Dyadic (Walsh) analysis emerged as a new research area in applied mathematics and engineering in early seventies within attempts to provide answers to demands from practice related to application of spectral analysis of different classes of signals, including audio, video, sonar, and radar signals. In the meantime, it evolved in a mature mathematical discipline with fundamental results and important features providing basis for various applications. The book will provide fundamentals of the area through reprinting carefully selected earlier publications followed by overview of recent results concerning particular subjects in the area written by experts, most of them being founders of the field, and some of their followers. In this way, this first volume of the two volume book offers a rather complete coverage of the development of dyadic Walsh analysis, and provides a deep insight into its mathematical foundations necessary for consideration of generalizations and applications that are the subject of the second volume. The presented theory is quite sufficient to be a basis for further research in the subject area as well as to be applied in solving certain new problems or improving existing solutions for tasks in the areas which motivated development of the dyadic analysis.

The second volume of the two volumes book is dedicated to various extensions and generalizations of Dyadic (Walsh) analysis and related applications. Considered are dyadic derivatives on Vilenkin groups and various other Abelian and finite non-Abelian groups. Since some important results were developed in former Soviet Union and China, we provide overviews of former work in these countries. Further, we present translations of three papers that were initially published in Chinese. The presentation continues with chapters written by experts in the area presenting discussions of applications of these results in specific tasks in the area of signal processing and system theory. Efficient computing of related differential operators on contemporary hardware, including graphics processing units, is also considered, which makes the methods and techniques of dyadic analysis and generalizations computationally feasible. The volume 2 of the book ends with a chapter presenting open problems pointed out by several experts in the area.

Middle-class households resented falling real incomes. Even more than today, food prices dominated consumer concerns. Yet farmers wanted high commodity prices. Accordingly, both sides blamed and attacked meatpackers, wholesalers, and retailers. Then as now, inflation hurt whichever party held the White House. Fumbling responses by Wilson's administration and the Federal Reserve led to hesitant price controls, punitive raids and prosecutions, and a now-familiar fallback--high interest rates in 1920 and subsequent recession. An epilogue traces continuing popular and political responses to changes in the consumer price index down to 2020. David I. Macleod is Professor Emeritus of History at Central Michigan University, where he taught American social and political history. His publications include Building Character in the American Boy: The Boy Scouts, YMCA, and Their Forerunners, 1870-1920 and The Age of the Child: Children in America, 1890-1920.

Seven years has passed, and the success of Admiral Wayne James Cooper's United Earth Star Depth Naval Agency has grown into a flourishing military organization for interplanetary service for which he had hoped it would become within the short period of years during its promising development. With the combined efforts of the Star Depth program and the United Earth Space Force Defense Fleet Agency, both branches have successfully colonized and charted several planetary star systems within the inner-rim of Milky Way galaxy. But once again an unexpected circumstance has just introduced itself as a compromising catastrophe to both the newly intergalactic armed forces of the planet earth, and its governing supervision of the newly formatted United Earth Administration as a highly more dangerous threat than ever before. An Alliance-Class, Nuclear, Carrier Submarine, one out of fifteen that has been built by the Star Depth Naval Engineering Corps, designated as the U.S.S. Typhoon, SSCN-811 has disappeared within the deep, oceanic regions of an earth like planet called Beta-Two, in a well known star system known as Alpha Centauri. Their whereabouts are unknown, and the Space Force in addition with the Star Depth Navy is considering them as missing in action during a time of an uncertain resolution with their recent conflict seven years ago with the barbaric, warrior-class aliens known as the Corrilleans. The Administration along with Admiral Cooper's military chiefs of staff have come to the conclusion that the Corrillean Empire may be involved in the disappearance of the UESDN submarine. But the five-star admiral, and chairman of the joint chiefs wants to know for certain if the Corrilleans are responsible for the abduction. Once again, he forms a conjoined task force of Space Force and Naval personnel to seek out and investigate the disappearance of the lost submarine. But little do they know as they come to grips in finding out the truth, and who is really responsible.

As a young lawyer in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Louis Brandeis, born into a family of reformers who came to the United States to escape European anti-Semitism, established the way modern law is practiced. He was an early champion of the right to privacy and pioneer the idea of pro bono work by attorneys. Brandeis invented savings bank life insurance in Massachusetts and was a driving force in the development of the Clayton Antitrust Act, the Federal Reserve Act, and the law establishing the Federal Trade Commission. Brandeis witnessed and suffered from the anti-Semitism rampant in the United States in the early twentieth century, and with the outbreak of World War I, became at age fifty-eight the head of the American Zionist movement. During the brutal six-month congressional confirmation battle that ensued when Woodrow Wilson nominated him to the Supreme Court in 1916, Brandeis was described as “a disturbing element in any gentlemen’s club.” But once on the Court, he became one of its most influential members, developing the modern jurisprudence of free speech and the doctrine of a constitutionally protected right to privacy and suggesting what became known as the doctrine of incorporation, by which the Bill of Rights came to apply to the states. In this award-winning biography, Melvin Urofsky gives us a panoramic view of Brandeis’s unprecedented impact on American society and law.

Why do unelected federal judges have so much power to make policy in the United States? Why were federal judges able to thwart apparent legislative victories won by labor organizations in the Lochner era? Most scholars who have addressed such questions assume that the answer lies in the judiciary's constitutionally guaranteed independence, and thus worry that insulated judges threaten democracy when they stray from baseline positions chosen by legislators. This book argues for a fundamental shift in the way scholars think about judicial policy-making. Scholars need to notice that legislators also empower judges to make policy as a means of escaping accountability. This study of legislative deference to the courts offers a dramatic reinterpretation of the history of twentieth-century labor law and shows how attention to legislative deferrals can help scholars to address vexing questions about the consequences of judicial power in a democracy.
