Particularly in healthcare fields, there is growing movement away from traditional lecture style course towards active learning and team-based activities to improve learning and build higher level thinking through application of complex problems with a strong foundation of facts and data. Essential Pharmaceutics is suited to this modern teaching style, and is the first book of its kind to provide the resources and skills needed for successful implementation of an active learning pharmaceutics course. This text offers a format that is specifically suited for integration in an active learning, team-based classroom setting. It is ideal for self-learning for the beginning pharmaceutics student, based upon the extensive utilization of figures, tables, and its overview of essential topics in pharmaceutics. Also unique to this text is the integration of case studies based upon modern pharmaceutical products which are designed to reinforce importance pharmaceutical concepts and teach essential skills in literature review and patent searching. Case studies covering all topics covered in the text have been developed by the authors that allow application of the content in the flipped-classroom pharmaceutical course.
Non-linear phenomena pervade the pharmaceutical sciences. Understanding the interface between each of these phenomena and the way in which they contribute to overarching processes such as pharmaceutical product development may ultimately result in more efficient, less costly and rapid implementation. The benefit to Society is self-evident in that affordable treatments would be rapidly forthcoming. We have aggregated these phenomena into one topic “Pharmaco-complexity: Non-linear Phenomena and Drug Product Development”.
Pulmonary drug delivery has been a rapidly expanding field, moving from the traditional propellant based metered dose inhaler delivery of small asthma drugs, to a broader landscape of new devices and novel drugs for local and systemic delivery. The field has greatly expanded yet the tools for pulmonary drug delivery systems have not kept pace with the potential applications. One of the key developments has been the use of polymers to achieve better control of pulmonary drug delivery. This has the potential to expand the toolbox available for researchers in the field to deliver their new chemical entities successfully to the lung. This book reviews the use of polymers in pulmonary drug delivery, encompassing polymers from their use in devices and packaging, in addition to their use as excipients in formulations delivered to the airways. The book is arranged by application and extensively reviews the technical and patent literature. This is the first volume totally dedicated to polymers in pulmonary drug delivery and should be the resource of choice for those in the field, especially managers in the pharma/biotech industry. Naturally, the text will be of great interest to academics and graduate students. Finally, regulatory affiliated scientists will also find this resource invaluable.
The historical approach to the interpretation of physical, chemical and biological phenomena has been to consider relationships with causative factors that can be reduced to linearity allowing simple and direct interpretation. However, it is increasingly evident that there is often more information in the data than linear interpretations allow. The current capacity for computers to assist in identifying non-linear relationships allows greater interpretation of data which illuminates the phenomena allowing the information to be translated into knowledge that can be used wisely to promote various desirable pharmaceutical outcomes. This short volume is intended to stimulate the reader to contemplate research and development areas in which the data might be more accurately interpreted to allow greater understanding and ultimately control of the pharmaceutically complex phenomena.
