Here's a popular history of the Baby Boom Generation told through the vignettes, quotes, quips, sayings and slogans that characterized and shaped an era. A fascinating roller-coaster ride through the first four decades of the Baby Boom, Don't Trust Anyone Over Thirty paints an indelible portrait of those days. Historian Howard Smead brilliantly chronicles America's stormy generation and its stormy times with a refreshing approach that uses the expressions Boomers themselves loved and lived by. From Spock babies and the Golden 50s, through protest and change, Vietnam, Woodstock and the disco 70s, to the rise of the conservative right and the arrival of the Reagan Era, the glory days are all here. For Boomers and others interested in this effusive and influential generation, this signature work is a must.

The Regina Riot, which erupted in that city's Market Square on July 1, 1935, was the climax of a strike by relief camp workers which had begun in British Columbia on April 4. After lingering two months in Vancouver, the participants struck out east by freight train, on to Ottawa, where they intended to tell the Government of Canada that the situation of the unemployed had become intolerable. The origins of the Strike, the Trek, and the Riot -- the character of those events -- are what this book is all about. It is a narrative, composed from federal, provincial and municipal records, from news reports, from interviews with participants, from sworn testimony, from photographs, from maps, from sawn-off baseball bats. It is the story of an event which figured prominently, at the same instant, in the history of the Canadian worker, in the history of the Canadian radical, in the histories of two Canadian cities and in the history of R. B. Bennet's Depression years government." --
Arthur A. Carey’s autobiographical Memoirs of a Murder Man was first released in 1930, and focuses on the author’s detective work in homicide cases. The book includes chapters on such infamous cases as the 1920 slaying of Joseph Bowne Elswell, an American bridge player, tutor, and writer during the 1900s and 1910s, and the Barrel Murder in 1903, when New York police found the body of U.S. Secret Service agent Benedetto Madonia stuffed in a barrel, similar to the New Orleans “barrel murders” of the previous decade. A gripping book!

Grace Frick introduced English-language readers all over the world to the distinguished French author Marguerite Yourcenar with her award-winning translation of Yourcenar’s novel Memoirs of Hadrian in 1954. European biographies of Yourcenar have often disparaged Frick and her relationship with Yourcenar, however. This work shows Frick as a person of substance in her own right, and paints a portrait of both women that is at once intimate and scrupulously documented. It contains a great deal of new information that will disrupt long-held beliefs about Yourcenar and may even shock some of her scholars and fans.

Crime is not exactly a risky business for movie makers. In fact, this category has always been high on Hollywood's agenda, and there are very few crime films that have actually lost money. Crime and film noir make such a fascinating subject, that although the author set out to detail 150 of his favorite films, he has actually reviewed 185! 125 of these movies are also supplied with their exhaustive credit details, as well as copyright and other release information, plus a brief synopsis. Fortunately, many of these movies - both justly famous and even the unjustly neglected - are now available on DVD. Many are also frequently presented on pay TV.
Here in their own words are Frederick Douglass, George Jackson, Chief Joseph, Martin Luther King Jr., Plough Jogger, Sacco and Vanzetti, Patti Smith, Bruce Springsteen, Mark Twain, and Malcolm X, to name just a few of the hundreds of voices that appear in Voices of a People's History of the United States, edited by Howard Zinn and Anthony Arnove. Paralleling the twenty-four chapters of Zinn's A People's History of the United States, Voices of a People’s History is the long-awaited companion volume to the national bestseller. For Voices, Zinn and Arnove have selected testimonies to living history—speeches, letters, poems, songs—left by the people who make history happen but who usually are left out of history books—women, workers, nonwhites. Zinn has written short introductions to the texts, which range in length from letters or poems of less than a page to entire speeches and essays that run several pages. Voices of a People’s History is a symphony of our nation’s original voices, rich in ideas and actions, the embodiment of the power of civil disobedience and dissent wherein lies our nation’s true spirit of defiance and resilience.
Convicted sex offenders released from custody at the end of their criminal sentences pose a risk for re-offense. In many US states, Sexually Violent Predator (SVP) laws have been enacted that allow for the post-prison preventive detention of high risk sex offenders. SVP laws require the courts to make dispositions that protect the public from harm while at the same time respecting the civil rights of the offender. This book describes these SVP laws, their constitutionality, and aspects of their operation. Courts hear expert risk testimony based heavily on the results of actuarial risk assessment. Problems associated with this testimony include the lack of a theory of recidivism risk, bias due to human decision-making, and the insularity of scholarship and practice along developmental lines. The authors propose changes in legal standards, as well as a unified developmental model that treats sexual violence as an "evolving" condition, with roots traceable to childhood and paths that extend into adolescence and adulthood.
In Changing the Playbook, Howard P. Chudacoff delves into the background and what-ifs surrounding seven defining moments that redefined college sports. These changes involved fundamental issues--race and gender, profit and power--that reflected societal tensions and, in many cases, remain pertinent today: the failed 1950 effort to pass a Sanity Code regulating payments to football players; the thorny racial integration of university sports programs; the boom in television money; the 1984 Supreme Court decision that settled who could control skyrocketing media revenues; Title IX's transformation of women's athletics; the cheating, eligibility, and recruitment scandals that tarnished college sports in the 1980s and 1990s; the ongoing controversy over paying student athletes a share of the enormous moneys harvested by schools and athletic departments. A thought-provoking journey into the whos and whys of college sports history, Changing the Playbook reveals how the turning points of yesterday and today will impact tomorrow.

In a highly engaging style, Rheingold tells the story of what he calls the patriarchs, pioneers, and infonauts of the computer, focusing in particular on such pioneers as J. C. R. Licklider, Doug Engelbart, Bob Taylor, and Alan Kay. The digital revolution did not begin with the teenage millionaires of Silicon Valley, claims Howard Rheingold, but with such early intellectual giants as Charles Babbage, George Boole, and John von Neumann. In a highly engaging style, Rheingold tells the story of what he calls the patriarchs, pioneers, and infonauts of the computer, focusing in particular on such pioneers as J. C. R. Licklider, Doug Engelbart, Bob Taylor, and Alan Kay. Taking the reader step by step from nineteenth-century mathematics to contemporary computing, he introduces a fascinating collection of eccentrics, mavericks, geniuses, and visionaries. The book was originally published in 1985, and Rheingold's attempt to envision computing in the 1990s turns out to have been remarkably prescient. This edition contains an afterword, in which Rheingold interviews some of the pioneers discussed in the book. As an exercise in what he calls "retrospective futurism," Rheingold also looks back at how he looked forward.
