Miss Emma Woodhouse of Hartfield lives in the small town of Highbury, and is young, pretty, and rich. Though she has decided she will never marry, Emma takes credit for matchmaking her friend and former governess, Miss Taylor, to the widower Mr. Weston. Emma decides to organize marriages for others of her acquaintance, despite friendly warnings not to meddle from Mr. Knightley, who is both an old friend, her brother-in-law, and the wealthy owner of Donwell Abbey. Emma resolves to marry her new friend, a pretty orphan named Harriet Smith, to the young parish priest Mr. Elton. This fails once Emma realizes to her horror that Elton desires to marry her instead. New arrivals come to Highbury, including young orphan Miss Fairfax and Elton's new pretentious wife. Frank Churchill, the handsome son of Mr. Weston, also arrives generating interest and gossip. Emma, so sure of her ability to judge the feelings of others, believes that Frank wishes to marry her. Did the world's most famous playboy prince become a king and then a traitor?King or Pawn? - Volume One of the dramatic saga The Fools' Crowns - weaves fact and fiction as dramatic events unfold. King Edward VIII is forced to face a terrible choice - his throne or his love. The King, the Royal family, courtiers, politicians, diplomats, friends, enemies and spies all play a part in a drama that rocks a nation and an empire. From Buckingham Palace in London to the Chancellory in Berlin; from the King's retreat in Windsor Great Park, Fort Belvedere, to Hitler's mountain lair at Berchtesgarden, the intrigue unfolds. Was the King no more than an immature and naive hedonist whose self-obsessed adolescent nature was swayed by flattery? Or, ominously, did he see his future with Wallis Simpson, his wife and queen, and he the monarch of the kingdom of a united Great Britain and Germany, created and ruled by Adolf Hitler's Third Reich? Was the King manipulated into abdicating because he and his lover were a threat to the very country of which he was monarch? Was he a traitor or a mere pawn in the great game that was leading Europe and the world to war?
A guide to complement the theory on effective home/school links, this work outlines proven and tested initiatives that have evolved over a decade within one primary school. There is an accompanying rationale for each of the strategies and proposals considered.
The idea for this book has evolved from our desire to present a conceptual approach to the study of neurotransmitters in epilepsy. Such an approach requires an understanding of the function of neurotransmitter systems in various experimental models of epilep sy. Toward this goal we have included in this book chapters on neurotransmitter systems in nine different epilepsy models. To com plete the coverage of this topic, there is a chapter on the role of selected neurotransmitters in the various types of human epilep sies. In the final chapter the editors integrated the neurotransmit ter data from the various epilepsy models into a matrix from which a better understanding of the function of these neurotransmitters in modulating epileptogenesis may be obtained. The information found in this book is not the result of a sym posium on this topic, but rather a review of available information on neurotransmitters in each of the experimental models. The evi dence is presented by knowledgeable researchers using these models. This approach gives a current, broader, and more thorough presentation of each of the topics. We therefore feel that this is not just a glimpse at the subject matter, but a panoramic view of the topic.

These private journals, made available here for the first time, record Hugh Trevor-Roper's visit to the People's Republic of China in the autumn of 1965, shortly before the outbreak of the Cultural Revolution, and describe the controversial aftermath of his journey on his return to England. The visit was a catalogue of frustrations, which he relates with the verve and irony of a master narrator who relished the human comedy. His efforts to meet the real life and mind of China, in whose history and politics he had long been interested, were blocked at every turn by the resources of state propaganda and the claustrophobic attention of sullen Party guides. The visit was arranged by the London-based Society for Anglo-Chinese Understanding, which was ostensibly committed to the impartial interchange of culture and ideas. It proved to be run by a Communist claque whose ruthless methods of control outwitted the well-connected membership. Back in England, and with help from MI5, he resolved to get to the bottom of the society's affairs. His investigations provoked a tumultuous public row which Trevor-Roper, no shirker of controversy, zestfully traces in these pages. Through the book, which closes with an account of his visit to Taiwan and South-East Asia in 1967, there run the wisdom of historical perspective that he brought to contemporary events and his lifelong commitment to the defence of liberal values and practices against their ideological adversaries.
Although John D. MacDonald published seventy novels and more than five hundred short stories in his lifetime, he is remembered best for his Travis McGee series. He introduced McGee in 1964 with The Deep Blue Goodbye. With Travis McGee, MacDonald changed the pattern of the hardboiled private detectives who preceeded him. McGee has a social conscience, holds thoughtful conversations with his retired economist buddy Meyer, and worries about corporate greed, racism and the Florida ecolgoy in a long series whose brand recognition for the series the author cleverly advanced by inserting a color in every title. Merrill carefully builds a picture of a man who in unexpected ways epitomized the Horatio Alger sagas that comprised his strict father's secular bible. From a financially struggling childhood and a succession of drab nine-to-five occupations, MacDonald settled down to writing for a living (a lifestyle that would have horrified his father). He worked very hard and was rewarded with a more than decent livelihood. But unlike Alger's heroes, MacDonald had a lot of fun doing it.
