle East, these diverse studies address an array of critical themes and debates relevant to the conduct of war in medieval Europe. These themes include the formation and implementation of military grand strategies; the fiscal, material, and administrative resources that underpinned the conduct of war in medieval Europe; and religious, legal, and artistic responses to military violence. Collectively, these seventeen studies embrace the interdisciplinarity and topical diversity intrinsic to Bachrach’s research. Additionally, they strongly echo his conviction that the study of armed conflict is indispensable for an accurate and comprehensive understanding of medieval European history.

Furthermore Baika discusses verbal transgressions such as flattery, evil counsel, double talk, sowing of discord, and falsifying of words, under the heading Lingua dolosa "The Guileful Tongue," and the relationship between violence and the poetic discourse. The myriad ways in which the two iconic poets of medieval France and Italy absorb the tradition of peccata linguae in their works prove that abusive speech was not the exclusive sphere of interest of the ecclesiastical writers; secular poetry in the vernacular enriched in original ways the medieval debate on verbal vices. The Rose and Geryon addresses scholars and students of French and Italian literatures, as well as readers interested in ethics and women's studies.

As a young lawyer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Louis Brandeis, born into a family of reformers who came to the United States to escape European anti-Semitism, established the way modern law is practiced. He was an early champion of the right to privacy and pioneer the idea of pro bono work by attorneys. Brandeis invented savings bank life insurance in Massachusetts and was a driving force in the development of the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Reserve Act, and the law establishing the Federal Trade Commission. Brandeis witnessed and suffered from the anti-Semitism rampant in the United States in the early twentieth century, and with the outbreak of World War I, became at age fifty-eight the head of the American Zionist movement. During the brutal six-month congressional confirmation battle that ensued when Woodrow Wilson nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1916, Brandeis was described as “a disturbing element in any gentlemen’s club.” But once on the Court, he became one of its most influential members, developing the modern jurisprudence of free speech and the doctrine of a constitutionally protected right to privacy and suggesting what became known as the doctrine of incorporation, by which the Bill of Rights came to apply to the states. It is now well accepted that deforestation is a key source of greenhouse gas emissions and of climate change, with forests representing major sinks for carbon. As a result, public and private initiatives for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD) have been widely endorsed by policy-makers. A key issue is the feasibility of carbon trading or other incentives to encourage land-owners and indigenous people, particularly in developing tropical countries, to conserve forests, rather than to cut them down for agricultural or other development purposes. This book presents a major critique of the aims and policies of REDD as currently structured, particularly in terms of their social feasibility. It is shown how the claims to be able to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as well as enhance people's livelihoods and biodiversity conservation are unrealistic. There is a naive assumption that technical or economic fixes are sufficient for success. However, the social and governance aspects of REDD, and its enhanced version known as REDD+, are shown to be implausible. Instead to enhance REDD's prospects, the author provides a roadmap for developing a new social contract that puts people first.
