Fragments of an Analytic Pub Crawl traces the journey of my life, its memories, the events and the places where I have been and what I have read. The book title is not to be confused with the traditional drinking pub crawl, it is a way of describing the psychogeographical nature of this book. Patrick ffrench, the writer, described psychogeography as “an analytic pub crawl”, a lived experience – one drifts from one place to the next; observing, noting, reacting. We may drift through a city, or a life and absorb. This is the “dérive”. Charles Baudelaire named this person, the flâneur. Just as the past left traces in today’s built environment, so have we, and so have I. This book traces those memories, it’s part memoir, part history, and part essay, The subjects reflect a variety of interests: growing up in Northern Ireland, the Troubles, my life in IT education, Irish humour, life-skills, reading, writing, music, emigration, family, urban liveability, the pandemic and much much more.

The author, Gregory Hugh Brown, is the grandson of the books central character, Clover McKinley Palmer. The artists brother, James Roger Brown, did over thirty years of ancestral research which provided the inspiration for the stories and legends within Fields of Clover. The author and his brother are both MFA graduates of the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Sadly his brother, an internationally acclaimed artist, passed away in 1997 shortly after finishing his ancestral work, entitled Autobiography in the Shape of Alabama II. This ancestral work fully documented and paid homage to our grandfather and his mother, Mary Dizenia Palmer. It is my intention withFields of Clover to honor these ancestors as well as my brother who did so much to make this book a reality.

Here Hugh Small shows how the history of the Crimean War has been manipulated to conceal Britain's – and Europe's – failure. The war governments and early historians combined to withhold the truth from an already disappointed nation in a deception that lasted over a century. Accounts of battles, still widely believed, gave fictitious leadership roles to senior officers.
